Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Tim Bradley on September 14th at the Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, Nevada

marquez456By Chris Williams: The proposed fight between WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez has been confirmed by their promoter Bob Arum, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. The fight will take place on September 14th at the Thomas & Mack Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The date could change depending on whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be fighting on September 14th or not. Arum seems to think Mayweather won’t be, but if he does then Arum will move the Bradley-Marquez fight to October.

Golden Boy and Top Rank to have competing shows on September 14th

bradley20By Eric Thomas: Golden Boy Promotions have requested September 14th with the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a pay per view show in Las Vegas, Nevada in a fight that will be headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. a still to be determined opponent. At the same time, Top Rank will possibly have WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley defending his title against Juan Manuel Marquez in a PPV bout as well.

What this means for boxing fans is that they will have to decide on which PPV broadcast they want to purchase on that fight unless they want to purchase both of them and flip channels or Tivo them. Unless there’s an injury of some sorts that will knock one of these two fights from that date, we could see the numbers for either fight less than what they could have been if they didn’t have tough competition.

Bradley-Marquez is a tough sell on PPV, says Rafael

marquez45By Chris Williams: If the Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s) vs. WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (30-0, 12 KO’s) fight does get made for September 14th, it’s going to be awfully tough sell for Bob Arum to make this fight a pay-per-view bout.

Dan Rafael of ESPN sees it as a fight that at best would generate possibly 250,000 to 300,000 PPV buys.

Would that be enough to make the fight worthwhile? I kind of doubt the fight would generate even that many buys because if Arum is really intent on putting it on that date he’s going to find himself competing with Floyd Mayweather Jr. because he plans on fighting on that date as well.
