maduma577By Scott Gilfoid: #4 IBF Ghislain Maduma (16-0, 10 KO’s) looked as cut up as a statue at today’s weigh-in for his IBF lightweight eliminator bout tomorrow night against #5 IBF Kevin Mitchell (37-2, 17 KO’s) at Wembley Stadium in London, UK.

Maduma, 29, has the best set of skills of anyone that Mitchell has faced before in his career, and I just don’t know that Mitchell is going to be able to last long against this guy unless he runs and fights a safety first type of fight. That’s probably about the only way that Maduma doesn’t knock him immediately. The guy is so fast and powerful. I don’t think Mitchell has ever shared the ring with a fighter like this.

Maduma has been knocking guys out lately at an alarming rate with blazing fast power shots to the head. He’s got one-punch power when he loads up on his shots, and I can see him knocking Mitchell out in front of 80,000 fans tomorrow night at Wembley if he connects with something solid.

Mitchell, 29, is kind of at the last chance saloon at this stage in his career for this fight. A loss for Mitchell and it be pretty much over for him at the world stage. Yeah, he can continue to fight at a domestic level against the guys he’s been mostly fighting during his career, but he likely won’t be able to come back from a devastating loss to Maduma. The defeat to him will almost surely knock Mitchell down from his #5 ranking to either bottom fringe contender at No.15 or possibly even out of the top 15 altogether.

That’s how serious Mitchell’s predicament is. I mean, he’s not like Maduma, who still hasn’t been beaten yet, and he has the future at his feet. Mitchell has already been scalped twice during his career by Michael Katsidis and Ricky Burns. The ease with which Mitchell lost to those fighters was really telling. You don’t lose as badly as Mitchell did to those guys unless there’s something wrong with his game that needs fixing.
