Billy Joe Saunders: I believe I can beat Peter Quillin

saunders5533By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO 160lb contender Billy Joe Saunders agreed to step aside in order to let American talent Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) challenge WBO middleweight belt holder Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) for his WBO strap on April 11th. Saunders is said to have gotten a six-figure payment to step aside so that the 31-year-old Quillin could challenge for Lee’s title belt.

Saunders sees the move as potentially setting up a fight between him and Lee later on this year with Lee’s WBO belt being up for grabs in the fight.

The Al Haymon factor

By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: For a man that is rarely seen, he sure has a great impact on boxing. Thanks in part to Main Events Kathy Duva, who struck a deal with NBC to bring boxing back to regular TV and attract the casual fan. Haymon will attempt to pick up where she left off. He’s off to great start with his series Premier Boxing Champion series set up on NBC and his deal with Spike TV.

Andy Lee vs. Peter Quillin for the WBO 160lb title, Saunders to step aside

lee91By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO 160lb champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) will be facing WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) for his WBO title, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. #1 WBO contender Billy Joe Saunders has stepped aside in order to let the Quillin-Lee fight to go ahead.

Some boxing fans might be upset to learn that the 31-year-old Quillin is getting immediate title shot at the WBO belt after he recently vacated his WBO title when he was in the position where he had to defend it against his then #1 WBO contender Matt Karobov.

Andy Lee vs. Peter Quillin possible for April 11th on Garcia-Peterson card

lee2By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) could be making his first defense against a very tough customer in Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) on April 11th on the undercard of the Danny Garcia – Lamont Peterson catch-weight fight in New York, according to Dan Rafael.

Lee, 30, will need to get an exception by the World Boxing Organization to bypass his #1 WBO mandatory challenger Billy Joe Saunders, who Lee was supposed to be fighting in his first title defense. However, the green stuff is supposed to be better for the Quillin fight than the Saunders fight, so it’s possible we could be seeing that bout take place first.

Quillin throws his toys out then gets them back?

quillin653By Gav Duthie: Despite giving up his title in only September last year the WBO seems happy to let Peter Quillin 31-0 (22) fight for the crown again as rumors are rife that he is an advanced negotiations with new champion Andy Lee 34-2 (24). The two are expected to meet on April 11 alongside Danny Garcia versus Lamont Peterson. The winner is then expected to fight mandatory challenger Billy Joe Saunders 21-0 (11).

Giving up the title

The last high profile title vacation I can remember before Quillin’s was when Riddock Bowe literally threw his WBC title in the bin rather than face Lennox Lewis. Bowe has since said that he was happy to fight Lewis but was advised (badly) not to take the fight.

Quillin: Golovkin is a high risk low reward opponent

quillin53By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) pretty much ruled out a fight against WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at least for now.

Quillin says that Golovkin is a high risk fight without much of a reward at this time. Quillin says if he were to fight him he’d be doing it for the fans, and he feels like it’s not worth it to fight him just so that he can tell the fans he beat him.

It’s interesting that Quillin doesn’t think of the Golovkin fight in terms of what it would do for his career. Quillin doesn’t seem to understand that if he beat Golovkin, it would help make a bigger star and that in turn would lead to him making more money.

Quillin to fight in February or March

quillin653By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) says he’ll be back in the ring in February or March of 2015 against an opponent still to be determined.

Quillin, 31 recently vacated his World Boxing Organization 160 pound title rather than face Matt Karobov in what would have been a good payday rumored to be $1.4 million. Instead of Quillin getting that fight, he’s sat idle for the past eight months without fighting.

Jermain Taylor will struggle against Quillin or Jacobs

taylor775By Allan Fox: Newly crowned IBF middleweight champion Jermain Taylor wasn’t ready to say whether he’ll be facing his IBF mandatory challenger Hassan N’Dam last night following Taylor’s 12 round unanimous decision win over IBF champion Sam Soliman.

Instead of answering the question by ESPN about who he’ll be fighting next, Taylor said that he’ll fight whoever his adviser Al Haymon wants him to. With that said, it’s quite possible that Haymon will look to match Taylor instead against former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin or WBA champion Daniel Jacobs next instead of having him face N’Dam.

Quillin: Golovkin vacated his WBA title, Jacobs has the WBA belt

quillin52By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin is claiming that the reason why the World Boxing Association made Gennady Golovkin the WBA Super World champion was because Golovkin failed to fight Jarrod Fletcher.

Quillin seems to have his mind made up that Daniel Jacobs is the main WBA middleweight champion and Golovkin was made the WBA Supper World champ only because he didn’t fight Fletcher.

The WBA elevated Golovkin to Super World champion last June. The previous WBA Super Champion Daniel Geale was stripped of that status by the WBA in October of 2012 after he failed to fight Golovkin, who was the WBA regular middleweight champion at the time. Geale wanted to fight Anthony Mundine rather than face Golovkin. But for some reason the WBA didn’t give Golovkin the Super World WBA status until June of 2014.
