Arum wants Lomachenko and Nicholas Walters to fight in 2015

waltersBy Allan Fox: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says that he’d like to setup a fight between WBA Super World featherweight champion Nicholas Walters (25-0, 21 KOs) and WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KOs) in 2015.

Walters recently obliterated one of Arum’s most popular fighters in Nonito Donaire in stopping him in the 6th round last October in a pretty much one-sided fight. Now that Donaire is out of the unofficial featherweight tournament that Arum has going, it’s now Lomachenko and Walters that need to face each other.

Arum wants Donaire-Walters winner to face Lomachenko

lomachenko99By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is interested in matching the winner of this Saturday’s fight between WBA Super World featherweight champion Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KOs) and Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20 KOs) against WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KOs).

This would be an excellent fight, but it would be awfully tough on Walters and Donaire, because neither of those guys are in the same league as Lomachenko in my view.

“Arum told me today he’d like to match Saturday’s Donaire-Walters winner with Lomachenko if V-Lom wins 11/22. LOVE IT! #boxing,” said Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo added to Pacquiao-Algieri card on November 22nd

lomachenko3By Chris Williams: WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KOs) will be making his first defense of his WBO 126 pound title against Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (52-1, 33 KOs) on the undercard of the HBO televised pay-per-view card headlined by Manny Pacquiao vs. Chris Algieri on November 22nd at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

Top Rank promoter built up the Lomachenko vs. Piriyapinyo as an exciting fight that he feels will be competitive. Unfortunately, that’s probably not going to be the case. Piriyapinyo, 29, has one of the most padded records I’ve ever seen from a fighter. He’s got 52 wins, but all the victories came against very weak opposition.

Are the judges really to blame in a year of hard fights?

floyd8888By Ramon Matthews Jr: Judging has certainly become one boxing’s weak points over the recent years. Boxing has actually become harder to score due to the style match-ups, particularly this year. In a year that has actually been a great year for boxing so far, we will take a look at the 5 most controversial decisions of the year (in no particular order).

5. Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Marcos Maidana: In a good action fight, something rarely seen from boxing’s current best fighter on Earth Floyd Mayweather, he was outworked in the first four rounds. From that point on depending on who you talk to, Mayweather took control of the rest of the fight.

Lomachenko should take a step back from world level

lomachenko44444By Gav Duthie: I apologize in advance for being the voice of boredom but I think Vasyl Lomachenko 2-1 (1) should relinquish his recently acquired WBO Featherweight title and take a short break from fighting at the top level. There is no doubt Saturday night was an amazing achievement from the Ukranian amateur sensation who equaled Thai boxer Saensak Muangsurin’s record of winning a world title after only 3 fights. However, after doing a bit of research into Muangsurin and some of the other early achievers very few of them go on to have really successful careers.

That combined with the fact that Loma’s last two fight have went to a split decision I fear that Lomachenko’s career could be over before it begins. Even though his win was well deserved I felt there were a lot of weaknesses in his game that could be rectified with some more professional experience. He seems to struggle on the back foot when under pressure, he can be countered quite easily, his arms are often low without the speed to justify this.

What is next for Lomachenko and Gary Russell jr?

russell333By Paul Richardson: As predicted two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1KO) dominated heavily hyped American Gary Russell jr. (24-1, 14KO’s) at the stub-hub centre in Carson, California last Saturday night. Lomachenko becomes only the second fighter in history to win a world title in his third pro fighter after Thailand’s Saensak Muangsurin in 1975.

The official scorecards of 114-114, 116-112, and 116-112 were puzzling to say the least as the skilled amateur veteran outclassed his opponent for almost the whole twelve rounds. Gary Russell’s flashy fast hands seemed to befuddle Lomachenko for perhaps the first half of the first round, but from then on was pretty much all Lomachenko. I think you really would have the be biased in favor of the 26 year old Maryland native to even give him three rounds.

Will Arum let Donaire fight Lomachenko next?

lomachenko99By Chris Williams: Now that Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO’s) has captured the vacant WBA featherweight title after beating #1 WBO Gary Russell Jr last night by virtue of his 12 round majority decision, the question now on the minds of many boxing fans is will Bob Arum of Top Rank let WBA Super World featherweight champion Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KO’s) fight Lomachenko in a unification bout in November or December of this year or will Arum steer the better known Donaire around the Ukrainian fighter to safer waters where Donaire can have a better chance of keeping his WBA title?

We’re already hearing that Donaire might not be giving a rematch against Simpiwe Vetyeka despite the fact that he said he would after their fight from last month ended after just 5 rounds due to Donaire suffering a cut over his eye. For a challenger to win a title off of a cut that he himself suffered is kind of an off-putting way of winning a belt, especially if the challenger doesn’t give the champion a rematch. That right there is going to look bad if Donaire fails to give Vetyeka a rematch.
