Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero both game to prove who’s “Cali’s best”

ortiz34By Dallas Orysiuk It has been nearly a year since “Vicious” Victor Ortiz has been in the ring. In his last outing, in an exciting fight, Ortiz squared off with the heavy underdog Josesito Lopez who was supposed to be an easy walk through for Ortiz.

We all know how that turned out…. slightly up on the judges score cards, Ortiz was forced to quit when he could no longer continue due to a broken jaw that he sustained early on in the fight. Ortiz lost by a 9th round RTD.

Victor Ortiz: If Mayweather won’t fight me again then I want Tim Bradley

ortiz5By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) was hoping that WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. would look his way to give him a rematch after Ortiz was stopped in the 4th round by him two years ago in September 2011.

Thus far, Mayweather hasn’t been eager to get Ortiz back in the ring to give him a rematch, but Ortiz still remains hopeful that he’ll look his way in the near future now that Mayweather has signed a 6-fight deal with Showtime/CBS.

Victor Ortiz to perform on Dancing with the Stars on March 18th

ortiz1By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) will competing outside of the boxing ring on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars on March 18th. Ortiz, 26, will be matched with Lindsay Arnold for the dance competition. Ortiz says he’s still letting his broken jaw heal.

Ortiz suffered a broken jaw last June in his loss to Josesito Lopez, and Ortiz is really taking his time getting back in the ring. At this point it looks like he’s going to use up a year of his career letting his jaw heal, and he might regret it later missing all that time.

Victor Ortiz: I want to clean up the 147 lb. division

ortiz34By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) says he’s going to stick it out at welterweight rather than moving up to junior middleweight because he says he wants to beat all the top guys at 147 first before he moves up to 154 to face WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Ortiz, 26, hasn’t fought since he was stopped by Josesito Lopez last June in the 9th round after suffering a broken jaw in two places.

Ortiz said to RingTV “I am gonna stay at 147 pounds for a little bit longer I’m sure, just because I wanna clean the division…I wanna show that I am that pound-for-pound 147. Once I’m done there, definitely 154, that’s next.”

Victor Ortiz: I’ll KO Amir Khan when he gives me a shot

ortiz4By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) believes he’ll KO former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan when he eventually moves up in weight to the welterweight division in the future. Khan is already ranked #2 by the WBC at 147, so he’s already been given a welcome mat for him to move up to 147.

Ortiz said on his twitter in response to being asked ‘when is he going to KO Khan,’ “When he gives me a shot.”

A Khan vs. Ortiz fight will likely be one of the first fights that Golden Boy Promotions sets Khan up with when he moves up to 147. If Khan can’t pass test against the 26-year-old Ortiz, which I don’t think he can, he’ll have little choice but to move back down to 140 to continue as a light welterweight.

Khan looking at Senchenko, Ortiz and Lopez for April fight

khan45By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) is expected to announce his April opponent this week, and he’s talking about picking from one of three fighters: Josesito Lopez, Victor Ortiz and Vyacheslav Senchenko. The good news is those guys are not lightweights like Khan’s last opponent Carlos Molina. The bad news is two of those fighters are coming off of losses in which they didn’t perform well.

Khan said to Sky Sports “Josesito Lopez, Victor Ortiz, Senchenko, the guy that beat Ricky Hatton. There are few names that we have been put there…Whoever they find for me, we’ll find out in the next couple of days.”

Khan: Victor Ortiz, Josesito Lopez and Matthysse are potential opponents for me in April

matthysse3123By Scott Gilfoid: You can add WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse and former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz to the list of fighters that former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan may end up fighting in April, 2013. Josesito Lopez is already on the list, but his status is unclear because Khan hasn’t seemed really enthused when mentioning his name.

Khan said on Sky Ringside “There are a few names – Josesito Lopez, Victor Ortiz, there’s Lucas Matthysse, whoever. I fight whoever they [Golden Boy Promotions] puts in front of me.”

Victor Ortiz to fight in April or May

ortiz34By Allan Fox: The struggling former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) will be back inside the ring in April or May of next year, according to RingTV. There isn’t an opponent selected for his ring return, but it’s likely not going to be anyone that you would consider dangerous. Golden Boy has to take it easy with Ortiz, because he’s lost his last two fights and looked poor in both of them.

Ortiz’s broken jaw is reportedly healing nicely and he should be ready to go in April with a danger of him re-breaking it. In his next fight, Ortiz will be fighting at welterweight, and he’s going to really need to be careful if he doesn’t want to keep losing. Despite having lost his last two fights, Ortiz has a lot going for him still.

The Mayweather Effect

Image: The Mayweather EffectBy Paul Walsh: I remember watching an interview with Floyd Mayweather some time ago and he said something which has stuck with me ever since, “Once I beat a fighter they are never the same, mentally and physically”.  At the time I didn’t know what but after watching Cotto and Hatton fights recently it suddenly reemerged to the surface.

Let’s look at the facts and check the current status of Mayweather’s last 6 opponents;

Josesito Lopez talks about fights with Victor Ortiz and Saul Alvarez

Image: Josesito Lopez talks about fights with Victor Ortiz and Saul AlvarezBy Ian Aldous: After seeing his career explode into the mainstream this year, Josesito Lopez (30-5) hopes to see more big fights coming his way in 2013. A career-defining win was shortly followed by a devastating stoppage loss, albeit in a weight division he probably isn’t built for. This week Josesito Lopez took some time to talk with me about his breakout year in boxing.

Having beaten the then unbeaten, Mike Dallas Jr. via seventh round stoppage, Josesito Lopez hoped to cap off 2011 with another win over an unbeaten fighter. Unfortunately a split-decision defeat against Jessie Vargas may have harmed his chances of securing a title fight. Little did he know what 2012 had in store for him. “After that tough split-decision loss, I just wanted to get back in there and get a ‘W’ no matter what. I was preparing for a fight;
