Wladimir on the verge of passing Holmes for 2nd place in longest title reigns

wlad34By Allan Fox: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (60-3, 51 KO’s) will be passing former heavyweight world champion Larry Holmes next month as the heavyweight champion with the 2nd longest world title reign. Holmes is in 2nd place with having previously held a world title for 7 years and three months, according to Dan Rafael.

Wladimir will be toping that next month once he goes past 7 years, three months and 12 days. Wladimir has held his IBF title since beating Chris Byrd by a 7th round TKO on April 22nd in 2006, and he’s successfully defended the belt 14 times. Even with Wladimir moving into 2nd place next month in the longest title reign department, he’ll still trail Holmes in the overall title defense department.

Former Heavyweight Champion of the World Larry Holmes has dismissed the current crop of heavyweight boxers as nothing more than ‘big and strong guys who don’t know how to fight.’

Speaking to Setanta Sports News Holmes said:

“If you want to prove yourself as a champion, you have to fight everybody and anybody who comes up and gives you that challenge. You have to prove yourself worthy of being Heavyweight Champion of the World.

Holmes: “All these years later, people just can’t forget that”

Former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes (69-6, 44 KOs) is still bothered by his comment he made about former boxing great Rocky Marciano, when Holmes remarked “If you want to get technical about it, Rocky Marciano couldn’t carry my jockstrap,” after losing to challenger Michael Spinks in September 1985. The loss was even more disappointing because Holmes was 48-0 at the time of the fight and poised to tie Marciano’s long held record of 49-0.
