Parker’s promoter sees Haye as easier opponent than Ruiz

By Scott Gilfoid: Dean Lonergan, the promoter for unbeaten #1 WBO heavyweight contender Joseph Parker (21-0, 18 KOs), sees David Haye (28-2, 26 KOs) as an easier opponent than #3 WBO Andy Ruiz Jr. (29-0, 19 KOs), who the 24-year-old Parker will be facing next month on December 10 in a fight for the vacant World Boxing Organization heavyweight title at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.

The WBO made #5 WBO Haye the mandatory for the winner of the Parker-Ruiz fight. Whether the 36-year-old Haye will take that fight is the big question. Haye might choose to wait on a big money fight against IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua instead of risking his hide facing the winner of the Parker vs. Ruiz Jr. fight, even though it would be in Haye’s best interest to win the WBO title before he faces Joshua. It would be surprising news if Haye agreed to fight Parker or Ruiz, because those guys have heavy hands. They hit too hard, and they would likely be able to take Haye’s power shots long enough to get to his chin and expose him as not being a true heavyweight.

Parker vs. Ruiz Jr = Andy will have it tough on December 10

ruiz

By Eric Baldwin: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum believes in his fighter Andy Ruiz Jr’s chances against unbeaten Joseph Parker (21-0, 18 KOs) in their fight on December 10 for the vacant WBO heavyweight champion. Arum thinks that Ruiz Jr. will beat the 24-year-old Parker to become the first Mexican to win a heavyweight world title.

For Ruiz Jr. (29-0, 19 KOs) to accomplish that goal, he’ll need to improve over the efforts that he’s shown in his fights against Franklin Lawrence, Raphael Zumbano Love and Siarhei Liakhovich.

It would be big deal for Arum if Ruiz Jr. could win the WBO heavyweight title. Arum obviously wouldn’t care that Ruiz Jr. would be merely one of four heavyweight champions, and not the No.1 champion in the division.

Arum wants Parker vs. Ruiz in January

parker1

By Scott Gilfoid: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum expects his fighter Andy Ruiz Jr. (29-0, 19 KOs) to be facing unbeaten Joseph Parker (21-0, 18 KOs) in January rather than December for the vacant World Boxing Organization heavyweight title. The WBO will need to strip current champion Tyson Fury of his title first, but this could be a mere formality at this point.

Arum is in negotiations with Parker’s promoter Dean Lonergan, and says they still have a distance to go in the money for the fight. However, Arum is confident the fight is going to take place. He wants it to take place in January rather than December, because Ruiz Jr. is trained by Abel Sanchez, the same trainer for unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Joseph Parker vs. Andy Ruiz Jr. possible for December 10

parker1

By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like unbeaten heavyweight contender Joseph Parker may not need to bother waiting around for a title shot against IBF champion Anthony Joshua, because he could wind up fighting for a title on December 10 against unbeaten Andy Ruiz Jr. Parker destroyed Alexander Dimitrenko in three rounds last Saturday night in New Zealand in a stay busy fight.

The 24-year-old Parker could be about to fight Ruiz Jr. for a career high payday for one of the two heavyweight titles that champion Tyson Fury still has in his possession. Fury may be soon stripped of his WBA and WBO titles for him allegedly testing positive for cocaine. If that happens, then one of those titles could be available for Parker and the Top Rank promoted Ruiz to fight over.

Ruiz vs. Gromley this Saturday

Having already experienced being a world-rated TV-level fighter under tremendous pressure to win every fight impressively, Miami-based slugger Josh “Dempsey” Gormley says he much prefers the lowered expectations of being considered the “opponent” since coming back to boxing.

“There’s a lot of pressure on you as the A-side guy,” explained Gormley. “As an opponent, I’m supposed to lose, so when I win it’ll be that much more dramatic.”

Andy Ruiz Jr defeats Liakhovich, looks poor

ruizBy Dan Ambrose: #3 WBO, #8 WBC, #13 IBF heavyweight contender Andy Ruiz Jr (23-0, 17 KOs) put in a workmanlike performance last Saturday night in defeating former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich (26-6, 16 KOs) in beating him by a 10 round unanimous decision at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona.
