Hopkins wants Froch and Bute after Murat

hopkins452By Scott Gilfoid: After IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KO’s) gets through taking care of his mandatory challenger Karo Murat )25-1-1, 15 KO’s) on July 27th, Hopkins wants to take on either IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch or former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. It sounds like Hopkins wants to face them back to back.

Hopkins said to RingTV “I’m biased, so I’m going to tell you who I want to win. I want Froch and Bute to win. To fight either one of them, I would go to their countries, and, you know, they love me in Canada.”

Bute-Pascal fight signed for May 25th

bute556By Allan Fox: The May 25th fight between former Canadian based world champions Jean Pascal (27-2, 16 KO’s) and Lucian Bute (31-1, 24 KO’s) is a done deal as of today, Friday. Pascal and Bute’s promoters both report that the fight has been signed and the fight go ahead at a still to be determined venue in Montreal, Canada.

This is kind of a fight that mainly Canadians are into because it’s not all that interesting for other boxing fans. Bute was badly exposed by Carl Froch last year in May, and Bute looked like a shadow of his former self in his rebound fight against Denis Grachev last November in winning a not too impressive 12 round decision. I don’t know if Bute has gotten old overnight, but he sure seems to be fighting like he has.

Bute-Pascal negotiations running smoothly for May 25th fight

bute344By Scott Gilfoid: The negotiations for the Canadian mega-fight between former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (31-1, 24 KO’s) and former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (27-2, 16 KO’s) are running smoothly for the scheduled bout between the two Canadians on May 25th at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

According to Canadian news site lapresse.ca, “all obstacles have been cleared.”

This is a fight where both guys can’t afford to lose. Pascal was pretty badly exposed in his losses to Bernard Hopkins and Carl Froch, and it’s hard to imagine him being able to come back from a loss to Bute if that happens.

Does Lucian Bute deserve a shot at the WBC 168lb title?

bute43By Thomas Cowan: Although there has been no official confirmation from the WBC, it is widely believed that Lucian Bute will be fighting the winner of the WBC final eliminator between Sakio Bika and Nikola Sjekloca for the vacant title in his next fight, as long as current champion Andre Ward is still injured. But has Bute really earned a shot at the title?

Since losing his IBF title when Carl Froch demolished him last year, Bute has only fought once. That fight was against a hard-hitting Russian, Denis Grachev, who’s a decent fighter but not world class. Bute got the win but he looked completely drained of confidence and how one of the judges saw him winning 10 rounds is beyond me, I had him winning by one round. More to the point that fight was at light heavyweight meaning Bute hasn’t fought once at super middleweight since Froch knocked him out.
