Chris Arreola and Seth Mitchell a done deal for September 6th in Indio, California

arreola43By Dan Ambrose: A heavyweight match-up between #3 WBC, Chris Arreola (35-3, 30 KO’s) and #2 WBC, Seth Mitchell (26-1-1, 19 KO’s) is now official for September 6th at the Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California, USA. This should be a good, fast scrape that will probably end with a quick knockout.

The undercard has two fights that are slated to be televised, but they may need a third because Arreola-Mitchell has 1st round knockout written all over it. Mitchell is out of his class in this fight, and will probably be taken out in the 1st round.

Chris Arreola vs. Seth Mitchell almost a done deal for September 6th

arreola33By Eric Thomas: A match-up between heavyweight contenders Chris Arreola (35-3, 30 KO’s) and Seth Mitchell (26-1-1, 19 KO’s) is almost a done deal for September 6th at the Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California, USA. It’s a fight between two flawed heavyweights, but the winner of the fight will be in a good position to get an eventual title shot against the WBC champion.

Mitchell is ranked #2 WBC, and Arreola #3 WBC. So the winner of this fight will be within striking distance of a title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko or Bermane Stiverne, if he’s able to get the WBC title by beating the 42-year-old Vitali or having the title given to him if Vitali ends up getting stripped for not defending the belt.

Victor Ortiz vs. Alfonso Gomez possible for September on Arreola-Mitchell card

ortiz33By Allan Fox: There’s talk of former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) facing 32-year-old former two-time title challenger Alfonso Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KO’s) in September on the same card as the heavyweight match-up between Chris Arreola and Seth Mitchell, according to Steve Kim.

The date Golden Boy Promotions is looking at is September 6th or 14th.

Matching Ortiz-Gomez with Arreola-Mitchell makes a lot of sense because an Arreola vs. Mitchell fight card would likely not attract a lot of attention unless it’s paired with a good undercard name like Ortiz. I can’t say the Ortiz vs. Gomez fight is a good one, not now at least. It might have been a good fight 2 or 3 years ago when Gomez was fighting a little better.

Banks v Mitchell, doors could open for both fighters

mitchell3443By Hayesa: All the talk this weekend is directed towards Adrien Broner v Paulie Malignaggi, but whilst everyone’s focus remains on this showdown, Boxing fans will be keeping a close eye on the heavyweight rematch between Johnathon Banks 29-1 and Seth Mitchell 25-1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Going into the last fight many fight fans had Mitchell their favorite to pick up the win, but this was soon blown out the water after Banks showed an incredible performance to stop Mitchell in two rounds.

Mitchell, like many other young Heavyweights, shows much promise and is doing everything he can to provide America with the long awaited champion they have been searching for.

Banks vs Mitchell, Bika vs Periban on Broner-Malinaggi undercard

banks4By Thomas Cowan: This Saturday, Seth Mitchell faces fellow American heavyweight Johnathon Banks in New York on the Adrien Broner vs Paulie Malinaggi undercard. These two faced each other in Atlantic City in 2012, where heavy favourite Mitchell was blown out in two rounds by Banks. There’s been a lot of hype in the last year about the “new breed” of heavyweights but the hype has been dying down recently.

Mitchell was destroyed by Banks, Deontay Wilder still isn’t fighting anyone remotely good and across the pond David Price was shocked by aging Tony Thompson, while Tyson Fury looked awful against Steve Cunningham. I really can’t see any of these four putting up any kind of fight against a Klitschko brother and I even have serious doubts over whether any of them could last 5 rounds with David Haye.

Seth Mitchell talks about postponed rematch with Johnathon Banks and the future

Mitchell_large_Open Workout_NovBy Ian Aldous: This past week, I had the opportunity to speak with Seth Mitchell (25-1-1) as he looks to get his career back on track after suffering defeat to Johnathon Banks last November. Despite that defeat, Mitchell and his team will look to press on and get the big fights he craves allowing Seth to prove himself as a genuine world heavyweight contender. Seth spoke with me prior to attending the Lamont Peterson vs. Kendall Holt fight last Friday.

Just ten days away from his rematch with Johnathon Banks and a shot at redemption, Seth Mitchell receives the call that all fighters dread during training. “Someone from my team called and told me that Johnathon Banks had hurt his hand and they were gonna get back with me to let me know the severity of it. They said they think he’d broke his hand but waited for the x-rays just to clarify it, so I found out on Tuesday and then on Wednesday it was official that the fight was pretty much (off). Even if I was going to fight, which was highly unlikely because of the late notice, it wasn’t going to be Johnathon Banks.”

Johnathon Banks suffers thumb injury, fight with Seth Mitchell off

banks01By Allan Fox: Heavyweight contender Johathon Banks (29-1-1, 19 KO’s) has reportedly suffered a thumb injury and he won’t be able to make his scheduled February 16th rematch against Seth Mitchell (25-1, 19 KO’s) on the undercard of the Adrien Broner vs. Gavin Rees card at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

So instead of the Banks-Mitchell fight as the co-main event on the card, the WBC super middleweight eliminator bout between Sakio Bika (30-5-2, 21 KO’s) and Nikola Sjekloca (25-0, 7 KO’s) will be moved up to fill the spot.

A perspective on American heavyweights: Wilder, Arreola, Banks, Mitchell, More!

wilder213 - CopyBy Chris Bax: American heavyweight boxing is in a bit of a rut at the moment. The country where greats such as Muhammad Ali, George foreman, Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson, currently has no one capable of winning world honours.

The American journalists and boxing fans have been banging on about unbeaten Deontay Wilder. Whilst he has some skill and a big right hand, anyone half good could look world class against the opposition he has been facing in his 4 year pro career. The fodder that wilder has faced so far has been awful and some weren’t fit to grace the ring in all honesty.

Seth Mitchell exposed in loss to Banks

Image: Seth Mitchell exposed in loss to BanksBy Marcus Stewart: Previously undefeated heavyweight prospect Seth Mitchell was blown away last Saturday night against the tough Jonathan Banks. This didn’t surprise me considering his suspect chin, lack of defence and overall crudeness. Jonathan Banks deserved his win as he did an absolute demolition job on the overrated American.

Many, especially a certain someone, have been singing Mitchell’s praises, despite the fact that he got battered before against 3rd tier fighter Chazz Witherspoon. He took some hefty punches, hit the canvas and showed to many that he struggles to take a punch. This was officially exposed against Banks who completely destroyed him. I am happy for Banks considering he came from the Kronk gym and was able to dedicate his win to Emanuel Steward who in my eyes is levels higher than the overrated Freddie Roach who doesn’t teach his fighter defence, hence why Pacquiao and Khan took a lot of punches in their fights.

Steward smiling down on Banks

Image: Steward smiling down on BanksBy John F. McKenna (McJack): In a display of guts and determination heavyweight Johnathan Banks (29-1-1, 19 KO’s) scored an impressive 2nd round TKO over highly touted Seth Mitchell (25-1-1, 19 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Banks had a game plan which called for him to stay in the pocket risking a KO by the power punching “Mayhem” Mitchell. After Mitchell missed with one of his power punches, Banks launched a power punch of his own and it was timed perfectly.

Johnathan nailed the aggressive Mitchell with a counter right hook which landed on the button. Banks knew he had hurt his larger and stronger opponent and wasted no time following up on his advantage. He landed a series of rights and lefts which deposited Seth on the canvas for the first time in his career.
