Mikey Garcia explains how he’d fight Pacquiao

mikey44By Chris Williams: Last night, WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) fought for what will likely be the last time at 130 in beating Juan Carlos Burgos (34-2-2, 20 KO’s) by 12 round unanimous decision at MSG, in New York. With that victory, Mikey could be one fight away from a big money mega-fight against Manny Pacquiao in September of 2014.

Mikey will likely be back in the ring in the Summer in a fight at lightweight against possibly Yuiorkis Gamboa, if he doesn’t price himself out of the fight by asking for more than what Top Rank is willing to pay him to be the B side.

Last night when asked by HBO how he’d fight Pacquiao, Mikey said “I find my distance, find my range, timing. Timing beats speed and I have all those skills and when I fight someone like them, I’ll prepare for them.”

Gamboa: They were booing at the Garden and I wasn’t the one being booed

By Dan Ambrose: WBA interim lightweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa was at hand last night to witness WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia’s poor performance in putting the Madison Square Garden fans asleep with his dull 12 round unanimous decision victory over challenger Juan Carlos Burgos (34-2-2, 20 KO’s) in New York.

Gamboa said on his social media site “There is booing in the garden and they not booing me. I am here so they going to have to bring the Marines. I am stepping into that ring. Just so you know, I want to go up. They don’t let me. I think I am going to fight Burgos instead.”

Mikey Garcia willing to negotiate fight with Yuriorkis Gamboa

mikey55By Chris Williams: Getting booed from start to finish, WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) did what he had to do for him to beat Juan Carlos Burgos (30-2-2, 20 KO’s) tonight by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Madison Square Garden Theater, in New York, New York, USA. There weren’t any knockdowns in the fight, but Mikey almost went down in the 2nd round when he was hit by a left hook that he never saw coming from Burgos.

Like always, Mikey showed good power with both hands, and he probably would have scored a stoppage if he had pushed hard for it in the 2nd half of the fight. But Mikey looked like he didn’t want to take any chances of getting caught with something while going for the knockout.

Garcia beats Burgos; Jennings stops Szpilka

mikey5656By Dan Ambrose: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) defeated #1 WBO challenger Juan Carlos Burgos (30-2-2, 20 KO’s) by a boring 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden Theater, in New York, New York, USA. The final judges scores were 118-110, 118-110, 119-109. Mikey was booed in many of the rounds for his timid way of fighting, and it was sad to see him failing to impress the crowd.

It’s going to be interesting to see what the executives at HBO say about putting Mikey’s fights on their network in the future. If they feel that Guillermo Rigondeaux has a non-crowd pleasing style, then you have to wonder what they feel about Mikey after tonight. I think Rigondeaux is a lot more entertaining to watch than what we saw from Mikey in this fight.

Mikey Garcia looks thin and small at weigh-in for Burgos fight

garcia8888(Photo credit: Carlos Baeza/Thompson Boxing) By Dan Ambrose: In looking at how thin and small-boned WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) appeared at the weigh-in on Friday for his fight on Saturday night against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO’s), Top Rank promoter Bob Arum needs to re-think the idea of having Mikey move up to the 140 lb. division to face Manny Pacquiao or any of the top guys in that weight class.

Mikey doesn’t have the build to fight Pacquiao, and I don’t see him being able to move up in weight successfully by September or any time.

Arum: Mikey Garcia will soon be #1 pound-for-pound fighter in boxing

garcia4By Dan Ambrose: As most hardcore boxing fans know, Bob Arum of Top Rank is openly grooming WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) to be an opponent for Manny Pacquiao in either September of 2014 or sometime in 2015, if Pacquiao re-signs with Top Rank. Arum believes that Mikey is heading towards super star status in the future. Arum believes this because of how easily Mikey has been defeating his featherweight and super featherweight competition.

“I believe that he is a top 10 pound-for-pound fighter right now, and soon he will be universally accepted as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing,” Arum said via ESPN.

Mikey Garcia: I’d fight Pacquiao at 135-140 if it’s offered to me

garcia2By Chris Williams: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) is ready to move up in weight and face Manny Pacquiao as soon as he takes care of his opponent Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden Theater, in New York, New York, USA. Mikey is hoping that Pacquiao will be willing to fight him at 135 or 140. If not, Mikey’s probably in big trouble because he’s much too skinny to put on weight quick enough to face Pacquiao in September, which seems to be the month that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is thinking of matching them up.

If the fight is offered to Mikey for September, he’ll have to take it because there’s a chance that Pacquiao might not re-sign with Top Rank when his contract with them expires at the end of the year. Once Pacquiao is gone from Top Rank, I doubt he’ll bother doing Arum a favor and fighting Mikey in 2015 or 2016. Pacquiao won’t need to, because he’ll be off to bigger and better things and his days of fighting lightweights with Top Rank will likely be done.

Mikey Garcia must impress against Burgos on Saturday to keep moving forward

garcia515By Chris Williams: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) will be defending his title on Saturday night against #1 WBO Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO’s) in what shapes of to be a mismatch at the Madison Square Garden Theater, in New York, New York, USA. It’s definitely not a good sign that Burgos has fought to two straight 12 round draws in his last couple of fights, and with one of the draws coming against Roman Martinez.

Roman’s the guy that Mikey just destroyed in 8 rounds last November. HBO agreed to show the Mikey vs. Burgos fight knowing that Burgos hasn’t won a fight since 2012, and that’s more than a little disappointing for the boxing fans that’ll be watching it thinking it’ll be a competitive fight. Having Mikey fight an over-matched opponent is one thing, but then sticking it in the main event on HBO is really disappointing.

Robert Garcia: Gamboa will never get a shot at Mikey or Rios

gamboa545By Chris Williams: Trainer Robert Garcia has ruled out Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-0, 16 KO’s) getting a shot at WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia and Brandon Rios. Robert says he doesn’t want to let Gamboa fight Mikey or Rios because of Gamboa walking away from a fight with Rios two years ago, leaving him in the situation where he had to fight the tough Cuban Richard Abril.

Gamboa walked away form the fight because he felt that he didn’t get the money that he felt he should have been getting. Robert doesn’t care about why Gamboa walked away from the fight. All Robert cares about is that he left Rios standing there without the fight. I don’t buy what Robert is saying as the real reason why he doesn’t want to let Gamboa fight Mikey and Rios. I get the feeling Robert is afraid that Gamboa will beat both of them, and clean out Robert’s Oxnard, California stable in the process.
