Not impressed with Donaire’s victory over Sidorenko

By Chris Williams: Unlike a lot of fans of Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s), I’m not about to crown him as the number #1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world after his 4th round stoppage win over the made to order Wladimir Sidorenko (22-3-2, 7 KO’s) last Saturday night. Donaire looked like Wladimir Klitschko standing next to the shorter Sidorenko, and the size advantage that Donaire had in this alone was more than enough for him to get the win. But it was the perfect opponent for Donaire to looked against.

Donaire looked huge compared to Sidorenko

By Chris Williams: In looking at Nonito Donaire’s win over Wladimir Sidorenko last Saturday night, I couldn’t help notice how much bigger Donaire was compared to Sidorenko. Donaire looked to be at least 15 pounds heavier than Sidorenko, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it were even more than that. Donaire already had the two inch height advantage over the 5’4″ Sidorenko, but Donaire looked heavier all around than the Ukrainian. I’m noticing that Donaire is often a lot bigger than the guys that he’s been facing. The smallish Sidorenko never had a chance and was run over by Donaire in four rounds and ended up with a broken nose for his trouble.

Donaire beats Sidorenko, but he won’t be able to take Montiel’s power

Image: Donaire beats Sidorenko, but he won't be able to take Montiel's powerBy Dave Lahr: I hope Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s) savors his little victory over Wladimir Sidorenko (22-3-2, 7 KO’s) for as long as he can because on February 19th 2011, it’s going to end badly for Donaire when he takes on the hardest puncher in the bantamweight division in WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KO’s). Donaire didn’t have to worry about the kind of power that Montiel has last Saturday when he took on Sidorenko at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. Donaire’s fans are crowing about this victory as if Donaire has just fought a great fighter instead of realizing who Donaire had been matched against. This was the perfect opponent for Donaire to beat and look good against, and nothing more than that.

Donaire stops Sidorenko

Image: Donaire stops SidorenkoBy Chris Williams: You have to hand it to Top Rank for their perfect match-making for their fighter Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s) last Saturday night. Instead of putting him in with a dangerous puncher, they picked out the weak punching former WBA bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko (22-3-2, 7 KO’s) for Donaire to fight, and the results were impressive for Donaire.

Donaire vs. Sidorenko tonight: Will Nonito fail this test?

Image: Donaire vs. Sidorenko tonight: Will Nonito fail this test?By Chris Williams: Former IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KO’s) moves up in weight to take on Ukrainian Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2-2, 7 KO’s) tonight at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. This fight is supposed to set up Donaire for a much bigger fight against WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel next year on February 19th. However, Donaire looked terrible recently in his fight with Rafael Concepcion and it’s not beyond the realm of possibilities that Donaire could lose to tonight against the weak punching Sidorenko.

Donaire-Sidorenko & Soto-Antillon: Is this card worth purchasing?

Image: Donaire-Sidorenko & Soto-Antillon: Is this card worth purchasing?By Chris Williams: With Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. pulling out of this Saturday’s fight card, it means that Nonito Donaire’s fight against former WBA bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2-2, 7 KO’s) will be pushed up to the main event for the fight. That seems like a nice little mismatch to me. The other halfway decent fight on the card is WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto (53-7-2, 32 KO’s) fighting lightweight contender Urbano Antillon (28-1, 20 KO’s).

Arum says the Donaire-Montiel fight can still go ahead for February 19th

By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum doesn’t see any reason why the February 19th bout between WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KO’s) and former International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KO’s) can’t go ahead anyway despite the huge gash in Montiel’s right leg from a motorcycle accident a week ago. Montiel, 31, was at a motorcycle event in Alamos, Sonora, Mexico.

Donaire misses out on the Showtime’s bantamweight tourney to fight Sidorenko

By Jim Dower: Super flyweight Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KO’s) is missing out on Showtime’s bantamweight tournament due to the money not being right and because Donaire’s promoter didn’t like the format, according to boxing news from the Los Angeles Times. Instead of fighting in the bantamweight tourney and getting a lot of visibility and positive press if he were to win the tourney, Donaire instead will be facing a struggling Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2-2, 7 KO’s) on December 4th at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. If Donaire is successful in beating Sidorenko, Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum wants to put him in with Fernando Montiel next year on February 19th.

By Jim Dower: A bout between WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KO’s) and Nonito Donaire will be taking place in early 2011, according to Michael Marley at Examiner.com.
