Mayorga says he’s going to knock Cotto out in the 4th, then go after Pacquiao

By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) isn’t impressed in the least with his next opponent WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s), who Mayorga will be fighting on March 12th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 37-year-old Mayorga is seven years older than Cotto, but feels that his size, experience and power will be too much for the smaller 5’7″ Cotto.

In an interview at eastsideboxing’s On the Ropes Boxing Radio program, Mayorga said “Miguel Cotto is a nobody…First of all, my experience. I hit harder than him. I’m bigger and stronger than him. I know how to think when I’m fighting in the ring. That is something he does not know how to do- Think while he’s fighting in the ring. Really, I’m going to show everyone. I’m going to knock him out in the 4th round.”

You really can’t count Mayorga out because he does seem to be a more intelligent fighter in the ring compared to Cotto. It seems like Cotto needs to follow instructions from his trainer Emanuel Steward to the letter. He does a good job when he’s following the instructions but when things change on the fly, Cotto seems lost during the heat of the action. Mayorga seems to think better on his feet and is more aggressive and the superior fighter offensively.

Mayorga plans on targeting Manny Pacquiao after beating Cotto, and feels that Pacquiao will give him the fight because of the popularity that Mayorga will get from beating Cotto. Mayorga also thinks that Shane Mosley will beat Pacquiao on May 7th. Mayorga says “Maybe Mosley could knock Pacquiao out. Mosley has strength. He hits hard and he moves quickly and he has a lot of experience.”
