Liam Smith wants Canelo Alvarez

smith73

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO light middleweight champion Liam Smith (22-0-1, 12 KOs) has his hopes up for him getting some big fights after he dispatches tonight’s opponent Predrag Radosevic (30-1, 11 KOs) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. Smith, 27, wants to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Miguel Cotto or fight a unification match against one of the Charlo brothers.

Whether Smith actually does fight any of those guys remains to be seen. We’ve not seen Smith fight any of the big names or even any real talented contenders in the division thus far during his eight-year pro career. Given Smith’s past track record for fights, you would have to be doubtful whether he’ll suddenly start fighting the bigger names and/or more talented fighters in the division all of a sudden at this point.

Cotto thinks Canelo was smart to vacate WBC title

Image: Cotto thinks Canelo was smart to vacate WBC title

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto is completely in favor of Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez giving up his WBC middleweight belt after being given pressure by the World Boxing Council to work under a deadline for his negotiations with his mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Cotto brings up how he refused to pay the WBC a sanctioning fee of $300,000 after he’d paid Golovkin $800,000 in a step aside fee so that he could fight Canelo rather than him last November. Cotto didn’t like the idea of having to pay the WBC too after he’d already given Golovkin 800K.

Liam Smith offered Canelo fight

liam smith

By Dan Ambrose: It looks like former WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) won’t be facing IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin after all. According to WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (22-0-1, 12 KOs), he’s been offered a fight with Canelo. Smith says Canelo would be challenging him for his WBO junior middleweight title at 154.

It’s unclear when the 27-year-old Smith and Canelo are supposed to be fighting. Smith has a title defense against #8 WBO Predrag Radosevic (30-1, 11 KOs) this Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

This will be the second straight voluntary defense for Smith. In theory, he’s supposed to be facing his #1 WBO mandatory challenger next, or the highest ranked contender that is willing to fight him.

Arum doubts Canelo will fight Golovkin in 2016

arum74

By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he doesn’t think former two division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez won’t bother fighting Gennady Golovkin in 2016. Arum thinks Canelo made a mistake in saying he would fight Golovkin at 160, and then changing his mind about it later and backing out. After Canelo defeated Amir Khan earlier this month on May 7, Canelo said he would fight Golovkin at 160.

Arum suspects Canelo won’t fight Golovkin before his own fighter WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (34-0, 24 KOs) gets a crack at the Kazahstan fighter. Arum wants to match Ramirez against Golovkin at the first available date in 2017. Arum plans on having Ramirez defend his WBO title twice in 2016 against other opponents.

Roach to speak with Pacquiao about Canelo fight

roach75

By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach still hasn’t given up on his star fighter Manny Pacquiao making a comeback in the near future for one last fight. Pacquiao has already said that he’s probably not going to come back to the sport to resume his career unless he misses it. What makes a comeback unlikely is Pacquiao being elected into the senate in the Philippines last May.

Pacquiao is now a senator in his home country, and he’s got huge responsibilities that go with this job. Roach wants to get Pacquiao to come back for a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Roach says the fight with Canelo was offered to him, and he want to see what Pacquiao thinks about it when they meet each face to face in the future.

Should Canelo return to 154 if he ducks Golovkin fight?

canelo48

Jeff Aranow: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez says he wants his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions to continue working on negotiations for a fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Canelo hasn’t officially ducked the hard hitting Kazakhstan fighter yet, but there’s a very good chance we could see that in the near future.

Canelo giving up his WBC middleweight title this month was the first hint that he might choose to avoid facing Triple G. The other hints were Canelo saying he’s still a 154lb fighter and that he won’t fight a middleweight at the full weight of 160lbs.

Mora: Golovkin will take a lot of years off Canelo

moraBy Gerardo Granados: Are we the Fight fans so naive or just plain stupid, to not to know, that professional boxing is a business too? In the last few days, I have read a couple of comments and articles defending Canelo Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar Dela Hoya decision to vacate the WBC middle title.

I don’t mean to disrespect pro wrestlers around the world, but pro wrestling is a quality show offered by many companies based on entertainment first and not on a real competition standard. Maybe in the US there is one major wrestling company, but there are many more regional wrestling promotional companies all over the United States and also around the World.

The main goal at pro wrestling is to offer to the viewers, an entertaining quality drama show, be it at the microphone or inside the ring. On times a wrestler might not be really skilled inside the ring, but if he does has an attractive personality and knows how to arouse the audience, then it is possible for him to gain many fans. Now, that doesn’t mean wrestlers aren’t real athletes, they also get hurt and on times tragedies occur.

Canelo-Golovkin: Wait or not to wait?

Image: Canelo-Golovkin: Wait or not to wait?

By Askhat Bapiev: It’s not smart to feed your vain hope and rely only on luck that one day you’re going to get what you wanted. I mean in all great boxing tales there is only one fight that absolutely can change the course of personal legend of any boxers and forever.

And we are talking about the fight which can make the world learn your name or forget you as a boxer at a such tender age.

Golovkin vs. Canelo needs to happen now

golovkin633

By Patrick McHugh: The general belief is that Golden Boy Promotions doesn’t want their cash cow Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) to face IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 Kos) right now because the 25-year-old Mexican Canelo is making too much money fighting sure thing opposition like Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto, James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo.

The thought is that Golden Boy will only give Canelo the green light to fight Golovkin once their golden goose has laid enough golden eggs to the point where it won’t matter as much if he takes the fight and loses badly to Golovkin. The fortunes will have already been made by then, so it won’t hurt as much to see Canelo get beaten. However, the boxing wants to see Golovkin and Canelo face each other right now rather than wait for the fight to take place years from now when Golovkin is old and harmless for Canelo.

Robert Garcia in favor of Canelo’s decision to vacate WBC title

Image: Robert Garcia in favor of Canelo’s decision to vacate WBC title

By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia is in favor of what Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez did recently in vacating his WBC middleweight title when he was pressured by the World Boxing Council with a deadline for negotiations with Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Garcia says Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy made a good business decision to vacate the WBC belt. Garcia thinks it doesn’t matter if the Canelo-Golovkin fight takes place this year because it’ll still be a big fight a year from now when the two fighters do face each other.
