Burns stops Gonzalez on lucky break

burns43333By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2, 11 KO’s) got a really lucky break tonight when his opponent Jose Gonzalez (22-1, 17 KO’s) suffered a wrist injury and was unable to come out for the 10th round on Saturday night at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. >

Burns was trailing 7 rounds to 2 on my scorecard and the only round you can arguably give him was the 8th and 9th after Gonzalez injured his wrist in the 7th round after totally dominating Burns in the 7th.

Gonzalez: I’ve got to KO Ricky Burns to win

gonzalez33(Photos courtesy PR Best Boxing Promotions/Joel Colon) By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO challenger Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) realizes what he’s up against tonight in venturing into Glasgow, Scotland to face WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) at the Emeritates Arena.

Gonzalez realizes that he’s probably going to need to knockout Burns to make sure that he walks out of the ring with the WBO strap around his waist.

This is Burns’ home turf him being from Scotland, and it might take a thudding knockout to make sure that he doesn’t find himself on the receiving end of a questionable decision.

If Burns beats Gonzalez, he’ll face Miguel Vazquez next

burns42(Photos courtesy PR Best Boxing Promotions/Joel Colon) By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn wants to match his fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) in a unification bout next if Burns gets past his #1 challenger Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Emirates Arena, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

That’s a big if because Gonzalez is a huge, huge puncher of the first order and Burns is there to be hit all night long. Burns seems to see himself as a puncher lately and I’m wondering if his 4th round knockout win over Kevin Mitchell last September may have planted some ideas in his head about his power.

Jose Chelo Gonzalez and Ricky Burns both weigh 134.5 pounds

burns#12(Photos courtesy PR Best Boxing Promotions/Joel Colon) By Scott Gilfoid: #1 World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight ranked Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez and the WBO champion Ricky Burns weighed 134.5 pounds today during the official weigh in held at the St Echno Centre in Glasgow, for their clash of tomorrow at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland.

Burns is going to be in for a world of hurt in this fight because Gonzalez is a huge puncher and Burns doesn’t have the power to stand and trade with this guy. The best that Burns can do is trying and spoil by running, holding and fighting a purely defensive battle.

A Look Forward to This Weeks Boxing – 11th May 2013

burns#11(Photos courtesy PR Best Boxing Promotions/Joel Colon) By Shane Newsome: Yet another return to my weekly column which means only one thing yet more exciting boxing in our packed schedule and yet another three world championship belts on the line over the weekend and all have a true chance of changing hands.

We start the action at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, Scotland, UK and straight into our first Championship fight of the weekend between Scotland’s own WBO Lightweight Champion Ricky Burns (35-2) and Jose A Gonzalez (22-0) this is a mandatory defense for Burns but far from an easy one the 29 year-old Puerto Rican Gonzalez is a hungry undefeated fighter who has truly deserved his shot at the title and with his power (17 ko’s in 22 wins) and he wont make this a simple night for the home fighter Burns who is rarely in an easy fight, saying that I do see Burns scraping through this test with a close decision though he may have his chin tested in the process, if Burns does pick up the win here I’d like to see the fight between him and Miguel Vazquez which was called off last year be remade as it will be a great fight.

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO contender Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) has already mapped out how he’s going to beat WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) and take his World Boxing Organization 135 lb. strap this Saturday night at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, and that’s by putting the Scottish Burns under heavy pressure all night long and hitting him as hard as he can when he’s able to catch up to him.

Ricky Burns v Jose Gonzalez press conference

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) and his unbeaten challenger Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) had their final press conference to market their fight for this Saturday night at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, in Scotland, United Kingdom.

Neither guy much to say and Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn from Matchroom Sport did most of the talking in his usual long-winded way. The press conference consisted pretty much of Hearn talking 80% of the time with only a few token words mixed in from the Burns and Gonzalez.

Ricky Burns vs. Jose Gonzalez this Saturday, May 11th in Glasgow, Scotland

5 may 2013 LLEGA CHELO GONZALEZ A ESCOCIA 06(Photo credit: PR Best Boxing Promotions/Joel Colon) By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will be making his third defense of his World Boxing Organization 135 pound title this Saturday night against the big punching Jose A Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) at the Emirates Arena, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

The 30-year-old Burns will be getting his first taste of power since his clinch-filled 12 round decision over Michael Katsidis two years ago in London.

Since then, Burns has had two easy fights against light hitters Kevin Mitchell and Paulus Moses. Gonzalez, 29, is a much bigger puncher than Katsidis or Burns’ biggest hitting opponent to date Roman Martinez, and he’s got huge, huge power in either hand.

Burns not worried about Jose Gonzalez’s power

burns4534By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) is flying blind going into his title defense this month against unbeaten #1 WBO Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) on May 11th at the Emirates Arena, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Burns, 30, has seen very little of Gonzalez’s fights because there’s so little footage out there for him.

This means that Burns is stepping into the unknown against the hard hitting Puerto Rican Gonzalez, and that’s not what you want when you’re a light puncher like Burns because Gonzalez has the kind of power where he can take the judges out of the picture by knocking Burns out and rendering Burns’ hometown advantage meaningless.

Burns-Gonzalez: Ricky in dangerous fight on May 11th at the Emirates Arena

burns2By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) and his promoter Eddie Hearn had no other choice but to agree to face #1 WBO Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) on May 11th at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, in Scotland, United Kingdom.

It was either face the hard hitting Gonzalez or give up the WBO title because the World Boxing Organization ordered Burns to take this fight, and he had no other choice unless he was up for vacating.
