Carl Frampton wants Leo Santa Cruz next

frampton32333By Scott Gilfoid: Now that Carl Frampton (22-0, 14 KOs) has done what most people thought he would do in beating WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (31-1-2, 23 KOs) last night by a 12 round split decision at the Manchester Arena, Frampton isn’t so sure whether he’ll face the WBA mandatory challenger Guillermo Rigondeaux next.

The World Boxing Association already said the winner of the Frampton-Quigg fight had to defend the WBA title against Rigondeaux next, but it is unclear whether the 28-year-old Frampton will do that. He is talking about wanting to face undefeated WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (32-0-1, 18 KOs) next.

Image: Santa Cruz KOs Kiko Martinez in 5th(Photo Credit: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (32-0-1, 18 KOs) made it exciting tonight in going toe-to-toe with #9 WBA challenger Kiko Martinez 36-7, 26 KOs) in stopping him in the 5th round on Saturday night in a fight televised by Showtime Championship Boxing at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California, USA. Santa Cruz put Martinez down two times in the 1st round, but was unable to get him out of there. Martinez never stopped coming forward in the subsequent rounds, and he was catching Santa Cruz with some really big shots. Those punches would have knocked out a lot of guys, but Santa Cruz was able to take them without any signs of ever being hurt.

Santa Cruz trapped the 29-year-old Martinez against the ropes in the 5th and then flurried on him until referee Raul Caiz Sr. stepped in and halted the contest at 2:09 of the round. To his credit, Martinez was still on his feet, but he wasn’t throwing anything back and was just covering up during the final seconds of the flurry.

Kiko Martinez confident of victory against Leo Santa Cruz

Image: Kiko Martinez confident of victory against Leo Santa Cruz(Credit: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: Despite some recent defeats that have slowed his career, former IBF super bantamweight world champion Kiko Martinez (35-6, 26 KOs) is confident of victory on Saturday night when he challenges WBA Super World featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (31-0-1, 17 KOs) in their fight at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Santa Cruz wants Frampton-Quigg winner

Image: Santa Cruz wants Frampton-Quigg winnerBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA Super World featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (31-0-1, 17 KOs) is another fighter that will be closely watching this Saturday’s unification fight between IBF super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (31-0-2, 23 KOs) and IBF 122lb champion Carl Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs) in hopes of getting a fight against the winner of that contest.

Santa Cruz has been interested in fighting Frampton and Quigg for some time, but he’s just not had the luck of getting either of them in the ring. Now, however, it could be a possibility, because it doesn’t look like the winner of the Frampton-Quigg fight will be bothering to face Guillermo Rigondeaux, who also is interested in facing the winner.

Leo Santa Cruz vs. Gary Russell Jr: C’mon Al Make the Fight

1-SANTA CRUZ VS MARES4445By Listen: The Premier Boxing Championship series, the brain child of super promoter Al Haymon debut in 2015 with mixed results from the boxing community. Fans have accused the PBS of everything from questionable match making to gift wrapped championship opportunities. The PBC did however provide plenty unheralded bouts, such as James Degale V Andre Dirrell and Danny Garcia V Lamont Peterson that had some boxing fans on the edge of their seats.

The sophomore year of PBS, should begin and or be highlighted by a potential FOY candidate matching WBA Super Featherweight Champion Leo Santa Cruz (31-0-1 17KO’s) against WBC World Featherweight Champion Gary Russell Jr. (26-1 15KO’s).

Leo Santa Cruz vs. Kiko Martinez on February 20 in Los Angeles, CA

Santa-Cruz-Mares-REsults (7)By Dan Ambrose: WBA featherweight Super champion Leo Santa Cruz (31-0-1, 17 KOs) will be defending his WBA title against 29-year-old former IBF super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez (34-6, 25 KOs) on February 20 in Los Angeles, California, according to Fight News. The venue for the fight still hasn’t been determined at this time.

This is an unusual choice of an opponent for Santa Cruz, because he’s a featherweight champion and Martinez fights in the 122lb division and was recently knocked out in two rounds by WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg last year in July in the UK. Martinez has since won his last three fights against weak opposition in beating Miguel Gonzalez, Everth Briceno and Herald Molina.
