Khan: The Canelo fight is getting more attention than Mayweather-Pacquiao

khan67000By Tim Fletcher: Amir Khan is expecting big things with his upcoming title shot against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on HBO PPV on May 7th. Khan has been overwhelmed by the attention the fight has received from the media and the fans from around the world.

The attention the fight has attracted isn’t just isolated to the United States and the UK. It’s worldwide. Khan believes that the attention his fight against Canelo is receiving is more than the notoriety the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight gained last year in May. That fight brought in 4.6 million pay-per-view buys.

If Canelo vs. Khan could bring in even half that number, it would give both fighters a tremendous payday. It’s unknown what the money split is for Khan. But even if he got the low end on a 70-30 split of the revenue, he would stand to make a great deal of money if the fight generates over 2 million pay-per-view buys.

Will the WBC force Canelo to fight Golovkin at 160?

golovkin5554(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Dan Ambrose: What remains to be seen later this year is whether the World Boxing Council will force their WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to face his #1 WBC challenger Gennady Golovkin at the full weight of 160lbs for their fight?

Golovkin, his promoter Tom Loeffler, and trainer Abel Sanchez, have all said that they will not give in and agree to fight Canelo at a catch-weight of 155lbs. They insist that the fight must take place at 160lbs. Normally, a world champion can only insist that their challengers agree to a catch-weight when it’s a voluntary defense and not a mandatory.

Hearn: Canelo-Khan without rehydration clause is madness

hearn53By Dan Ambrose: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn thinks Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) made a mistake in agreeing to fight WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) without a rehydration clause in the contract to limit how much weight the 25-year-old Canelo can gain back for their May 7 fight on HBO pay-per-view.

Without a rehydration clause, Hearn sees Canelo rehydrating up to at least 175lbs for the fight. Hearn notes that the highest that Khan has ever fought at was at 160 for his fight against Devon Alexander in 2014. If Khan stays at that weight, he’d be giving away 15 pounds to Canelo, and it could be even more than that if Canelo rehydrates into the 180s.

“I don’t think it’s a great move for Khan in having the fight at 155,” said Hearn to IFL TV. “Canelo is probably going to be 175 on the night.

Khan: Once I beat Canelo, I’ll be the top guy in the world

khan5655By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan sees himself as being on the verge of replacing Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao as the top fighter in the sport of boxing. Khan says that someone has to replace Mayweather and Pacquiao as the top, and he believes it’ll be him that takes over once he beats WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in their fight on May 7 on HBO PPV.

Khan isn’t worried about all about fighting at the 155lb catch-weight for the fight, because he plans on bulking up by training hard rather than eating his way to 155. Khan says he’s going to bulk up and then hand Canelo another loss on his resume.

I hate to break this to Khan, but someone already has taken over for Mayweather and Pacquiao as the sport’s biggest star. That person is the 25-year-old Canelo. I don’t think Khan is going to be able to nudge Canelo aside to take over the stop spot.

Khan: It’s my time to make history and show people how great I am

khan45673By Dan Ambrose: Since the Amir Khan vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight was first announced earlier this past week, few boxing fans have been giving the 29-year-old Khan much of any chance to beat the hard hitting Mexican star Canelo in their scheduled fight on HBO pay-per-view on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Overall, the fans largely see Khan as little more than a slender, flawed, underachieving, fragile-chinned fighter. The fans doubt that Khan will be able to stay on his feet for the full 12 rounds with the heavy pressure Canelo will be putting on him in this fight.

Khan says he’s going to prove the fans wrong and make history in the process by showing the world how great he is.

Khan won’t get Canelo ready for GGG

1-CANELO ALVAREZ 05By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will get a nice payday and a lot of attention for his fight against Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on May 7, but the clash will not get Canelo ready in any way for his tougher and more important fight against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs).

Khan, 29, can crack a little when he lands cleanly, but he does not have the punching power, boxing skills or the chin that Golovkin has. Khan is the ideal opponent to get Canelo ready for a fight against Golovkin.

Theophane: Khan can beat Canelo with speed like Mayweather did

khan44By Scott Gilfoid: Mayweather Promotions fighter Ashley Theophane thinks former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) has a chance of getting the better of the bigger and stronger WBC 160lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) if he uses his superior hand speed and footwork in their fight on May 7.

Theophane says that Floyd Mayweather Jr. was able to beat Canelo with his hand speed and boxing skills in their fight in 2013, so he thinks it is definitely possible for Khan to beat him too. With that said, Theophane, 35, is siding with Canelo to win the fight based on his size advantage.

Theophane expects Canelo to be big after he rehydrates in the 24 hours before the fight, and he sees the Mexican star looking huge on the night of the fight.

Khan could outbox Canelo, says Kenny Porter

khan56By Allan Fox: Trainer Kenny Porter thinks Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) has an opportunity to outbox the bigger WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in their mega-fight on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view.

Kenny, the father/trainer of former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter, understands that it is going to be a huge jump up in weight for the 29-year-old Khan, who has been fighting at welterweight the last couple of years. However, Kenny likes the teaming of Khan with trainer Virgil Hunter. He thinks the two of them could come up with a great game plan that will enable Khan to box his way to a decision victory over Canelo.

The chances of Khan getting a knockout over Canelo are very slim. If Khan tries to KO Canelo, it could end badly for him. Khan must focus on trying to win a decision in the same way that Floyd Mayweather Jr. did in his 12 round decision win over Canelo in 2013.

Malignaggi: Canelo-Khan is a waste of time

1-canelo 2By Tim Fletcher: Former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi doesn’t like the recently announced fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Amir Khan. Malignaggi sees the contest as a mismatch due to Canelo’s huge weight and punching power advantage. Malignaggi sees it as a waste of time for the fight to take place because he doesn’t think Khan will be able to make it past the sixth round due to Canelo’s advantage in size and power.

Malignaggi thinks that Khan could get potentially badly hurt in this fight if he gets knocked out cold by the 25-year-old Canelo, and he believes there’s a possibility that Khan will never be the same fighter after this bout is over with.

Khan: Canelo is a flat-footed fighter, I can beat him

Image: Khan: Canelo is a flat-footed fighter, I can beat himBy Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) says he initially was hesitant to take the fight with the much bigger WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs), but after sitting down and watching tape of some of his fights, he realized that Canelo is a flat-footed fighter that he believes he can beat.

Khan will be fighting Canelo on May 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Khan says he sees the fight as a 50-50 affair because of his hand speed and boxing ability. Khan believes he can out-box the bigger Canelo to earn a victory over him.
