Burns-Vazquez: Ricky will struggle with Miguel’s style

burns3By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) already suspects he’s going to be really in for it against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) next month on March 16th in their fight in the UK in London.

Vazquez is so much different and so much better than the guys that Burns has been fighting his entire 12-year pro career. Up until now, Burns has been fighting against the typical slugger/boxer type in the UK, and his experience against world class opposition has been rather limited to just a couple of fighters that are decent but not great.

Ricky Burns sparring with taller fighters to get ready for Vazquez

burns10By Scott Gilfoid: To get him ready for what he’s going to be facing on March 16th, WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) against the tall 5’10” IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s), Burns is sparring with really tall fighters hoping that they can somehow get him prepared for what he’ll face in the ring at the Wembley Arena in London, England.

This obviously won’t help Burns because there isn’t anyone in the UK with the same kind of hard to hit defensive style that the 26-year-old Vazquez has.

Burns said to BoxNation “He’s [Vazquez] a very good technical puncher, very fast. When you fight, it’s quite the same as myself. It’s going to be a very tough fight. I’m bringing in tall sparring partners to prepare.”

Burns vs. Vazquez: Miguel is going to make it difficult for Ricky to brawl

vazquez435By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) prefers to brawl with his opponents much in the fighting style as WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero in that Burns take the fight to his opponents, and then gets physical with them once he gets in close.

That’s what makes Burns so good is that he roughs up his opponents in close with a variety of tactics, some of which aren’t within the boxing rules. Burns has been blessed thus far during his career with most of his opponents being stationary fighters that allow him to slug and rough them up at close quarters.

However, on May 16th, Burns will be fighting IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) at the Wembley Arena in London, England. Fighting the elusive Vazquez is like trying to punch water.

Burns vs. Vazquez: Ricky is going to look bad in this fight

burns3By Scott Gilfoid: I really hope the judges get the decision right for the March 16th fight between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) and IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) because they won’t be doing anyone any favors if they mess up the scoring and give the loser the victory.

The fight will be taking place at the Wembley Arena in London, England, and that means the 29-year-old Burns will have the hometown advantage. Yes, I know he’s from Scotland, but that’s the UK, and Scotland is just a stone’s throw away from London, so you can pretty much call Burns the hometown fighter.

Ricky Burns has no advantages against Miguel Vazquez

vazquez43By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) won’t have his customary height and reach advantage when he faces the 5’10” IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) on March 16th at the Wembley Arena in London, UK. Burns, 5’10”, is accustomed to having between a 2” to 5” inch height and a 3” to 6” reach advantage over his mostly smaller opponents.

The only fight where Burns fought someone who was taller than him was his bout against a badly over-matched Joseph Laryea in March 2011. Well, Burns isn’t going to have a height advantage on March 16th against Vazquez, and in fact, Burns will be giving away two inches in reach to the long-armed Vazquez in this fight.

Burns vs. Vazquez: Ricky made a mistake by agreeing to this fight

burns34343By Scott Gilfoid: I think WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns 35-2, 10 KO’s) doesn’t realize what a huge mistake he made in agreeing to fight IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) on March 16th at the Wembley Arena.

This is one of those colossal blunders that just make you want to laugh because of stupid it is. Burns has probably never seen Vazquez fight, so you can maybe give Burns a slight break for that reason for this disastrous choice. The fact of the matter is Burns doesn’t have a chance in this fight.

Burns: I may fight Broner in June

burns334By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) is hoping to get a unification bout against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in June of this year, if Burns can get past his March 16th unification bout against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) first.

That’s a big ‘if’ because Vazquez is SO much better than the guys that Burns has been fighting it’s not even funny. Burns says he thinks he can win but it’s going to be tough because his style is build more for guys that stand in front of him for 12 rounds looking to slug, and I’m not talking about talents like Adrien Broner. Burns isn’t built for that. He’s built for guys like Kevin Mitchell, Nicky Cook and Andreas Evensen.

Vazquez targeting Broner after he beats Burns

vazquez435By Scott Gilfoid Sean Gibbons, of Zanfer Promotions, wants his fighter IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) wants to take on the best fighter in the lightweight division in WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) after Vazquez deals with WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) in their fight on March 16th at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, in London, United Kingdom.

Gibbons said to RingTV “This is going to be a beat down, and we’ll put the same on Ricky Burns…After we’re done with Ricky Burns in London, we’ve got no problem coming to Cincinnati to spank Broner in front of his fans and his family.”

Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez in unification bout on March 16th in London

vazquez4By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will finally be getting back in the ring after many months out of action, but instead of accepting the challenge to fight the best guy in the 135 lb. division, Burns will be taking on IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 Ko’s) in a unification bout on March 16th at the Wembley Arena in London, England.

My thoughts on this fight is that it seems to be a move in order to get Burns another title so he’ll be in a better bargaining position in negotiations for a fight against Broner later on this year.
