Bumper card at the O2 Arena, London, May 30th

mitchell100By Gav Duthie: Kevin Mitchell 39-2 (29) will be hoping third time is a charm as he again prepares for a title shot against Jorge Linares 38-3 (25) on May 30th in London.

Not content with one title fight Eddie Hearn has also moved the Evgeny Gradovich 19-0-1 (9) v Lee Selby 20-1 (8) from its April date. Another third times a charm attempt to put Anthony Joshua 10-0 (10) against Kevin Johnson 29-6 (14) will be chief support.

Mitchell v Linares

The hope is that at age 30 Mitchell is finally ready for a world title. In my opinion he is one of the best boxers around not to win one.

Kevin Mitchell figures he’s ready to win a world title

mitchell100By Scott Gilfoid: After toiling away for 12 years as a pro and finding some success but also failure, newly crowned WBC Silver lightweight champion Kevin Mitchell (39-2, 29 KOs) thinks he’s ready to win a world title against one of the lightweight champions like WBC belt holder Jorge Linares of WBA champ Richard Abril.

Last Saturday night, Mitchell defeated a guy that was totally made to order for him in 29-year-old #6 WBC Daniel Estrada (32-4-1, 24 KOs) by an 8th round TKO at the O2 Arena in London, UK. This fight was the equivalent of Brand Rios vs. Mike Alvarado 3 with Estrada coming off as the Alvarado fighter.

It was perfect match-making on Mitchell’s promoter Eddie Hearn’s part in finding a guy who was easy to hit, not particularly fast or powerful, and who’d been knocked out in his last fight by Omar Figueroa.

Mitchell defeats Estrada in WBC eliminator

mitchell4By Scott Gilfoid: A hulking #7 WBC lightweight contender Kevin Mitchell (39-2, 29 KOs), who looked like a welterweight in size after rehydrating, destroyed a badly overmatched #6 WBC Daniel Estrada (32-4-1, 24 Ks) in stopping him in the 8th round on Saturday night to win the vacant World Boxing Council Silver lightweight strap in their WBC title eliminator at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Mitchell hurt Estrada with some hard uppercuts in the 8th and he was pretty much handing it to the Mexican fighter until referee John-Lewis finally did the sensible thing and stopped the fight at 1:12 of the 8th.

Kevin Mitchell: I’m ready for that title

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: #7 WBC Kevin Mitchell (38-2, 28 KOs) will be facing #6 WBC Daniel Estrada (32-3-1, 24 KOs) this Saturday night in their WBC lightweight eliminator bout at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Mitchell and Estrada will be fighting for the vacant WBC Silver lightweight title.

For the 30-year-old Mitchell, it might be a last shot for him to get another world title shot. He was whipped badly the last time he fought for a world title in 2012 when he was stopped in the 4th round by former WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns.

Kevin Mitchell vs. Daniel Estrada WBC lightweight eliminator on January 31st in London, UK

mitchell111By Scott Gilfoid: #7 WBC Kevin Mitchell (38-2, 28 KOs) will be facing #6 WBC Daniel Estrada (32-3-1, 24 KOs) in a WBC lightweight title eliminator on January 31st on the Anthony Joshua vs. Kevin Mitchell card at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Mitchell and his promoter Eddie Hearn believe that the 29-year-old Estrada, who was recently knocked out in his last fight by Omar Figueroa, is the best path to a title shot. Mitchell thinks he’s got what it takes to beat WBO lightweight champion Jorge Linares if given the chance.

Mitchell defeats Maduma by controversial stoppage

mitchell111By Scott Gilfoid: In a highly controversial stoppage, Kevin Mitchell (38-2, 28 KO’s) defeated Ghislain Maduma (16-1, 10 KO’s) by an 11th round TKO tonight in an IBF lightweight eliminator at Wembley Stadium in London, England. Mitchell was behind in the fight going into the 11th. He hurt Maduma, knocking him into the ropes.

The referee Phil Edwards ruled a knockdown. Second later, Mitchell knocked Maduma down with a right hand to the head. After Maduma got back up, the referee halted the fight despite the fact that Maduma was bouncing on his feet and ready to continue fighting but the referee halted it anyway.

Kevin Mitchell comes in overweight in secondary weigh-in for Maduma fight

mitchell778By Scott Gilfoid: Kevin Mitchell (37-2, 27 KO’s) weighed in heavy for his secondary check weigh-in this morning for tonight’s fight against Ghislain Maduma (16-0, 10 KO’s), and it’s now unclear whether Mitchell will still be eligible to become the IBF mandatory challenger if he beats Maduma tonight. Their bout is an IBF lightweight eliminator bout on the Carl Froch – George Groves card at Wembley Stadium.

Mitchell, who had looked huge over week ago before he started cutting weight, came in at 10st 6lbs 11oz. The weight limit increase is 10lbs, and Mitchell definitely went over that. For his part, Maduma had zero problems hitting his check in weight.

Ghislain Maduma looks in top condition for Kevin Mitchell fight

maduma577By Scott Gilfoid: #4 IBF Ghislain Maduma (16-0, 10 KO’s) looked as cut up as a statue at today’s weigh-in for his IBF lightweight eliminator bout tomorrow night against #5 IBF Kevin Mitchell (37-2, 17 KO’s) at Wembley Stadium in London, UK.

Maduma, 29, has the best set of skills of anyone that Mitchell has faced before in his career, and I just don’t know that Mitchell is going to be able to last long against this guy unless he runs and fights a safety first type of fight. That’s probably about the only way that Maduma doesn’t knock him immediately. The guy is so fast and powerful. I don’t think Mitchell has ever shared the ring with a fighter like this.

Kevin Mitchell ready for Vazquez if he beats Maduma on Saturday

mitchell57By Scott Gilfoid: Kevin Mitchell (37-2, 27 KO’s) has an important match-up on Saturday night against #4 IBF Ghislain Maduma (16-0, 10 KO’s) in an IBF lightweight title eliminator with the winner getting a crack at IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (34-3, 13 KO’s). Mitchell thinks he’s ready for that fight, but the problem is he’s fighting a guy that may prove to be impossible to beat in Maduma.

The basic problem that Mitchell has is Maduma is faster, stronger and a better boxer than him. Maduma appears to be superior to Mitchell in every category you can name except for experience, as Mitchell definitely has a clear advantage in that area. But for the most part, Mitchell’s experience against better fighters have been mostly negative, so you have to wonder whether his experience has actually helped him.

Maduma: I’m bringing my A-game for Kevin Mitchell on Saturday

maduma44By Scott Gilfoid: #4 IBF Ghislain Maduma (16-0, 10 KO’s) is ready for this Saturday’s IBF lightweight title eliminator bout against #5 IBF Kevin Mitchell (37-2, 27 KO’s) for their fight at the Wembley Stadium in London, UK. The winner of the fight becomes the IBF mandatory challenger to IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez. Having seen Maduma fight a number of times, I think Mitchell, 29, really has his work cut out for him in this fight, as Maduma is a lot faster than him and a much bigger puncher.

The difference in hand speed alone is going to make it all but impossible for Mitchell to win on Saturday unless perhaps by a decision, albeit a controversial one.
