Canelo-Lara to fight to take place at 155lb

canelo677By Dan Ambrose: As I expected, the July 12th fight between WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez won’t have Lara’s WBA 154lb title on the line for the fight, because Canelo doesn’t want to fight for it. So instead of this being a junior middleweight fight, it’s going to take place in the middleweight division at 155lbs.

The middleweight division weight limit is from 155-160lbs. By having it beyond the 154lb limit, it’ll make it a little – but not a lot – easier for the red-headed Canelo to make weight for the fight. In his last fight against Alfredo Angulo last March, Canelo had the weight increased to 155 after he started having problems getting down to the 154lb limit. Canelo ended up rehydrating 20lbs to 175lbs after making weight.

Canelo vs. Lara = 50-50 fight, says Schaefer

canelo74By Dan Ambrose: Yesterday, WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) both revealed that they’ll be facing each other on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. They both want to give boxing fans the fight that they most want to see, and that’s why they’ve agreed to face each other in this pay-per-view fight on Showtime. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he sees this fight as a tossup fight, and he’s unable to pick the winner.

“It’s a 50-50 fight,” Schaefer said to RingTV. “The two best junior middleweights not named Mayweather, fighting each other.”

Saul “Canelo” Alavarez, The New Oscar De La Hoya

canelo999By Mauricio Carranza: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) is fighting WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) On July 12th at the MGM Grand Casino and Hotel, which should be a good fight if things go well for the young Mexican fighter because let’s face it, Lara has a style that can sometimes put people to sleep.

Even though I believe that Lara can win by boxing and moving well, I think it would be better for boxing if Canelo wins, simply because Canelo seems to be the new Oscar De La Hoya.

Canelo’s manager says Erislandy Lara a strong candidate for next fight

canelo74By Dan Ambrose: Eddy Reynoso, the trainer and manager for former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s), is saying that WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) is one of the leading candidates for the red-haired Canelo’s next fight in July. Carlos Molina and James Kirkland are also candidates, however.

“I can tell you that Lara is the most viable,” Reynoso said to ESPN Deportes. “He is the most feasible. I think it would be an interesting fight for all people. Carlos Molina is on the move, and the same with Kirkland. But Lara is the best, and is a clear advantage over the others.”

Canelo looking to fight in July

canelo467By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) met with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer last week in Golden Boy’s downtown office in Los Angeles, California to discuss his next fight in the summer. Canelo wants to fight on July 26th, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. However, that’s not really going to work because that falls on the same date as the talked about match-up between Gennady Golovkin and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on HBO pay-per-view.

Unless the red-haired Canelo was to be fighting an exciting opponent with a real chance of beating him like Erislandy Lara, there’s no way that he could compete with the huge interest that will be there for the Chavez Jr-Golovkin fight.

Who should Canelo fight next?

canelo1360By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) was able to get a victory last month in halting the hand-picked Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s) by a 10th round in a fight that did little to erase the memory of Canelo’s one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year in September. The reason why the defeat didn’t do anything to make boxing fans forget about how lost Canelo looked against Mayweather was because of how poor Angulo looked.

It’s going to take someone a lot better than Angulo for fans to start believing in the flat-footed Canelo, and it’s unlikely that Golden Boy Promotions are going to risk putting him in with someone that is actually good like Erislandy Lara. Canelo, #2 WBA, #2 WBC, #12 IBF, already closed the door on a fight against Lara by telling him that he has to wait his turn. In other words, Lara isn’t going to get a chance to clown Canelo the way that Mayweather did.

The numbers don’t lie

canelo111By Daniel Hughes: There is a growing concern that the issue of fighters missing weight is now becoming all too common. The boxing world has certainly argued about the rehydration issue. Fighters draining themselves hitting the stipulated weight, then putting back 20 plus pounds by fight time.

The argument being well they made weight, unless you have an agreed limit or a second weigh in the fighter has done little wrong. The old days of the same day weigh-in, has left a window to exploit, many do some to great affect others not so. It is something that derives mixed views but the scales don’t lie you make it or miss it.

Saul Alvarez – Adrien Broner – Danny Garcia. Business wise or Family loyalty?

canelo7767By Gerardo Granados: Was it necessary for Danny Garcia to have struggled that much against Mauricio Herrera or could it be possible that if he had have a savvy corner he would have adjusted in order to win convincingly instead of have lost in the eyes of many boxing fans? Garcia is a talented fighter but he might have reached the limit for his trainer to improve his overall boxing skills and if Herrera had been a power puncher instead of a light hitting boxer then Danny could have lost the fight even by stoppage.

Other young lions have struggled and lost his recent fights; Adrien Broner was beaten by brave pressure fighter Marcos Maidana who previously lost to good boxers. Maybe “the problem” was that Adrien thought he could walk down Maidana just as he did when he was a super feather or lightweight, but definitely he had the wrong game plan and never was able to adjust to surpass a brawler using is superior speed and mobility or by establishing a crisp jab.

Canelo already training for his next fight

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) is already back in the gym training for his next fight on July 26th against an opponent still to be determined. Golden Boy Promotions hasn’t picked out Canelo’s next opponent will be, but you can probably eliminate WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, because Canelo already told him “you have to wait.” That’s code for ‘I’m not interested in fighting you, and I probably never will be.’
