Hearns Defeats Clavette, Is Duddy Next?

hearns56456.jpgBy Jim Dower: Undefeated light middleweight Ronald Hearns (21-0, 17 KOs) put himself in line for an early 2009 fight with undefeated middleweight John Duddy on Saturday night by stopping an overwhelmed Canadian Paul Clavette (14-2-1, 2 KOs) in the 6th round of a scheduled 10-round bout at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Hearns, 29, the son of former boxing champion Tommy “Hit Man” Hearns, knocked Clavette down in the 6th round with a hard combination. He got up and continued to sustain punishment from Hearns, who staggered him with a powerful combination leading to a standing eight count.

Following that, Hearns unloaded on him with a handful of more power right hands, causing referee Michael Griffin to step in and halt the fight at 2:37 of the 6th round with Clavette badly hurt, yet still on his feet. Hearns, not a big puncher in comparison to his famous father, still showed good enough power in volume to cause Clavette all kinds of problems.

Duddy To Fight Ronald Hearns

duddy32345.jpgBy Nate Anderson: Unbeaten Irish middleweight contender John Duddy (25-0, 17 KOs) is in the process of setting up a possible fight with undefeated light middleweight prospect Ronald Hearns (20-0, 16 KOs) for a bout that would take place in January at the Madison Square Garden in New York. However, the fight is contingent on Duddy winning his next fight in November against a still unknown opponent, and Hearns winning his next two fights. Prior to this, Duddy was working on fighting IBF light welterweight champion Verno Phillips. That fight, however, reportedly fell through for lack of interest from the cable networks.

Duddy, 29, is currently ranked high in the middleweight division, coming in at number #2 in the WBO, #5 in the WBC and #9 in the IBF. Even though Duddy is almost assured of getting a title shot against one of the middleweight champions in the near future, probably Kelly Pavlik, he has moved down to the light welterweight division where his new trainer feels that Duddy would stand a better chance at competing with the smaller fighters. At 5’11”, Duddy is a medium sized middleweight, with good but not great power for his size. The problem with him, however, is that he doesn’t have really explosive power that would be needed to compete with the likes of Pavlik or Arthur Abraham.

Hearns Stops Gonzalez

hearns5644.jpgBy Jim Dower: After watching #12th ranked WBA/WBC light middleweight contender Ronald Hearns (19-0, 15 KOs) struggle in defeating Jose Luis Gonzalez (12-4-1, 10 KOs) on Friday night at the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, in Georgetown, Cayman Islands, I’m frankly shocked at how Hearns can be ranked so highly. To be sure, he got the knockout win, a 7th round TKO, which is a good thing, yet he looked completely average, lacking any kind of power or any semblance of defensive boxing skills either for that matter. Given his lack of bouts, this was only his 19th right, I just don’t see how he can be ranked as high as he is.

Perhaps I’m missing something, I guess, but I didn’t see any real ability from Hearns the other night, nothing like his famous father Tommy Hearns nor anything like what one would expect from a 12th rated light middleweight. Whatever the case, Hearns had what people refer to as soft opponent on Friday night, someone for Hearns to look good in the process of winning. That was mostly true, since he did look good at times against Gonzalez, but he also looked plain awful at other times as he got tagged far too much for me.

Hearns, 29, the son of famous boxing champion Tommy Hearns, knocked Astorga, 29, down twice in the fight, the 2nd time coming in the 8th round, leading to referee Jay Nady to stop the fight at 1:10 of the round.
