De La Hoya: Boxing needs the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight

Image: De La Hoya: Boxing needs the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya believes that the sport of boxing needs the May 6 fight between Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 32 KOs) and former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs). The two of them are going to be fighting on HBO pay-per-view in either Las Vegas, Nevada or Texas.

For many Mexican boxing fans of the two fighters Canelo and Chavez Jr., it’s considered a big fight that will bring in a lot of money on PPV and at the gate. De Hoya feels that the fight will help the sport. He may be right about that, even though the fight is considered a non-competitive match on paper, and not the fight that the hardcore boxing fans want to see in the U.S.

Canelo vs. Chavez Jr = Big Cash grab?

Image: Canelo vs. Chavez Jr = Big Cash grab?

By Eric Baldwin: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) is largely seen by the boxing public as the sitting duck for Golden Boy Promotions’ top money maker Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) to destroy on HBO pay-per-view on May 6 at a yet to be determined site in the U.S. The price of the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight will likely be $65.99. That’s a lot of money for a fight that will probably be one-sided from start to finish. Chavez Jr. has problems making weight at super middleweight, and the 164 ½ pound catch-weight for this fight is going to be a real problem for him to make.

The $1 million per pound weight penalty that is in the contract for the fight is there to make sure that Chavez Jr. doesn’t come in over the weight limit. That’s too bad for Chavez Jr. because he’s going to need to boil down hard to make a weight that he hasn’t been at since 2012.

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya met with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones last Friday to discuss having the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. mega-fight on May 6 staged at his giant AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada is also a possibility for the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight. However, with the huge amount of seats available at AT&T Stadium, De La Hoya might be lured into moving the Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. fight to that location.

De La Hoya will make his decision about the site for the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight “within a next couple of weeks,” according to a source for the latimes.com. The T-Mobile will likely put in a large bid to get the Canelo fight at their venue.

De La Hoya says Canelo could fight Chavez Jr. three times

Image: De La Hoya says Canelo could fight Chavez Jr. three times

By Dan Ambrose: After talking for months about Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fighting middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in 2017, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is now saying that the fight might not happen this year, because there’s a possibility of a rematch between Canelo and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) taking place. In fact, De La Hoya says the Canelo and Chavez Jr. could fight a trilogy against each other.

In that case, Canelo would fight Chavez Jr. on May 6 on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo, then on the Mexican Independence Day holiday in September, and finally in December. However, De La Hoya might still put Canelo in with Miguel Cotto for December, and then match Canelo against Chavez Jr. in May of 2018 for the third fight between them.

Using Weight as a weapon, catch-weights, same day weigh-ins and Re-hydration

Image: Using Weight as a weapon, catch-weights, same day weigh-ins and Re-hydration

By Bradley D. Cision: In the last five or so years we have seen an alarming trend in boxing, and that is the catch-weight. Lately, several boxers have started using catch-weights as weapons, and this needs to be put to an end as quickly as possible.

The latest fight to have a catch-weight contract is the Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight on May 6. Historically, Chavez Jr. has had a good amount of difficulty making weight, and lately has been fighting at over 170 pounds. However, in his last fight against Dominik Britsch on December 10, he did come in lighter, but looked incredibly drawn and gaunt on the scales. The Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. fight has a catch-weight set at 164 1/2 pounds. Why the half pound? This seems ridiculous and pointless.

Canelo – Is Golden Boy stunting his career?

Image: Canelo – Is Golden Boy stunting his career?

By Jeff Aranow: Former two-division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6 is viewed by a lot of fans as sad mismatch on HBO PPV. It’s matches like this that lack the drama needed to take Canelo’s career to the next level.

Canelo v. Chavez Jr. isn’t seen a real fight in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans. It’s not even sporting, because of how bad Chavez Jr. has looked in his last six fights. Canelo is going to likely destroy the very close Chavez Jr. on May 6.

Canelo holds ALL the advantages for Chavez Jr. fight says Sanchez

Image: Canelo holds ALL the advantages for Chavez Jr. fight says Sanchez

By Dan Ambrose: Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez doesn’t like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s chances of beating Saul Canelo Alvarez in their fight on May 6. Sanchez sees Canelo as having all the advantages in the fight with it taking place at a catchweight of 164 ½ pounds. Sanchez sees the 26-year-old Canelo winning the fight by a 12 round decision. That’s surprising news, because a lot of the boxing fans are saying that Chavez Jr. has no chance, and will wind up getting knocked out at some point in the fight by Canelo.

It’s not good that Chavez Jr. quit on his stool just two years ago after the 9th round in his fight against Andrzej Fonfara in 2015. Fonfora knocked Chavez Jr. down in round 9 with a big head shot. In between rounds, Chavez Jr. pulled a no mas in choosing to quit on his stool rather than going out for round 10 and losing the fight possibly by a normal knockout.

Canelo explains why he was willing to go up in weight

Image: Canelo explains why he was willing to go up in weight

By Dan Ambrose: Saul Canelo Alvarez surprised boxing fans this past week when he decided to move up in weight 9 ½ pounds to take on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at a catchweight of 164 ½ pounds on May 6 in their big Mexican showdown HBO pay-per-view. Before agreeing to fight Chavez, 30, Canelo had been unwilling to move up to the full weight of 160lbs to fight middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin for his titles.

Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy maintained that he hadn’t grown into the middleweight class, and that he needed time to keep filling out, even though there were many rumors about Canelo (48-1-1, 34 KOs) rehydrating into the 180s for his fights. But with Canelo agreeing to go well beyond the 160lb division to fight Chavez Jr.(50-2-1, 32 KOs) at a catchweight of 164.5lbs, it looks strange to boxing fans how he had no problems with moving up in weight for this match-up.

Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. is a business fight says Malignaggi

Image: Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. is a business fight says Malignaggi

By Allan Fox: Commentator and former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi says he doesn’t like the Saul “Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs), which is scheduled for HBO pay-per-view on May 6. Malignggi sees the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight as more of a business related match-up, which is a self-serving one that will help everyone involved in the fight.

It will help enrich Canelo, his promoters at Golden Boy, Chavez Jr., and his management team. But as far as giving the boxing public a good product in terms of a competitive match-up, Malignaggi sees the fight coming up short in that department.
