Image: 5 years on: Olympics 2012 where are they now. Part 3/4

By Gav Duthie: Part 3 focuses on Team America and the amateur scene in 2012. Boxing in the Olympics used to be a straight shoot between America and Cuba but those days are long gone. There have been no gold medals for the men since Andre Ward in 2004. In fact there have barely been any medals at all. The talent hasn’t dropped in the United States but the priorities have changed.

Purses: Wilder $900K, Washington $250K

Image: Purses: Wilder $900K, Washington $250K

By Jim Dower: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze” Bomber” Wilder (37-0, 36 KOs) will be getting a purse of $900,000 for his title defense tonight against Gerald Washington (18-0-1, 12 KOs) at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Washington will be getting a little less than Wilder with his purse being $250,000. That’s not bad money for a challenger with no big fight experience.

Wilder’s paydays should go up after the Washington fight. He could face Anthony Joshua next. Wilder I 31 now, and he needs to upgrade the level of his opposition for him to get the big money that we’re seeing from Joshua. The knock on Wilder is he’s been playing it safe in taking easy voluntary defenses of his World Boxing Council title since he captured the belt in January 2015.

By Scott Gilfoid: Former heavyweight title challenger Dominic Breazeale (17-1, 15 KOs) will be fighting Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round fight on the undercard of the heavyweight title clash between WBC champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder and Andrzej Wawrzyk on February 25 at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

#7 WBC Szpilka is coming off of a bad 9th round knockout loss to Wilder from last January at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Szpilka was knocked clean out by a right hand from Wilder in the 9th. It was a devastating knockout loss for the 27-year-old Szpilka.

Price wants Parker, Breazeale or Molina for Joshua card

Image: Price wants Parker, Breazeale or Molina for Joshua card

By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight David Price (20-3, 17 KOs) and his trainer Dave Coldwell are highly ambitious for the Anthony Joshua undercard on November 26 in wanting the likes of Joseph Parker, Dominic Breazeale (17-1, 15 KOs) or Eric Molina as an opponent.

Price, 33, is hoping that with a win over one of the above mentioned fighters, he’ll be able to get a title shot against Joshua. However, it might take a win over someone better than Breazeale or Molina for the 6’8” Price to get a shot against Joshua.

It’s not as if Breazeale and Molina have been getting great results with their careers lately. If Price could beat the young 24-year-old Joseph Parker on November 26, it would be a HUGE win for him, and obviously that would open the door for a title shot against Joshua.

Joshua is too robotic and predictable, says McGuigan

joshua72222

By Scott Gilfoid: Former world champion Barry McGuigan thinks IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (17-0, 17 KOs) needs to keep improving by facing better opposition than what he’s currently facing now. McGuigan thinks Joshua looked robotic and very predictable in his recent title defense against #13 IBF Dominic Breazeale (17-1, 15 KOs) last month.

Joshua won the fight by a 7th round knockout, but he seemed to be relying on throwing 1-2 combinations all night long, and didn’t show much in terms of variety when it came to his punch assortment. McGuigan doesn’t see #1 IBF Joseph Parker giving Joshua any problems when the two of them get around to facing each other in the near future.

Haye reacts to Joshua’s win over Breazeale

haye

By Scott Gilfoid: David Haye watched last Saturday’s fight between IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (17-1, 15 KOs) and challenger Dominic Breazeale while working as a commentator for Sky Sports, and he came away from the experience not impressed. Haye, 35, says he saw each and every punch from Joshua, and he could see them coming if he fought him.

Haye thinks he could get out of the way of the 6’6”, 243lb Joshua’s shots each time and limit greatly amount of punches he lands against him. Haye wants to fight Joshua as soon as the 26-year-old is ready to face him.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn doesn’t seem to be in nearly the same rush as Haye is to make the fight happen, as he wants to let the match marinate more before giving Joshua the green light. Thus far, Haye has fought twice in his comeback after being out of the ring for three and a half years with injuries and what not.
