Thurman: I’m similar to Canelo, but I’m not flat-footed

thurman3455By Dan Ambrose: WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) made an interesting comparison today in comparing himself to former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) with his fighting style, but he sees himself as having better boxing skills, head movement, and not being flat-footed like Canelo.

Thurman sees his boxing ability and punching power as something that would give him a real chance to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. if he chooses him as his next opponent on September 12th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Felix Trinidad Picks Canelo over Cotto, Discredits Cotto’s Recent Wins

1-CaneloKirklandWorkout3By Raj Parmar: Puerto Rican boxing icon Felix Trinidad is seemingly not a huge fan of his countryman and current middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. As the megabout between Cotto and popular Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez gets closer to being finalized for later this year, Trinidad is siding with Canelo to get the victory.

While it is one thing to pick who you really feel is going to win a fight, Felix seems to go out of his way to play down Cotto’s recent wins.

Canelo with too many advantages for Cotto to deal with

canelo90By Allan Fox: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach has a lot of boxing fans convinced that he singlehandedly resurrected the 34-year-old Cotto’s career with his training techniques by having him use more left hooks and focusing more on his power than before.

Other boxing fans believe the only thing that’s changed in Cotto is he’s been matched up against three consecutive weak fighters in the past two years. This is all going to change in November when Cotto steps inside the ring with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) of Mexico in a fight that will very likely be televised in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 21st.

Cotto vs. Canelo fight close to being done

canelo667By Dan Ambrose: The much talked about mega-fight between the stars of the 154lb and 160lb divisions WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is close to being done. According to Lance Pugmire, the fight could be done by as early as next week. That would be a big deal because the fight is the biggest thing on the horizon for the sport right now.

Dan Rafael expects that it could bring in as many as 1 million pay-per-view buys on HBO, but not more than that. I agree with Rafael. I think it’s a good fight, but it’s not going to be a monster fight because neither guy has established himself to be a PPV star when headlining a fight. They both needed Floyd Mayweather Jr. to bring in big PPV numbers.

Is Lemieux being saved for Canelo by Golden Boy?

lemieux665By Dan Ambrose: After David Lemieux’s recent 12 round decision win over Hassan N’Dam (31-2, 18 KOs) to capture the vacant IBF middleweight title on June 20th last month, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya ruled out any chance of Lemieux immediately fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in a unification fight.

De La Hoya’s reasoning for dismissing the fight was because Lemieux had a mandatory defense due for his newly won IBF title. In other words, the IBF wouldn’t allow Lemieux to face Golovkin even if he wanted to.

Cotto vs. Canelo fight to take place at 155lbs

cotto111By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) have agreed to come in at the lowest weight possible for the middleweight division at 155lbs for their catch-weight fight in November on HBO pay-per-view, says Dan Rafael.

The 155 catch-weight is just over the middleweight limit to make the fight still a middleweight bout. The middleweight division goes from 155 to 160, so they barely made it with that weight.

Cotto wants 155, Canelo 156 for catch-weight

canelo06By Dan Ambrose: While WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) are both in agreement as far as there being the need for a catch-weight for their November fight, they’re not in agreement to the actual weight for their pay-per-view contest on HBO. Cotto wants the lower catch-weight of 155lbs, whereas Canelo prefers the slightly higher weight of 156lbs, according to ESPN Deportes.

It makes sense for Cotto to make it as low as possible because Canelo rehydrates into the mid-170s, and that’s 20 pounds. For most fighters, it’s really hard on them to take that kind of weight off, but Canelo has been doing it for a while now, and he doesn’t seem to have any problems with yet.

Cotto won’t vacate his WBC title after Canelo fight to avoid Golovkin

cotto00000By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) plans on keeping his WBC 160lb title after his next defense against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) in November rather than vacating it to avoid his No.1 WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), according to Roc Nation Sports COO David Iskowitch.

He told Fight News that they will look to make sure Cotto keeps his WBC title after the Canelo fight. Just what that means is unclear. Cotto was supposed to be fighting Golovkin next, but both the WBC and Golovkin agreed to let the Cotto-Canelo fight take place as long as Golovkin gets the next shot at the title.

Cotto-Canelo possible for November 21st, says Peñagarícano

1-cotto (7)By Dan Ambrose: Gabriel Peñagarícano, the adviser for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs), says they’re making a lot of progress in the negotiations with former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) for their mega-fight on HBO pay-per-view.

Peñagarícano says they’re looking at November 21st as a possible date for the fight, and they’ve narrowed the cities down to Las Vegas, Nevada or New York. Las Vegas is the No.1 choice right now with New York No.2. Dallas, Texas is also a possibility. They’re hoping to announce the fight in July once they have the signatures on the contracts.
