De La Hoya says Canelo-Golovkin fight could take place in the fall

CaneloPrepares4Khan_Hoganphotos10By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is saying that a fight between his guy Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and unbeaten Gennady “GGG” Golovkin could take place this fall depending on what happens on Canelo’s next fight on May 7 against Amir Khan. De La Hoya says he’ll meet with Canelo the next day on May 8 and the decision will be made about which direction the 25-year-old Mexican star will go in. De La Hoya says the fight will take place soon.

I think it’s obviously important for Canelo to take the fight against Golovkin soon, because there’s too much risk of the fight imploding if Canelo loses another fight. Canelo isn’t one of thoe guys that has a ton of talent to where he can be counted on to win by a slam dunk each time he fights. We saw how Canelo almost lost to Erislandy Lara and Austin Trout. Many boxing fans thought Canelo did lose those fights.

De La Hoya: Canelo-Khan winner will be #1 fighter in boxing

delahoya83By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s excitable promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions believes that the upcoming fight between Canelo and Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on May 7 will determine who the Number 1 fighter will be in the sport of boxing.

De La Hoya already sees the 25-year-old Canelo as the top fighter in the sport, but he now thinks Khan has the chance to take the number one position from the Mexican super star if he beats them in their fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s extremely doubtful that Khan will be seen as the number one fighter in the sport even if he knocks Canelo out in the first minute of the 1st round on May 7.

Khan doesn’t have the huge built in fan base that Canelo has in the United States, and there will continue to be doubts about Khan until he faces arguably better fighters than Canelo like Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs at 160.

Arum: Pacquiao would beat Canelo like he did Oscar

arum83By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum still believes a match can be made between his fighter Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) and WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) if Pacquiao gets past Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) in their fight this Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view, and if Pacquiao chooses to continue his career.

Arum isn’t sure whether Pacquiao would decide on fighting Canelo or if he would elect to fight the lighter WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford in a fight at 140. Arum says he would back Pacquiao in whatever fighter he chooses he wants to fight.

De La Hoya: Lemieux-Tapia winner could face Canelo

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya revealed earlier today that the winner of the May 7th fight between former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) and junior middleweight Glen Tapia (23-2, 15 KOs) could be in line to face WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in the future at some point. It would be an impossible situation for Lemieux to fight Canelo in his special weight class of 155lbs. Lemieux couldn’t even make the recent catch-weight of 163lbs for his last fight. How is he going to melt down to Canelo’s 155lb weight division?

Judging by how things went for Lemieux in his recent fight against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, you would have to think that the fight will be taking place soon. Golden Boy can’t afford to wait too long before they match Lemieux with Canelo.

Sanchez doubts De La Hoya wants Canelo-Golovkin fight

delahoya433By Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez believes that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is already coming up with excuses to get his fighter WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez out of the fight with Golovkin later this year.

De La Hoya recently told the media that the negotiations between Golovkin and Canelo will be very difficult. Sanchez doesn’t understand why De La Hoya would say this other than him priming the media to get them ready for him and Canelo to pull out of the negotiations and go in a different direction.

De La Hoya: Canelo can’t go up in weight too much for Khan fight

delahoya84By Dan Ambrose: If Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya gets his way, his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez won’t rehydrate too high for his fight against Amir Khan on May 7 on HBO PPV. De La Hoya thinks it’s a bad idea for Canelo to put on a lot of weight for this fight because he thinks it could lead to him slowing down and not having the speed that he’s going to need to follow the speedy quick Khan around the ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo said this week that he could rehydrate as high as 190 for the fight. He sees it as his own business if he chooses to do that.

Canelo has been known to rehydrate as high as 175lbs after making weight for his catch-weight fights at 155lbs. However, in Canelo’s last fight against Miguel Cotto last November, Canelo appeared to be at an all-time high in weight. For this particular fight, Canelo was not weighed before he stepped inside the ring by HBO for some reason.

De La Hoya: Golovkin is not a star like Canelo

delahoya433By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says the fight between his fighter WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will eventually take place “sooner rather than later,” but he sees the negotiations between the two fighters troublesome.

The reason for that is because he feels that Canelo is a true superstar right now and Golovkin is someone who merely thinks he’s a superstar. De La Hoya thinks Golovkin’s mistaken belief about himself being a superstar will make the negotiations difficult between them. De La Hoya does believe that Golovkin might eventually become a superstar one of these days, but for right now, he’s not there yet.

De La Hoya: Khan was avoided by Mayweather and Pacquiao

de la hoya93By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya, the promoter for WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao both avoided Amir Khan by not giving him a fight. As far as the big names go, it was only Canelo that chose to face Khan and not the other two stars. Canelo will be facing Khan on May 7 on HBO PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather and Pacquiao would probably disagree with De La Hoya about them having avoided Khan. They would probably say that a fight with Khan didn’t make sense in terms of dollars and sense because they had bigger names to fight. Mayweather used up his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS fighting Robert Guerrero, Marcos Maidana, Canelo, Pacquiao and Andre Berto. Pacquiao’s last two fights of his career have been against Mayweather and he’ll be fighting next month against Tim Bradley.

De La Hoya believes that Khan will be entering the ring knowing that he’ll defeat Canelo. Khan does feel confident that he’ll beat Canelo after watching some of his recent fights and not being wowed by what he saw from Canelo.

De La Hoya thinks Khan can win if Canelo loses focus

1-CaneloKhanNYPC_Hoganphotos6By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is talking up Amir Khan’s chances if his golden goose WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fails to stay focused for 12 rounds.

De La Hoya believes that Khan could take control of the fight and win in the same way that Manny Pacquiao was able to beat him many years ago in 2008 in their PPV fight. De La Hoya came into the fight weight drained from having dropped to 147, and Pacquiao took advantage of the situation by giving him a battering until the fight was halted in the 8th.

De La Hoya: Canelo has a tough fight because of Khan’s speed

delahoya5By Jeff Aranow: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya thinks his fighter WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) could be in for a tough fight against challenger Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on May 7.

De La Hoya is specifically worried about Khan’s hand speed giving Canelo issues because he’s had problems in the past when facing guys with fast hands and good foot movement. Canelo lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, and he also lost to Erislandy Lara in the minds of many fans.

Some fans also think that Canelo deserved no better than a draw in his fight against Austin Trout. If you take what the fans say as gospel, then Canelo’s record is really 45-2-2, 32. That’s not a bad record, but it’s definitely not as good as the record listed for him.
