Canelo says Golovkin must fight him at 155lb catch-weight

Cotto-Canelo-LAPC-(Credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: If IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) wants to face Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) in 2016 or later, he’s going to need to agree to fight him at a catch-weight of 155 pounds, because that’s the weight that Canelo wants the fight to take place at.

Believe it or not, the 25-year-old Canelo feels that he’s not a true 160lb fighter yet, even though he rehydrates to as high as 175lbs for his fights at 155lbs. That’s 15 pounds over the 160lb middleweight limit. It’s very peculiar that Canelo doesn’t want to fight Golovkin at 160, because Canelo actually weighs more than Golovkin after he rehydrates.

Rosado: Canelo will fight Cotto at 155, then say he’s not a middleweight

1-cotto-canelo-m (5)By Dan Ambrose: Former world title challenger Gabriel Rosado thinks former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) is a genuine 100% middleweight at this point in his career, but he thinks that he’s afraid to admit it because he’s trying to run a game so that he can avoid fighting the bigger middleweights.

Rosado doesn’t say who the bigger middleweights are, but you would have to assume that IBF/IBO/WBA champion Gennady Golovkin and Peter Quillin are two guys that he has in mind. Rosado believes that after Canelo faces WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) on November 21st, he’ll then say he’s not a middleweight afterwards.

Cotto-Canelo undercard leaves a lot to be desired

1-cotto-canelo-nyc (6)By Dan Ambrose: The boxing fans that purchase the November 21st fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) on HBO pay-per-view, they’re not going to get a great undercard for their money. In my opinion, the Cotto vs. Canelo undercard is a rather dull one to say the least.

What this means is that the fans will need to be mostly content with paying $65 to see the Cotto-Canelo main event because there aren’t big names on the undercard. There’s talk of WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward fighting on the undercard against little known 168lb contender Rohan Murdock (18-1, 14 KOs) in the co-feature, but that fight hasn’t been announced yet and it’s still unknown if we’ll be seeing Ward on the card.

Canelo: The Mayweather fight helped me improve

1-cotto-canelo-m (9)By Dan Ambrose: Despite getting beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr two years ago by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision, former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) thinks that the defeat helped improve him as a fighter.

Just how it helped the 25-year-old Canelo improve is the big question. Canelo didn’t look improved at all in his subsequent fights against Erislandy Lara, Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland. The only difference is Canelo was facing lesser fighters.

Sanchez wants Golovkin to fight in February

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez says he hopes that Golovkin can be back inside the ring in the next three months to fight in February against either the winner of the November 21st fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or IBF mandatory challenge Tureano Johnson.

Sanchez doesn’t know if the Cotto-Canelo winner will be ready to fight Golovkin that soon after their November fight, or if the winner will agree to fight him at all period. If not, then Sanchez wants Golovkin back in the ring fighting Tureano.

Loeffler: Golovkin’s next fight is based on what happens with Cotto-Canelo

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Tim Fletcher: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says that he won’t be making a decision about Golovkin’s next fight until the November 21st fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is decided.

Loeffler is waiting to see if the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight will agree to fight Golovkin. If not, then Loeffler will need to either schedule Golovkin to face his IBF mandatory challenger Tureano Johnson, or wait and see who HBO has in mind for Golovkin. There aren’t a lot of options for Golovkin unfortunately.

De La Hoya: Golovkin vs. Canelo will eventually happen

1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos2By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya gave a big hint last night that we could be seeing his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) dodging a unification fight against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) if Canelo defeats WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in their fight next month on November 21st at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya said last night that the Golovkin-Canelo fight will happen sooner or later. This could be code for Canelo not facing Golovkin for some time, possibly two to three years.

“Absolutely, it’s a fight [Golovkin vs. Canelo] that should be made,” De La Hoya said to secondsout. “Eventually it’s going to happen. Golovkin won hands down, and I take my hat off to him, but it’s raw power. You’re talking about a fighter who has fought a lot of fighters with a lot of styles. There’s a lot of vulnerability there. So a Canelo fight against Golovkin, it has to happen.”

Cotto has the advantage over Canelo, says Rosado

cotto (3)By Dan Ambrose: There are quite a few boxing fans who are leaning in the direction of Saul “ Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) to defeat WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in their fight next month on November 21st on HBO pay-per-view at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rosado thinks that Cotto’s superior boxing ability will enable him to out-box Canelo and get the victory. Rosado notes that the type of fighters that have given Cotto problems in the past where aggressive fighters that put a lot of pressure on him. Canelo doesn’t have the engine to fight hard for more than 10 seconds at a time before he has to back off and take a rest break on the outside.
