Santos Saul Álvarez Barragán, better known as Canelo, which translates to ‘cinnamon’ for his fiery red hair, has spiced up the boxing scene since his debut. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1990, this pugilist has clinched world championships across four weight divisions, making him a staple in the Hall of Fame pantry. Canelo unified titles in three divisions and claimed lineal championships in two, notably overpowering Miguel Cotto in 2015 for the WBC, Ring, and lineal middleweight crowns. Outside the ring, Canelo’s life is just as sweet, sharing it with his two kids, Emily Cinnamon Alvarez and Mía Ener Álvarez, and his wife, Fernanda Gómez, since 2021. According to Forbes, Canelo is worth at least $275 million!
By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC 154lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is taking partial credit for the May 2nd fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao taking place.
Canelo, 24, thinks that one of the reasons for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight taking place is because Canelo said repeatedly that he would be fighting on 5/2 unless Mayweather fought Pacquiao.
By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya has already mapped out his flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next fight after the James Kirkland fight on May 9th. If Canelo defeats Kirkland, then De La Hoya wants to match Canelo against Miguel Cotto and then Floyd Mayweather Jr.
For a fight between Canelo and Cotto to take place it’s going to require for Canelo to agree to a smaller slice of the pie, because the negotiations stalled recently over the purse split when Cotto and Canelo attempted to put a fight together.
By Dan Ambrose: Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and 30-year-old James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) will be hitting two cities today as part of a two-city promotional tour in Texas to attract fans into purchasing tickets for their fight on May 9th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
The two fighters will visit Houston and San Antonio as part of the two-city tour.
Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for the 24-year-old Canelo, are hoping to sellout the 45,000 seat Minute Maid stadium by May 9th. They’re obviously hoping that enough fans from the local area in Texas will be enough to sellout the stadium.
It doesn’t hurt that some of the tickets will be selling for just $10. Canelo was able to attract over 40,000 fans to come see him fight Austin Trout in April 2013 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) is confident that his hand will be raised on May 9th at the end of his fight against American James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) in their fight at the Minute Maid Stadium in Houston, Texas. The fight will take place at a catch-weight of 155 pounds.
With boxing fans excited about the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight, few fans are talking about Canelo’s fight against the ring rusty Kirkland.
Part of the reason for that is because Kirkland hasn’t fought since 2013, and he’s been largely forgotten about by a lot of fans. Further, the younger boxing fans have never heard of Kirkland, because it’s been so long since he was really relevant at 154. His inactivity has caused him to be left behind by a lot of fans.
By Dan Ambrose: In an effort to drum up interest in their May 9th fight, former WBA/WBC 154 pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) will be going on a short two-city promotional tour next Tuesday, March 2nd in Houston and San Antonio, Texas.
The Canelo-Kirkland fight isn’t a pay-per-view bout like most of Canelo’s fights are nowadays. The fight will be televised on regular HBO. The Canelo vs. Kirkland fight will take place on 5/9 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya expects that the May 9th fight between his flagship fighter 24-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) to sell a huge amount of tickets in their fight at the Minute Maid Park, in Houston, Texas, USA.
The price of the tickets certainly will help make that a reality, as the lowest cost of the tickets are $10. It goes up from there with the tickets being sold for $350, $150, $100, $50, and $25. In contrast, the minimum price for the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight are going for $1000, and it goes up dramatically from there.
The Canelo-Kirkland tickets will go on sale next week on March 3rd at 10:00 a.m. De La Hoya previously said that he feels that the Canelo-Kirkland fight will sell 60,000 tickets. That obviously won’t be possible given the size dimensions of the Minute Maid Stadium, which seats a little over 40,000.
By DA: #13 WBA,#2 WBC, and #5 IBF Middleweight contender David Lemieux is reportedly in talks to be apart of the upcoming Saul “Canelo” Alvarez – James Kirkland undercard on May 9th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. This report came from LA times reporter Lance Pugmire in an interview with Oscar De la Hoya about 2015 being Boxing’s biggest year and Canelo Alvarez.
If Lemieux does get put as the co-main event that makes the card a lot better especially since it’ll be a championship bout given that Lemieux recently accepted the IBF’s offer in facing Hassan N’Dam for the vacant belt. The belt was held briefly by former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor but due to legal issues Taylor was stripped of his title assuming he won’t be able to make defenses of the belt. Taylor won the belt by defeating Sam Soliman in which he dropped Soliman several times.

While De La Hoya previously mentioned wanting to move the Canelo-Kirkland fight to May 9th if the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight were to take place on May 2nd, it is now official.
The Canelo-Kirkland fight is now been moved to May 9th in Houston, Texas. There had been talk of the fight being staged in San Antonio, Texas at the Alamodome, but De La Hoya decided to move it for some reason.
By Dan Ambrose: The match-up between former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs), which had previously been scheduled for May 2nd, has been moved to May 9th, according to Steve Kim.
Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez reported that the Canelo-Kirkland fight will be moved to May 9th. The fight will be televised by HBO from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya is predicting a record breaking crowd of 60,000 fans for the fight. That’s a great number.
By Jermill Pennington: Yesterday I had an article posted that had Demetrius Andrade (21-0 14ko) the current WBO super welterweight champion tearing in to Canelo Alvarez for choosing to fight James Kirkland this coming May. Andrade went on a tirade when asked about the current situation with Alvarez’s choice of Kirkland for his upcoming fighting calling Alvarez a “b!+@&” several times. Andrade in my estimation seemed to be doing a bit more then trash talking, these assertions made towards Alvarez seemed to have a personal undertone to them.
To be clear I am one who loves trash talk, especially in a sport where two mean punch each other for 36 minutes. However I do believe there’s a line you can cross that separates talking trash in a sportsman like fashion to insulting a man personally. It was said that Ali crossed the line leading in to the first fight with Frazier calling him ugly and a gorilla. Frazier seemed to be scared by those comments to the point that he seemed to take pride in Ali’s current condition once saying on camera “look what I did to him”.
