Canelo’s making a big mistake in facing Lara

mayweather982828By Dan Ambrose: Boxing fans just finished seeing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) get clowned badly by Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September in a fight that was totally one-sided from start to finish. Now after taking an easy fight against Alfredo Angulo, which really wasn’t what you would call a real fight, Canelo is stepping it up against the Mayweather-esque WBA light middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What we’re basically talking about here is a second clowning for the red-haired Canelo. Unless Lara magically loses his talent, speed, defensive skills and power overnight the way that Angulo lost his power for his fight against Canelo, we’re probably looking at another loss for the 23-year-old Canelo. If nothing else, you’ve got to give Canelo credit for taking the fight, but it’s still probably a really stupid move for him to do this. We saw Canelo’s upper talent limit when he faced Austin Trout last year in April.

Canelo-Lara to fight to take place at 155lb

canelo677By Dan Ambrose: As I expected, the July 12th fight between WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez won’t have Lara’s WBA 154lb title on the line for the fight, because Canelo doesn’t want to fight for it. So instead of this being a junior middleweight fight, it’s going to take place in the middleweight division at 155lbs.

The middleweight division weight limit is from 155-160lbs. By having it beyond the 154lb limit, it’ll make it a little – but not a lot – easier for the red-headed Canelo to make weight for the fight. In his last fight against Alfredo Angulo last March, Canelo had the weight increased to 155 after he started having problems getting down to the 154lb limit. Canelo ended up rehydrating 20lbs to 175lbs after making weight.

Canelo vs. Lara = 50-50 fight, says Schaefer

canelo74By Dan Ambrose: Yesterday, WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) both revealed that they’ll be facing each other on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. They both want to give boxing fans the fight that they most want to see, and that’s why they’ve agreed to face each other in this pay-per-view fight on Showtime. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he sees this fight as a tossup fight, and he’s unable to pick the winner.

“It’s a 50-50 fight,” Schaefer said to RingTV. “The two best junior middleweights not named Mayweather, fighting each other.”

Canelo’s manager says Erislandy Lara a strong candidate for next fight

canelo74By Dan Ambrose: Eddy Reynoso, the trainer and manager for former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s), is saying that WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) is one of the leading candidates for the red-haired Canelo’s next fight in July. Carlos Molina and James Kirkland are also candidates, however.

“I can tell you that Lara is the most viable,” Reynoso said to ESPN Deportes. “He is the most feasible. I think it would be an interesting fight for all people. Carlos Molina is on the move, and the same with Kirkland. But Lara is the best, and is a clear advantage over the others.”

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara – What the future holds/Analysis

By D.A: Since my last article on Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley 2 received positive comments, I intend to do the same with my analysis of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara, which is a possibility for Canelo’s July 26th PPV bout. Earlier today I read an article on Canelo (43-1-1, 31 KOs) looking at Lara as a future opponent and Alvarez to be talking to his promoters at the Golden Boy headquarters in the coming weeks for his future opponent.
