Williams Wants Cintron To Take The Challenge

In today’s boxing news, unbeaten superstar World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Paul Williams (33-0, 24 KOs) badly wants his counterpart, International Boxing Federation welterweight Kermit Cintron to take him on as previously planned for their February 2nd bout. However, the bout hasn’t been confirmed as of yet because the contractors haven’t been signed. Apparen’t, Williams is under the impression that Cintron isn’t in a rush to fight him because of the fact that Williams already defeated Antonio Margarito by unanimous decision in July 2007, a fighter who demolished Cintron in five brutal rounds in 2005.

Margarito knocked Cintron down three times and by the time the fight was stopped, it looked almost like a comedy because Cintron was so badly outclassed. If last Saturday’s bout is any kind of harboring for the future, Cintron looked awful against a clud fighter by the name of Jesse Feliciano, who fought pretty much even with Cintron the entire fight until being stopped in the 10th round. The stoppage, however, seemed a bit premature as Feliciano looked fine and was still punching back.

According to the Aiken Standard, Willaims said “I respect him Cintron. He’s a champion, a big puncher, but I’ve been in the ring with a lot of big punchers. I’ll look out for his right hand, and make the fight my fight.”

As things stand, Williams, 26, is prepared to take on another opponent on February 2nd, should Cintron’s right hand not be ready by then. However, I’m thinking that even if it is, Cintron will likely opt to defend his title against one of the less threatening opponents in the IBF, such as Roberto Garcia. Cintron certainly won’t risk his title again by facing Margarito. However, sooner or later, he’ll be forced to fight him becauae Margarito is steadily moving up and will soon by Cintron’s mandatory, should he hold onto the title for that long.
