Cotto-Canelo possible for November 21st, says Peñagarícano

1-cotto (7)By Dan Ambrose: Gabriel Peñagarícano, the adviser for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs), says they’re making a lot of progress in the negotiations with former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) for their mega-fight on HBO pay-per-view.

Peñagarícano says they’re looking at November 21st as a possible date for the fight, and they’ve narrowed the cities down to Las Vegas, Nevada or New York. Las Vegas is the No.1 choice right now with New York No.2. Dallas, Texas is also a possibility. They’re hoping to announce the fight in July once they have the signatures on the contracts.

Cotto has an advantage over Canelo due to Roach, says Arum

1-cotto (9)By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) is really up against it in his next fight against the younger 24-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) next September in their fight in November on HBO Championship Boxing.

Cotto will be facing his first quality opponent in three years since his loss to Austin Trout in 2012. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks that Canelo is the favorite in this fight due to his youth and the fact that he hasn’t been involved in as many wars as the 34-year-old Cotto. However, Arum sees Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach as being a huge asset for him, because if Roach’s ability to put together good game plans for his fighters.

The contracts for the fight haven’t been completed as of yet, but Roach is still confident that the remaining items that need to be agreed on will get done so that the fight can go ahead as planned in November. Canelo wants Cotto fight in Texas, not Las Vegas, NV

canelo681588By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) reportedly wants his fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) to take place in Texas, where he’s got a tremendous following, rather than in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Steve Kim.

The only way the 24-year-old Canelo is going to be able to get his fight against Cotto to take place in Texas is if the Puerto Rican star agrees to it. In other words, Canelo doesn’t have the negotiating muscle to force the venue on Cotto. If Canelo was negotiating with his past opponents Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo, he could tell them the fight was going to need to take place in Texas, and if they didn’t grant him his wish, he would just move on and find someone who would give him the green light.

Cotto can’t beat Canelo without Roach, says Arum

arum55By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks that WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) can’t beat Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) without trainer Freddie Roach to get him ready for their fight on November 21st or 28th of this year.

Arum thinks that Roach’s training expertize gives Cotto a good chance in this fight. Without Roach, Arum sees Canelo dominating the fight. With Roach, and it’s a close fight that Cotto can win, says Arum.

Golovkin making a mistake of letting Cotto-Canelo fight take place if winner doesn’t agree to face him

1-golovkin3 (14)By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0 30 KOs) is supposed to be fighting for the WBC middleweight title next against the current catch-weight belt holder Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs), but instead of Golovkin getting his mandatory shot, Cotto is looking to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next, who doesn’t even fight officially in the middleweight division.

Canelo definitely fights more now at middleweight than he does at junior middleweight, but that’s unofficial and he still calls himself a junior middleweight, even though he stopped fighting in that weight division two years ago.
