Matthysse to fight in early 2017

matthysse566

By Dan Ambrose: Light welterweight knockout artist Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) plans on returning to the ring in early 2017 in March or April, according to Ringtv.com. The 5’6” Matthysse will now be fighting in the 147lb division. That might not be the best thing for Matthysse, because he’s not a very big fighter.

We’ll have to find out how well he can handle the bigger welterweights. Golden Boy needs to keep Matthysse away from the bigger welterweights like the 5’9” Errol Spence Jr., Jessie Vargas and Kell Brook. Those guys are like big junior middleweights in size.

Postol: Matthysse is better than Crawford

crawford87

By Chris Williams: WBC light welterweight champion Viktor Postol (28-0, 12 KOs) respects his opponent WBO 140lb champion Terence Crawford (28-0, 20 KOs), and he sees him as a very good fighter in the division. However, Postol doesn’t rate the 28-year-old Crawford as high as his last opponent Lucas Matthysse.

Postol thinks Matthysse is a higher level fighter than what he’s seen of Crawford in his fights. Postol, 5’11”, stopped Matthysse in the 10th round last October at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Postol and Crawford will be fighting this month in 11 days from now on July 23 on HBO pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Their promoter Bob Arum believes the winner of the Crawford-Postol fight will be the top fighter in the 140lb division. I don’t know if it’s something to brag about that the winner of the fight Crawford vs. Postol fight being the best fighter in the division.

Matthysse could fight in September on Canelo-Golovkin card

matthysse567676By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya believes that 33-year-old Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs9 could be ready to return to the ring later this year on a pay-per-view card in September. The PPV card would be Gennady Golovkin vs. the Golden Boy promoted Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, if that fight takes place then.

Matthysse suffered a fractured orbital bone in his 10th round knockout loss to unbeaten Ukrainian Viktor Postol last October in their fight for the vacant WBC light welterweight title. Matthysse was dropped in the 10th round after getting hit with a solid right hand to his left eye.

Matthysse then stayed down and was counted out. The injury to Matthysse’s eye has kept him out of action ever since. It’s unknown if he’ll be physically or mentally ready to fight in September or not.

Matthysse pulls out of Canelo-Khan fight card due to eye problems

postol100By Scott Gilfoid: The May 7th fight card headlined by Amir Khan vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez just took a major hit on Wednesday with Argentinian welterweight slugger Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) pulling out of the card due to a lingering eye injury to his left eye.

The 34-year-old Matthysse suffered a fractured left orbital bone in his left fight against Viktor Postol last October in a failed attempt by Matthysse to win the vacant WBC light welterweight title. The idea was for Matthysse to fight Mauricio Herrera on the Canelo-Khan HBO pay-per-view card from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Matthysse-Herrera being finalized for Canelo-Khan card

matthysse567676By Jim Dower: Golden Boy Promotions are working tirelessly to finalize the negotiations for the welterweight clash between Lucas Matthysse and Mauricio Herrera for the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan card on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy expects the Matthysse-Herrera fight negotiations to be wrapped up by next week possibly. It’s a great fight matching two of the best fighters that recently moved up from the light welterweight division to take this fight.

Matthysse vs. Herrera will definitely help create some interest in the Canelo-Khan undercard, and it should be a great fight. Both guys have dealt with some disappointing defeats in recent years. Herrera was beaten by Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez in fights that many fans felt he should have won. Matthysse has suffered recent losses to Danny Garcia and Viktor Postol, two of the better fighters in the sport.

“It’s still in the works,” Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez said to ringtv.com. “It’s about a week away from getting done. There are still loose ends — details that are important that could break the fight. They’re both interested but once you go down and start talking about money and weight and this and that, you can lose the fight.”

Lucas Matthysse vs. Mauricio Herrera possible for Canelo-Khan undercard

Image: Lucas Matthysse vs. Mauricio Herrera possible for Canelo-Khan undercardBy Jeff Aranow: Former light welterweight title challenger Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) will be moving up to the 147lb division for his next fight on the undercard of the May 7 fight card headlined by WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan on HBO pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Matthysse’s possible opponent is 35-year-old Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs), who would be moving up from the 140lb division to take the fight with the 33-year-old Matthysse.

Lucas Matthysse likely for Canelo-Khan undercard on 5/7

matthysse456By Dan Ambrose: Former world title challenger Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 Kos) will be moving up to the welterweight division for his next fight, and he’s being talked about fighting in the co-feature bout on the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez v. Amir Khan fight card on May 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With Matthysse being targeted for the co-feature bout, it’s going to mean that he’ll very likely be matched against a fairly tough opponent. Hopefully, Matthysse is up to the task because this would be his first fight in the 147lb division at the full weight.

Matthysse, 33, lost his last fight to Viktor Postol by a 10th round knockout last October. Matthysse quit in the 10th round after suffering an eye injury. However, before he quit, Matthysse was being dominated by Postol and going very little.

It’s unlikely that Matthysse will do any better at 147 than he did at 140. He’ll be facing bigger guys that have better power, size and hand speed. You can understand why Matthysse would want to move up in weight because the potential for bigger money fights would be there for him if he can pick up enough wins to get a high ranking. Mattysse might even get a world title fight in the near future if he can fight frequently enough to get ranked.

Lucas Matthysse wants to train with Canelo Alvarez

matthysse567676By Dan Ambrose: Former world title challenger Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) reportedly is interested in training with WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to get help for his next fight.

Matthysse, 33, was stopped in the 10th round in his last fight against Viktor Postol in a failed attempt to win the vacant WBC light welterweight title. Matthysse suffered an eye injury in the 10th, which caused him to hit the deck and stay there as the referee counted him out.

The Argentinian Matthysse would need to transfer his place of training to relocate to Mexico if he wants to train with the 25-year-old Canelo.

Matthysse could be moving up to 147

matthysse456By Dan Ambrose: 33-year-old former light welterweight title challenger Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) could be moving up to welterweight (147) for his next fight in the spring.

Matthysse had been thinking about making the move in 2016 anyway, but a loss to Viktor Postol last October may be the factor that is quickening his move up in weight. Matthysse was stopped in the 10th round by the taller 5’11” Postol.

If Matthysse were to stay at 140, he’d likely be in a bad position because two of the champions being very good ones in Postol and Terence Crawford. If Matthysse moves up in weight to welterweight, he could have a chance of finding success in that division against some of the top fighters. The paydays would likely be better for Matthysse at welterweight as well, because that is where the biggest names are now.

2016 Matchup Wishlist: Jr.Welterweight

postol111By Ross Walker: Disclaimer: Some fighters on this list may be included in match ups in other divisions, if this is the case they will appear in the heavier division’s list.

Terence Crawford vs. Viktor Postol

Postol is coming off a 10th round KO win over Lucas Matthysse as well as being named Freddie Roach’s new “favorite fighter.” Postol was flying under the radar as an undefeated, intelligent and lanky Jr. Welterweight until knocking out Matthysse. This was largely due to his lack of big-name opponents and American exposure. Adding to Postol’s unknown to most fans was his lack of KO victories, this all changed when (surprise, surprise) Roach got his hands on him. Crawford, on the other hand, is becoming well known to casual fans and is already the favorite of most hard-core boxing fans.
