Quillin will likely face Jacobs in fall, says De La Hoya

quillin3By Dan Ambrose: Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) unexpectedly vacated his WBO middleweight title on Thursday after he’d earlier been given two extensions by the World Boxing Organization to sign for his November 1st title defense against mandatory challenger Matt Korobov.

A lot of boxing fans believe that Quillin and his adviser Al Haymon chose to relinquish the title due to the danger that Korobov presented to him. But Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says that Quillin has his sights set on fighting WBA 160 pound champion Daniel Jacobs (28-1, 25 KOs) next fall at a still to be determined date and venue.

Quillin vacates WBO 160lb title – Breaking news!

quillin33 (2)By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has sent out a press release saying that WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) will be vacating his WBO 160 pound title rather than taking on his dangerous IBF mandatory challenger Matt Korobov.

The move was kind of expected because Quillin had failed to sign his part of the contract for his title defense against Korokov, and Quillin had asked for two extensions to have time to sign the contract.

Quillin still hasn’t signed contract for Korobov fight

quillin653By Dan Ambrose: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) still hasn’t signed his portion of the contract for a November 1st title defense against his #1 WBO challenger Matt Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs), according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Korobov signed his portion of the contract last week, and they’ve been waiting ever since for Quillin to sign his side.

Quillin’s wife just had a baby, and he’s been given an extension until this Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET. If Quillin fails to sign the contract to fight his mandatory challenger, then he’ll likely be stripped of his title by the World Boxing Organization.

De La Hoya: Quillin would do a number on Golovkin

golovkin303By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says he likes the idea of matching his fighter WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) up against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs), and he likes the 31-year-old Quillin’s chances of beating Golovkin if that fight takes place.

De La Hoya said “Would love to see @KIDCHOCOLATE [Quillin] vs. GGG. My Latino brother [Quillin] would do a number on the G man.”

Korobov-Quillin fight ordered by WBO

korobov5By Dan Ambrose: #3 WBO Matt Korobov’s 10 round unanimous decision win over Jose Uzcategui last Saturday night earned the 31-year-old Russian fighter a title shot against WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KO’s)

On Thursday the WBO ordered Quillin and Korobov’s management to begin negotiations with 30 days to get the fight negotiated or else it’ll go to a purse bid.

This is a fight presents both fighters with a huge step up in class. Quillin has had things pretty easy during his career with him facing mostly weaker opposition. His big wins have come against Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam, Jesse Brinkley, and Gabriel Rosado. He didn’t look great in any of those fights, including in his last fight against Lukas Konecny. .

Billy Joe Saunders wants Peter Quillin fight

saunders3By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten middleweight contender Billy Joe Saunders (19-0, 10 KO’s) is hoping he can line himself up for a world title shot against WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin if Saunders can get past little known Emanuele Blandemura (22-0, 5 KO’s) in their fight on July 26th for the vacant European middleweight title at the Phones4U Arena in Manchester, UK.

Saunders doesn’t have much in the way of punching power, and it’s hard to imagine him doing any better than Quillin’s last opponent Lukas Konecny. In fact, I think Konecny is a far better fighter than Saunders with better power, more experience and better skills.

Quillin wants Golovkin fight

golovkin2By Dan Ambrose: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KO’s) says he’d like nothing better than to face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) in a unification fight as soon as possible. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s waiting for an offer from Golovkin’s promoters at K2 Promotions. However, the one thing that could prevent the fight from ever taking place is the network obstacles. Quillin fights for Showtime, while Golovin fights on HBO. Getting one of them to allow their fighters to fight on their rival network may prove all but impossible.

“I’m right here, Let’s stop talking about it. Let’s f**** do it,” Quillin said. “Golovkin is supposed to be this big bad wolf. But the opponents that they get for him are not too much better than the guys that I am fighting. I’ll fight him. He’s a monster? I’ve never been scared of any monsters.”

Quillin: I’ll fight Daniel Jacobs if the price is right

quillin653By Dan Ambrose: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KO’s) says he’d be interested in facing once beaten #3 WBC, #5 IBF, #5 WBO, #6 WBA Daniel Jacobs (27-1, 24 KO’s) for the right about of money. If Quillin doesn’t get the right price, he’ll face whoever his manager Al Haymon picks out for him. Quillin hasn’t had a good opponent yet in his three title defenses, and it would be an upgrade if Jacobs were to be Quillin’s next opponent, even though Jacobs was already exposed in a loss to Dmitry Pirog.

“I just take ’em as they come along,” Quillin said. “At one point I thought I was fighting Danny Jacobs in my last fight. If that’s the only big fight out there for me, we’ll fight as long as the price is right.”
