Is Calzaghe’s Legacy Tarnished For The Fights He Didn’t Take?

cal45435By William Mackay: Through a career that spanned 16 years with three titles won in the super middleweight division, Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32) incredibly only has a small handful of opponents that I would consider to be good fighters. The vast majority of them fought in a nine year period when he held the WBO super middleweight title were mostly forgettable opponents, not the type that would stand out and garner attention.

Should Roy Jones Jr. Move Up To Cruiserweight?

jones43435352By William Mackay: Just looking at Roy Jones Jr’s recent fight against Joe Calzaghe in November, it’s pretty clear that Roy needs to move up to at least the cruiserweight division to give that a try rather than continuing to waste time campaigning as a light heavyweight. Although Jones, 40, is still one of the best fighters in the World as a light heavyweight, he doesn’t have the skills any longer in my estimation to compete against the top light heavyweights like Chad Dawson, Bernard Hopkins, Zsolt Erdei, Hugo Garay and Adrian Diaconu.

Calzaghe Thinks Jones Can Win Another Title

jones4366By Jim Dower: In an interview with The Sun, Joe Calzaghe gave 40-year-old Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38 KOs) a vote of confidence about his fading career, saying “Jones still has a lot left…I believe Jones has a bit of gas left in the tank and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him as a world champion again.” However, it’s hard to take serious what Calzaghe says, because Jones, with the exception of the 1st round in which he knocked Calzaghe down, looked poor throughout the 12-round fight, having difficulty in pulling the trigger with his punches, even with Calzaghe standing directly in front of him and daring him to throw punches.

Roy Jones Jr. vs. Omar Sheika On March 21st

jones34336By Dave Lahr: According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, light heavyweight Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38 KOs) is looking to fight former super middleweight contender on March 21st at the Pensacola Civic Center in Pensacola, Florida. The choice of Sheika, 32, as an opponent like a bizarre choice for Jones given that Sheika hasn’t fought for almost a year and half since defeating Tiwon Taylor in September 2007.

Roy Jones Jr. Turns 40 Today!

jones43564545By Jim Dower: Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38 KOs) turns 40 today, a ripe age for a fighter that many boxing fans thought would have retired a long time ago. Given his record in his last seven fights, three wins and four losses, perhaps Jones should have. However, what can you say to a person that loves the sport enough to stay on well past their prime, even when they don’t need the money?

What Does Calzaghe Have To Do To Surpass Jones & Hopkins?

calzaghe5573857By Scott Gilfoid: Okay, Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KOs) has somehow stayed unbeaten his entire career up until now, that’s something we all can agree on right off the bat. But what Calzaghe do to surpass boxing greats like Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr., if at all possible at this late stage in Calzaghe’s career. For me, I don’t that it’s possible now. The biggest problem for Calzaghe is that he has a large gap between 1993 and 1997 where he fought exclusively mediocre opponents.

Could Roy Jones Jr. Beat David Haye?

jones4343By Jason Kim: With the recent news that Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38 KOs) will be moving up to the heavyweight division if Joe Calzaghe doesn’t give him a rematch, it interesting to consider who Jones, 39, will decide on fighting if/when he does make his move back up to the heavyweight division. Jones will be turning 40 on January 16th, and doesn’t have a lot of time to waste in working his way up to a big fight like younger fighters. With his excellent talent, he probably doesn’t need to, either, because what can a big, crude, slower heavyweight teach Jones? probably not much, I’m afraid.

Roy Jones Legacy

Image: Roy Jones LegacyBy Alan Thomson: He dominated his sport like few others before him. For a decade he reigned as the best pound for pound fighter in boxing. And for the first fifteen years of his career, he rarely lost a round. But since turning 35 years old in 2004, life just hasn’t been the same for old Roy. He didn’t simply begin to slip down the other side of the hill. He fell into a precipice.
