Why is Canelo being pushed towards Mayweather?

floyd#001By Tom Drury: The drums are banging for a Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez match-up for September 14th. These two men are arguably the biggest stars in boxing. However, Alvarez still has to cement his status as one of the best fighters on the planet. Firstly, I would like to say I was a critic of Alvarez due to his padded and weak resume and was one of the first to speak out believing he would be schooled by Austin Trout.

How wrong could I be. Alvarez showed maturity, ring generalship and sharp boxing skills in that fight, winning convincingly in my opinion.

Before comments start pouring in about Mayweather “ducking” Alvarez, think about what your saying. It is a fact that Alvarez can barely make 154. If he was to, he would rehydrate to around 170 on fight night. Mayweather is a natural 147.

De La Hoya: Canelo can’t make 147 for Mayweather fight

delahoya993By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions says his fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) can’t possibly make 147 lbs. even if he wanted to for a big money fight against boxing’s biggest star Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) on September 14th.

The only way the fight can happen is if Mayweather moves up in weight to 154 so that the younger 22-year-old Canelo doesn’t have to struggle with making weight.

Canelo to pick up WBA strap in Panama

canelo22By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be traveling to Panama on Tuesday to pick up his World Boxing Association 154 lb. title that he captured last month in a win over Austin Trout in San Antonio, Texas.

According to The Record, Canelo is hoping to hold down both the WBA and WBC titles at the same time in order to be the unified champion.

This is going to be interesting to see if the World Boxing Council makes an acceptation in his case because in my understanding they don’t allow their champions to hold other belts.

Canelo’s September 14th PPV date will flounder if he competes with Mayweather

canelo1By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) is stubbornly committed to fighting on September 14th with or without Floyd Mayweather Jr. Canelo says September 14th, which is the Mexican Independence day, is his date and he’s not moving off of it.

That sounds all well and good except that if his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions aren’t able to set up a pay per view fight between him and Mayweather for September 14th, Canelo will find himself competing with Mayweather’s own PPV fight on that night. That’s just not going to happen.

Should Mayweather fight Canelo in September?

By Chip Mitchell: Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer alleges that he’s been actively negotiating a September showdown between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter almost 15 years his junior.

The sticking point seems to be at which weight the fight will take place. Neither side appears to be backing down, as Alvarez, who fights at 154 and Mayweather at 147 stand firm.

Canelo will have to move off September 14th date if he doesn’t face Mayweather

canelo454By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) is in a bad situation as far as his next fight date goes on September 14th. Canelo absolutely has to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on that date because if he doesn’t, he’s going to be bumped from that date by Mayweaher Jr.

Canelo wants to fight on September 14th in order to take advantage of the Mexican Independence holiday. The problem is Canelo wants that to be his first pay per view fight. Well, he’s not going to draw flies if Mayweather goes ahead and fights on that date as well.

If Canelo believes he can beat Mayweather, he should fight him at 147

canelo400By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez isn’t popular enough to call the shots to Floyd Mayweather Jr. to tell him that he has to come up to 154 to fight him. If Canelo only 22-years-old, and he doesn’t have the experience or the fan base to pressure Mayweather to ever fight him at 154.

When you’re a young fighter like Canelo, you’re supposed to pay your dues and fight the more experienced, more talented and the much accomplished fighter at his own weight, not yours.

Mayweather: The Last 5 Defining Opponents

floyd10By Mateo Miranda: Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the eyes of boxing is like a quarter one side believes he’s the best fighter of all time and on the other side he’s the best business man on the planet who has always held the cards in his hand and has laid out the cards of opponents who have lead him to become undefeated champion and almost billionaire.

The debate between heads and tales can go on for days, weeks, months, and years. But Floyd can put an end to all the nonsense and engrave his name on the side which represents the best fighter of all time by taking on the last 5 defining opponents that would silence the negative side of the quarter and leaving them without an argument to make.

Austin Trout: Many will say he’s leftover’s from Saul Alvarez. But how many of Manny Pacquiao leftover’s has Floyd digested throughout the years? Nevertheless Trout’s bout with Alvarez was a really close fight so it will be in Floyd’s best interest to show “no doubt” his type of caliber is greater than Alvarez.

Smith: Canelo rules out fighting Mayweather at a catchweight

canelo5434By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has reportedly said no to the idea of him fighting WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. at a catchweight of 150-151, according to Stephen A. Smith of ESPN. Canelo only wants the fight at 154, so if Mayweather wants to fight him, he’ll have to come up to Canelo’s weight class to make the fight happen.

Smith said to ESPN “Canelo is a big boy and he’s a bigger boy. He’s a big dude…he walks around bigger. Canelo is on record saying he won’t do the catchweight…but if he wants to make big money, he’s going to have to shave off three pounds and not fight at 154. Canelo is really a junior middleweight that an fight as a middleweight.”

Canelo Alvarez versus Floyd Mayweather: A risky fight for Golden Boy to make

canelo443By Dallas Orysiuk: There is no doubt that a fight between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez would be huge, especially on the weekend of Mexican Independence Day on September 14th. Alvarez is undefeated with a record of 42-0-1 (30 KOs) meanwhile Mayweather holds an undefeated record of 44-0-0 (26 KOs) against far greater opposition.

Floyd Mayweather has beaten the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Diego Corrales, Arturo Gatti, and Robert Guerrero to name a few. Meanwhile Alvarez has been pampered up until his previous fight, fighting tomato cans, cab drivers, blown up welterweights and fighters well past their prime.

In his most recent victory, Canelo impressed fans by giving Austin Trout his first loss.
