Burns: I may fight Broner in June

burns334By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) is hoping to get a unification bout against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in June of this year, if Burns can get past his March 16th unification bout against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) first.

That’s a big ‘if’ because Vazquez is SO much better than the guys that Burns has been fighting it’s not even funny. Burns says he thinks he can win but it’s going to be tough because his style is build more for guys that stand in front of him for 12 rounds looking to slug, and I’m not talking about talents like Adrien Broner. Burns isn’t built for that. He’s built for guys like Kevin Mitchell, Nicky Cook and Andreas Evensen.

Burns said to RingTV “We are looking at maybe June for that [Broner]…I’ve seen a couple of his [Vazquez] fights and he’s a very technical boxer, very evasive…I think I can win.”

So, Burns is already looking past Vazquez, eh? That’s disappointing to me because this is the last guy that Burns should be looking past. I mean, I know Burns is fighting in the UK and all, but gosh, Man, that’s not going to help you against Vazquez. This man has talent and if the judges give you a decision that boxing fans feel that you don’t deserve then you can probably forget all about fighting Broner because he likely won’t want to fight a guy that is coming off of a controversial decision. Broner likely won’t want that taint to rub off on him. He’s trying to become a superstar and he needs to be fighting the guys that are looking good and winning in style, not the guys that are getting controversial wins.

Burns needs to be thinking entirely on the Vazquez fight because Vazquez is arguably a lot better than him and, of course, every fighter he’s ever faced before during his career.

The Burns-Vazquez fight will be taking place at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, London, United Kingdom. In other words, it’s a hometown advantage for Burns in this fight, and I hope we don’t see a hometown decision to go along with it.

Okay, so for the sake of argument, let’s say Burns does beat Vazquez on March 16th. Do you honestly think Burns fight will Broner in June like he says he will? I don’t know. Burns has had chances in the past two fight Broner, two chances, and on both occasions he chose not to. Coming events cast their shadows before and I think Burns will do what he’s done in the past by finding a reason not to take the fight.
