Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Carlos Burgos next Saturday

garcia55By Dan Ambrose: Next Saturday night WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) will be making his first and likely his last title defense against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden in New York. The idea here is for Mikey to move up to lightweight and get in a fight or two and then move to light welterweight in September to possibly get a fight with Manny Pacquiao if it looks like he’ll be leaving Top Rank’s stable at the end of the year.

Mikey’s has said he’d like to unify titles at super featherweight and lightweight, but clearly if he bothers to do this then he could be closing the door on him getting a shot against Pacquiao if he chooses to leave Top Rank. Mikey has to move quickly to move up to 140 just in case Pacquiao decides he won’t re-sign with Top Rank.

Arum talks matching Mikey Garcia against Pacquiao and Lomachenko

mikey8By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is talking about having Mikey Garcia (33-0 28 KO’s) face either Manny Pacquiao or super featherweight contender Vasyl Lomachenko in the near future. Arum’s not saying when he wants to match Garcia up with Pacquiao, but one gets the sense that he could surprise us by either making the fight by the end of the year or in early 2015.

It’s probably a good idea for Arum to match Mikey up with Pacquiao sooner rather than later, because it’s possible that the Filipino star might not re-sign with Arum when his contract expires at the end of the year.

Arum could find himself in the position where he missed his window of opportunity to match Mikey up with Pacquiao if he doesn’t make the fight happen before his contract expires. Perhaps that’s why Arum is suddenly walking more and more about putting Mikey in with Pacquiao.

Burgos expects to take Mikey Garcia’s WBO strap on Jan. 25th

ORANGE, Calif. (Jan. 15, 2014) – In what might be his toughest challenge to date, super featherweight Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KOs) aims to capture his first world title against undefeated and current WBO champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KOs) on Saturday, Jan. 25, from The Theater at Madison Square Garden televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark (9:45 p.m. ET/PT).

“It’s go time for me,” Burgos said. “I had two, tough draws in 2013 that I felt I deservedly won and in order for me to put those experiences behind me, I have to take that title away from Mikey.”

Arum wants to match Pacquiao against Mikey Garcia

garcia54By Chris Williams: From the way Bob Arum of Top Rank is talking he doesn’t sound like a promoter who believes that Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) will leave Top Rank when his contract with them expires this year. In fact, Arum is talking about eventually matching WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) up with Pacquiao when Mikey grows into the light welterweight division.

I’m not sure how long we’re talking about for Mikey to move up to the 140 lb. division, but I would assume that Arum is talking about at least 2-3 years. This means that Arum likely figures that Pacquiao will re-sign with Top Rank and stay for a considerable amount of time.

Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Carlos Burgos on HBO on Jan. 25th at MSG

garcia56By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has set up a fight between WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) and Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO’s) in a fight televised by HBO on January 25th at Madison Square Garden. Arum wasn’t interested in matching Mikey against Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa, which would seem to have been a much better fight than this mismatch. Burgos is a fighter that has held to draws in his last two fights against Roman Martinez and Yakubu Amidu.

Arum said to RingTV “That [Garcia-Burgos] is done for Madison Square Garden. The contracts have been sent out today.”

Mikey Garcia: I need to get bigger before I face Pacquiao

garcia54By Chris Williams: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) wants to put on a little more weight before he faces Manny Pacquiao for a fight that he believes he’s capable of winning. Garcia said last Saturday night that he believes he can KO Pacquiao, and he’s very confident about his chances of making that happen. Mikey saw his friend Brandon Rios lose to Pacquiao, and he feels that wouldn’t happen to him if given the chance to fight the 34-year-old Pacquiao.

Mikey said to Ellie Sechbach “I’ve got to get a little bigger first, move to 140, and catch him somewhere around there. But why not?”

Mikey’s promoter Bob Arum is probably not going to let him fight Pacquiao because it might end badly for him.

Roach: Pacquiao would fight Mikey Garcia

pac621By Dan Ambrose: With the news that WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) is interested in facing Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s), trainer Freddie Roach says that he’d gladly take that match-up between Pacquiao and Mikey.

Roach said to Radio Raheem “I hear Mikey Garcia is calling him out. We’ll fight him.”

This would be an easy fight for Bob Arum of Top Rank to make because Mikey is one of his fighters in his Top Rank stable, so putting the fight together would be an easy one for Arum.

Mikey Garcia leaving it up to his promoter about who he fights

mikey888By Chris Williams: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) says he’s leaving it solely in the hands of his promoter and his manager in terms of who he’ll be facing next. Rather than saying he wants this fighter or that fighter, Mikey is leaving his career decisions in the hands of others.

His promoter Bob Arum wants Mikey to fight Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO’s), which has to be seen as a step down from Mikey’s recent win over WBO champion Roman Martinez. Mikey doesn’t seem to mind though if he fights Burgos.
