Chavez Jr. vs. Zbik, Martirosyan vs. Roman on June 4th

By Dan Amrbrose: Unbeaten #1 World Boxing Council middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) challenges WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO’s) on June 4th at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. Also on the card will be unbeaten Vanes Martirosyan (29-0, 18 KO’s) facing #8 ranked WBC junior middleweight contender Saul Roman (34-8, 18 KOs) for the vacant WBC Silver junior middleweight title. The Chavez-Zbik fight looks to be the better fight because Roman is limping into the Martirosyan fight having lost three out of his last five bouts and should consider himself incredibly lucky to be ranked in the top 10 with that many losses in recent fights.

Martiroysan wants Cotto-Mayorga winner

By Jason Kim: Unbeaten junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KO’s) is hoping he can take on the winner of the March 12th bout between WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and challenger Ricardo Mayorga. Martiroysan, 24, was hoping to be Cotto’s next opponent in March, but was passed over for the better known ex-two time world champion Mayorga, who at 37, probably is much less of a threat to beat Cotto compared to the younger, taller and faster Martiroysan.

Did Cotto duck Martirosyan to fight Mayorga?

Image: Did Cotto duck Martirosyan to fight Mayorga?By Chris Williams: You have to wonder why WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 Ko’s) opted to face 37-year-old Richard Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) on March 12th next year rather than unbeaten number #5 ranked World Boxing Association contender Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KO’s). If I didn’t know better, I’d swear it looks like Cotto is ducking Martirosyan for what appears to be the much easier fight with the old shopworn Mayorga. Now why else would Cotto fight an old guy like Mayorga rather than someone that promises and exciting fight and who would have a great chance of beating him like Martirosyan.

Image: HBO passes on Cotto-Martirosyan for March 12th dateBy Jim Dower: World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) plans on fighting on March 12th against one of three possible opponents. His promoter Bob Arum attempted to line up a fight on HBO against one of his other Top Rank stable fighters Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KO’s) for the March 12th date, according to news from Dan Rafael of ESPN. However, HBO passed on the fight because they already had WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez fighting on that date.

Will Martirosyan fight Lara?

By Dan Ambrose: In looking at the Boxrec earlier today, I noticed that unbeaten junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KO’s) is scheduled to fight unbeaten former Cuban national champion Erislandy Lara (13-0, 8 KO’s) on December 4th at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. I find this kind of hard to believe because I can’t imagine that Martirosyan’s trainer Freddie Roach would ever agree to match Martirosyan against a quality fighter like Lara. Roach says that he would never match one of his fighters against someone he thinks they don’t have a good chance of beating.

Martirosyan interested in fighting Mosley

Image: Martirosyan interested in fighting MosleyBy Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KO’s) is very interested in fighting 39-year-old Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO’s), and has been calling him out on his Twitter page to try and get the former three division world champion Mosley to take him on. Martirosyan, 24, had this to say to Mosley on his Twitter page: “SugarShane, why don’t you fight me next” I wanna fight Shane Mosley. Shane don’t be a b*tch and fight me.” Mosley doesn’t seem all that interested in fighting the mostly unknown Martirosyan, responding back on his twitter page with “Stop talking. It’s not going to happen. Go fight somebody like you up and coming. Maybe in 3 or 4 years you can fight my son. LOL. How about I come down to Freddie [Roach] gym and give you what you want for free. I don’t know you.”

Martirosyan should be the first to collect the $2000 for knocking Pacquiao down in sparring

By Dave Lahr: Unbeaten junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KO’s) will be sparring with Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KO’s) this week at the Widlcard Gym, in Los Angeles, California. Martirosyan will be looking to get Pacquiao ready for his next fight against Antonio Margarito next month, but at the same time, Martirosyan wants to collect the $2000 for being the first sparring partner to knock Pacquiao down during this training camp. None of the other sparring partners have come close to knocking Pacquiao down, but then again they didn’t invite any punchers to spar with Pacquiao.

Is Pacquiao’s sparring with Chavez Jr., Khan and Martirosyan more for their benefit than his?

Image: Is Pacquiao’s sparring with Chavez Jr., Khan and Martirosyan more for their benefit than his?By Chris Williams: I know trainer Freddie Roach has personally picked out three of his fighters – Amir Khan, Vanes Martirosyan and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. – to spar with Manny Pacquiao to get him prepared for Antonio Margarito on November 13th, but is this situation of Pacquiao doing Roach a favor by sparring with these guys rather than Pacquiao getting any real benefit out of it? Let’s be honest here. Chavez, Khan and Martirosyan are nothing like Margarito. I see absolutely nothing in common with them and the Mexican warrior in their style of fighting.

Roach thinks Martirosyan can beat Cotto

Image: Roach thinks Martirosyan can beat CottoBy Dave Lahr: Trainer Freddie Roach thinks his unbeaten fighter Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KO’s) can beat World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s), saying in an article at Philstar.com, “Vanes is being lined up to fight Miguel Cotto. I would never take a fight which I think my fighter couldn’t win. So, yes, I think Cotto.” Ignoring the part where Roach appears to be admitting that he cherry picks opponents for his fighters, it’s hard to picture a hit and run type fighter like Martirosyan beating a guy like Cotto. I see Cotto as a flawed fighter and not what he once was after taking a royal pounding from Antonio Margarito in 2008, but Cotto does really well against fighter that run around the ring all night long looking to just punch and run like Martirosyan.
