Kell Brook vs. Shawn Porter analysis

Shawn Porter and Kell Brook(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By G. Cooper: (If you like my opinions so much you can’t wait for my next long-winded rant, you can catch my 140 character verbal jabs @Fight_Whisperer on twitter.)

Here is my breakdown of the Shawn Porter-Kell Brook fight. The analysis below mixes those sources with buzz and opinions I expect boxingnews24 readers will be familiar with.

Reach: Did you know Shawn Porter has a longer reach than Kell Brook? According to The Bleacher Report, Porter’s reach is actually 1/2 inch longer than Brook’s, despite his listed height being two inches shorter, and his actual height being 3 1/2 inches shorter. A half inch is basically a wash, but I bring it up because I think most fans assume Porter is at a reach disadvantage.

Hearn: It’s time for Kell Brook to establish himself as the next big star at 147

Shawn Porter and Kell Brook(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says that #1 IBF Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) is ready to unveil himself as the next star in the 147 pound division by beating IIBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) this Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Hearn is hoping that Brook will capture the IBF title and strike gold for him so that he can match him against Amir Khan and some of the other fighters in the 147 pound division. Brook his eyes on fighting Khan, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao. He believes those fights are possible for him if he gets past Porter.

“It’s time for Kell Brook to establish himself as the next big star in the welterweight division,” Hearn said at the final press conference earlier today.

Brook: I’m not afraid to make it a dogfight against Porter

PorterBrookWorkout_Hoganphotos3(Photo credit: Hogan Photos) By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) says his foremost plan for Saturday night is to try and box IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) in an effort to take his title by that method.

If that fails to work, then Brooks says he’s going to get in the trenches and slug it out with him to see if he can beat him at his own game at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

“I’m more of a boxer, and that’s how I want it to say,” Brook said via Skysports.com. “But I’m not afraid to make it a dogfight.”

Ingle: In England, Brook would win 100% over Porter

porterBy Scott Gilfoid: Dominic Ingle, the trainer for Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs), sees his match on Saturday against IBF 147 pound champ Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs), as a toss-up bout. He says that Porter has never fought anyone good, and that Brook has been working out for 16 weeks to get ready for this fight.

Ingle thinks he’s got the goods to take it. Ingle doesn’t rate Porter as being in the same league as Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr, and he feels he’s ready to be beaten on Saturday.

Ingle made a remark that seemed a little odd when he said if the fight were to be staged in the UK, Kell would win. It shouldn’t make any difference where the fight is staged. I don’t understand how it would be any different in the UK. If Porter is the better fighter, it shouldn’t be any different no matter where the fight takes place.

If Ingle is talking about Brook getting the benefit of the doubt if the fight went to the card just because he’s fighting at home in the UK, then that’s pretty sad. Of course, I’m sure if Porter had agreed to fight Kell in the UK, he’d have taken his own judges with him in the form of his fists in order to make sure the judges played no part in the outcome of the fight.

Porter v Brook preview

porter03By Gav Duthie: This Saturday hosts one of the most intriguing fights of the year as Kell Brook looks to finally prove he is “The Special One” against Shawn “Showtime” Porter. Porter is a massive 2/5 favorite with the bookies with Brook the 2/1 outsider.

I feel that the fight is a much closer contest than that so decided to have an in-depth look at the fighters attributes to compare and contrast. The winner can look forward to huge fights against the likes of Keith Thurman, Amir Khan and even Floyd Mayweather Jr next year.

Matthew Hatton thinks Kell Brook will beat Porter

brook45453By Scott Gilfoid: Former Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) victim Matthew Hatton is picking Brook to beat IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) this Saturday night in their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Hatton likes Kell’s talent, and he sees him as being fully ready to beat Porter in front of his own fans in Carson. Brook will be a long way from the UK on Saturday night, and there’s likely going to be few cheers for him in this fight. Brook is used to his fans adoring him and screaming like mad each time he throws a shot.

Porter: Brook can’t fight well on the inside

Shawn Porter(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) isn’t impressed with the inside fighting skills of #1 IBF Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs), and he believes that’s an area that he can take advantage of this Saturday night when he faces him at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Brook tends to stay on the outside most of the time, and when he’s in close he’s not doing much other than holding or wrestling.

Porter also plans on taking Brook deep into the fight to test his stamina, because he notes that he’s not had too many fights go the full distance during his career. This is something that Porter really can’t plan on though, because Brook could fall apart in the early rounds in the same way that Paulie Malignaggi did in getting beaten to a pulp on the inside last April from Porter’s huge shots.

So lets get down to it, there are a number of upcoming fights that are intriguing im going to pick 5 and make this into a series of articles so I can fully explore each fight and the options it opens up.

Kell Brook v Shawn Porter

This is a much tighter match-up than most boxing fans realize, while it Is true Brook has fought his fair share of lets say 2nd and 3rd tier fighters however he has faced Carson Jones and Viacheslav Sencenko who are decent fighters who were hovering around world level.

Kell Brook thinks he’ll KO Porter in 1st round on Saturday

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: It’s been 10 years since #1 IBF Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) turned pro and now after all that time he’ll be finally fighting for a world title for the first time in his career against IBF 147 pound champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

It’s a reasonable statement to stay that Brook has fought his share of fodder opposition while building up his impressive looking 32-0 record. But it seems that the wins over easy 2nd and 3rd tier opposition have Brook believing him capable of scoring an easy knockout on Saturday against Porter. In fact, Brook thinks he’ll KO Porter in the 1st round.

Kell Brook should fight Bundu if he loses to Porter

Kell Brook(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Matthias Predonzan: IBF welterweight title-fight between the champion Shawn Porter and the contender Kell Brook will be stylistically an interesting fight even if, in my opinion, the outcome is quite certain on August 16th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Porter is a much stronger opponent for Brook and I believe the fight will be end inside the distance by referee stoppage.

I was really impressed by Porter when he fought Devon Alexander: he out-boxed him and punished him relentlessly for the whole fight. This was surprising to me because Alexander is himself one very good fighter, but he never found the way to solve the problem of Porter’s speed and timing.
