By Chris Williams: Bob Arum of Top Rank has lined up a title shot for his fighter Mercito Gesta (26-0-1, 14 KO’s) against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (32-3, 13 KO’s) on December 8th on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV on HBO pay per view.

Gesta, 25, no doubt was picked out for the card because it makes a second Filipino vs. Mexico fight to go along with the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight. There’s going to be a a lot of both Mexican and Filipino fight fans watching this card on PPV, and it looks Arum is giving them what they want by putting another rivalry type fight on the card.

By Chris Williams: #5 IBF Mercito Gesta (26-0-1, 14 KO’s) is being given a title shot against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (32-3, 13 KO’s) in a Mexico vs. the Philippines type bout on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez bout on December 8th at the MGM Grand, Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The 5’7″ Gesta is eager to get inside the ring to fight Vazquez despite having little in the way of actual experience to warrant getting a title shot. Gesta fight for the promotional giant Top Rank, and Bob Arum likes the Gesta-Vazquez fight for this card for obvious reason given the huge Mexican and Filipino fan base that will be paying to watch the fight. I wouldn’t be surprised if Arum adds two or three other Mexico vs. Filipino match-ups for the card.

By Chris Williams: It looks like undefeated lightweight contender Mercito Gesta (26-0-1, 14 KO’s) will be finally getting the title shot he so badly craves, as his promoters at Top Rank are reportedly getting Gesta a title shot against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (32-3, 13 KO’s) for December 8th on the HBO pay per view undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez 4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

There’s talk of the Gesta-Vazquez fight being the co-main event and that’s pretty hard to believe because Vazquez has a really boring fighting style and Gesta isn’t much better. Neither guy are well known in the United States, although Gesta has a large following in the Filipino community. I still don’t see this as being worthy of a co-main event status. I guess Top Rank promoter Bob Arum would be hoping that the Mexican and Filipino rivalry would be enough to interest fans from those areas to attract interest in this fight.

By Chris Williams: If Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has his way his unbeaten Top Rank stable fighter Mercito Gesta (26-0-1, 14 KO’s) will be fighting for a world title against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (31-3, 13 KO’s) as the co-feature on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez card on December 8th. For Gesta, #5 IBF, #5 WBA, to get the title shot against Vazquez it will require that Vazquez successfully defend his International Boxing Federation title against #6 IBF Marvin Quintera later on this month on October 27th.

Arum told the Manila Standard “If he [Vazquez] wins that fight and comes out unscathed then he is scheduled to fight Gesta for the lightweight title on December 8th. That would be the co-feature. It’s interesting that in each of the two fights is a Mexican against a Filipino.”

It seems that the 24-year-old Gesta feels he’s ready to challenge for a world title and the 25-year-old Vazquez is the one that he wants.
