Cotto-Mayorga: Look for Miguel to get ripped apart in this one

Image: Cotto-Mayorga: Look for Miguel to get ripped apart in this oneBy Dan Ambrose: When promoters plan out fights they sometimes overlook opponents due to their age. I believe this is the case for the March 12th fight between WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and 37-year-old Ricardo Mayorga. Bob Arum, Cotto’s promoter, obviously sees Mayorga’s age and believes that because he’s the older fighter that Cotto will naturally come out on top as the winner in this pay-per-view fight on 3/12 at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayorga’s offensive firepower will be a problem for Cotto

By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) probably has no business fighting in the junior middleweight division, because at only 5’7″, he’s little more than the typical height for lightweights. He’s been able to get by at welterweight because the division has been so weak in the past few years, and because he never fought certain guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Andre Berto and Mike Jones.

Cotto-Mayorga: Ricardo will prove that Miguel is a paper champion on 3/12

Image: Cotto-Mayorga: Ricardo will prove that Miguel is a paper champion on 3/12By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) has lost two out of his last five fights, and you can make a good argument that Cotto should have lost three out of his last fight bouts, because one of his victories was a questionable 12 round decision over Joshua Clottey in June 2009. I saw the fight, and like many boxing fans, I felt that Cotto lost that fight and looked like he was ready to quit when the going got tough. On March 12th, Cotto is taking on Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cotto-Mayorga: Miguel to try and box Ricardo on 3/12

Image: Cotto-Mayorga: Miguel to try and box Ricardo on 3/12By Dan Ambrose: Photo credit Chris Farina/Top Rank – WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) plans on trying to box 37-year-old challenger Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) on March 12th instead of going to war with him and risking suffering a cut or potentially a knockout loss when they go at it at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If Mayorga is in good shape, Cotto will lose this fight

Image: If Mayorga is in good shape, Cotto will lose this fightBy Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) has been through a lot of wars in the past four years, and he’s taken too much punishment for his own good. His promoter Bob Arum has been doing his best to keep Cotto winning, but it’s getting harder because he doesn’t seem to be the same fighter he once was in his prime. The beatings to Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao, plus the god awful punishment Cotto took in wins over Shane Mosley and Joshua Clottey has caused some deterioration in Cotto’s game.

Cotto-Mayorga: Ricardo’s knee won’t give out like Foreman’s. Miquel is in trouble

Image: Cotto-Mayorga: Ricardo's knee won't give out like Foreman's. Miquel is in troubleBy Dan Ambrose: It’s fair to say that Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) dodged a bullet in his last fight when WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman’s right knee gave out on him in the 7th round right when he was teeing off on Cotto and the fight was pretty much even. Had that injury not occurred, I think we would be talking about Foreman vs. Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) instead of Cotto.

Mayorga says he’s going to knock Cotto out in the 4th, then go after Pacquiao

By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) isn’t impressed in the least with his next opponent WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s), who Mayorga will be fighting on March 12th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 37-year-old Mayorga is seven years older than Cotto, but feels that his size, experience and power will be too much for the smaller 5’7″ Cotto.

If Cotto gets cut by Mayorga, he’ll lose – Prediction

By Dan Ambrose: I’m going to go out on the limb and make a prediction that WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will lose and lose badly to 37-year-old Ricardo Mayorga next month if Cotto gets cut at any point in the fight. It doesn’t matter how the cut occurs. Cotto will lose just the same, as long as the cut occurs above one of Cotto’s eyes. The reason I say this is because Cotto, unlike some fighters, tends to fall apart when he starts bleeding from cuts over his eyes.
