Canelo says Cotto fight won’t be like Mayweather-Pacquiao

1-cotto-canelo-m (10)By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) is guaranteeing that his November 21st match-up against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) will be an exciting fight and totally unlike the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight on May 2nd this year.

Canelo seems to think that his fight will be better fight, but Canelo didn’t look good in his fights against Erislandy Lara, Austin Trout and Mayweather. Those weren’t boring fights because of Canelo’s opponents.

Canelo has to be favored over Cotto, says Malignaggi

Image: Canelo has to be favored over Cotto, says MalignaggiBy Dan Ambrose: With two months to go before the November 21st clash between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs), there is a great deal of indecision about which of these two fighters will emerge as the winner in their bout on HBO pay-per-view from the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino, Events Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While some boxing fans believe that Cotto’s experience and brute power will be enough for him to get the victory, other fans see the 25-year-old Canelo’s youth and size being too much for the 34-year-old Cotto.

Stevenson-Karpency averaged 581K viewers on Spike

By Tim Fletcher: Last Friday’s fight between WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) and challenger Tommy Karpency (25-5-1, 14 KOs) brought in disappointing ratings on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV from the Ricoh Coliseum, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The fight brought in an average of 581,000 viewers on Spike with a peak of 784,000. Those numbers likely reflect the poor match-up that the fight was. Stevenson’s adviser Al Haymon should have known from the moment the contract was signed that there would be little fan interest in this mismatch.

Will Canelo take over for Mayweather as boxing’s No.1 PPV star?

1-cotto-canelo-m (9)By Dan Ambrose: Now that superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. has ended his long 19-year pro career with a win over Andre Berto last Saturday night, Mayweather will be leaving a void that will need to be filled by someone as the sport’s No.1 pay-per-view attraction.

You can’t really say it’s Manny Pacquiao because he’s pretty much finished with his career as well at this point, and we don’t even know whether boxing fans will bother to purchase his remaining fights next year after the disappointing fight between him and Mayweather last May in the “Fight of the Century,” which turned out to be an overpriced dud.

Is the sport of boxing better off without Mayweather?

Leon: Before you, the reader, automatically assume that I’m not a fan of pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr, due to the article’s title, you would be incorrect. I enjoy Mayweather’s ring dominance and his defensive-minded style, although many other people would call it boring.

As a boxer, Mayweather has proven time and time again, that his defense and sharpshooting offense is second to none and as he proudly recites, “forty nine have tried but none succeeded”. But as a business man, Mayweather has taken complete control of boxing’s Junior Welterweight to Middleweight divisions, for the past decade, due to the ever present opportunity to be the lucky boxer to face him.

Canelo re-ups with Golden Boy Promotions in multi-fight extension

Image: Canelo re-ups with Golden Boy Promotions in multi-fight extensionBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) has reportedly signed a multi-year contract extension with Golden Boy Promotions. It’s unclear whether it’s the best deal for the 25-year-old Canelo, because he probably would have fetched a big price if he’d been willing to put himself on the market so that the other promotional companies like Roc Nation Sports, Top Rank, and K2 could have bid for his services.

Canelo has already been with Golden Boy for years now, and has had one big fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. during all that time.

Canelo Alvarez re-signs with Golden Boy

Golden Boy Promotions today announced that Mexican superstar and former WBC and WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Álvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) has re-signed with the company, agreeing to a multi-fight, multi-year contract extension.

“I am loyal, it’s part of my character and that’s why I am extending my contract with Golden Boy Promotions,”said Álvarez. “Golden Boy Promotions knows how to build a fighter and elevate him to a world stage as they have done with me and continue to do with many others. I look forward to working with Golden Boy throughout my career.”

Roach: Cotto will beat Canelo, you can bet on it!

Image: Roach: Cotto will beat Canelo, you can bet on it!By Allan Fox: Trainer Freddie Roach is so confident that his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) will be winning his next fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) on November 21st that Roach is even telling the media that they can bet on the 34-year-old Cotto coming out on top against the 25-year-old Mexican fighter.

Roach believes that Cotto will get to Canelo in the later rounds of the fight to score a knockout. Roach isn’t saying but it appears that he thinks that the younger Canelo has stamina problems that Cotto will be able to exploit in this fight to his benefit.

Mayweather cool to the idea of fighting the Cotto-Canelo winner for 50th fight

Image: Mayweather cool to the idea of fighting the Cotto-Canelo winner for 50th fightBy Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) spoke during a conference call with reporters earlier today to mostly talk about his next fight against Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) on September 12th on Showtime pay-per-view, and to talk his boxing career.

During the call, the 38-year-old Mayweather was asked if he’d be interested in fighting the winner of the November 21st fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and he said he didn’t see the point in fighting one of them for his 50th fight.
