BOXING AT ITS BEST

The Boxing Writers Association of America held its annual awards dinner, and it was so nice to see the boxing community together, so humbling to hear the speeches that brought tears to many and, for once, to see promoters, managers, boxers, television executives, trainers, and anyone involved in the sport interact with the major players of the boxing media in the United States. Congratulations to the BWAA for a successful event which was clearly prepared with passion and dedication to honor the best of 2016.

By Gerardo Granados: In a fight of the year performance of Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and contender Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, the fight judges decided to give the win to the challenger in a heinous robbery of the year nominee. The official score cards were 113-113 and 114-112 twice for Rungvisai, I scored it 115-111 for Chocolatito

By Paul “Paparazzi” Jones: Rarely are boxing fans treated to a fight of the year and upset of the year candidate with a controversial ending on the same night, let alone in the same fight. This kind of ‘March Madness’ is often reserved for upsets by a Cinderella team who runs deep into the NCAA basketball tournament. However, a controversial upset is exactly what fans witnessed when Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (42-4-1, 38 KOs) claimed the WBC super flyweight championship by outpointing previously unbeaten, #1 pound-for-pound fighter Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez (46-1, 38 KOs) on Saturday night.

Roman Gonzalez: I want a rematch with Rungvisai

Image: Roman Gonzalez: I want a rematch with Rungvisai

By Dan Ambrose: Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez saw his star dimmed last Saturday night in a bloody and grueling 12 round majority decision defeat at the hands of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai at Madison Square Garden in New York. Gonzalez dealt with a large cut over his right eye from round 3, and the leaking blood certainly didn’t help Gonzalez’s efforts to try and turn back the threat from the fighter from Thailand. Gonzalez (46-1, 38 KOs) wants a rematch with Rungvisai (42-4-1, 38 KOs) as soon as possible.

By Dan Ambrose: By electing not to be weighed for the IBFs mandated weight check this morning, Danny Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) has tipped his hands in his game plan for tonight’s fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) on HBO pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden in New York. Jacobs said last Friday, “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to win. I’ve been dreaming of this since I put in the gloves at 15.”

Golovkin vs. Jacobs: Will it go the distance?

Image: Golovkin vs. Jacobs: Will it go the distance?

By Gerardo Granados: This Saturday at the Madison Square Garden, New York, a solid boxing card awaits for all proud fight fans for the Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs card. In the undercard there’s former WBC super flyweight champion Carlos Cuadras facing David Carmona. “El Principe” Cuadras should do an easy job and look impressive defeating Carmona. We also have pound for pound King, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez making his first defense of his WBC super flyweight title, against mandatory challenger experienced former WBC super flyweight champion Wisaksil Wangek. Against Cuadras, Chocolatito had to dig deep to earn the decision and on his first defense attempt of his title, we could see if moving up to his fourth division has really affected his punching power.

Golovkin vs. Jacobs: Daniel says he’ll do whatever it takes to win

By Allan Fox: Gennady Golovkin rates Daniel Jacobs as his most dangerous opponent of his entire 10-year pro career, but the boxing fans overwhelmingly see this as just another knockout for Triple G. It’s a bigger opponent for Golovkin than the guys that he’s been facing lately, but it’s still someone that he has a very good chance of knocking out when the two of them fight on Saturday on HBO pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden in New York.
