Khan likely to stay inactive until June for Brook fight

khanBy Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) hasn’t fought in eight months since his close 12 round decision over Chris Algieri in May. As of now, it’s not looking like Khan will be fighting anytime soon. The 29-year-old Khan doesn’t have a fight scheduled, and it’s assumed by many that he’s going to stay inactive until June of this year for a big money fight against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook at Wembley Stadium in London, England.

If it plays out like that, then Khan will have been out of the ring for over one year (13 months) since his last fight against Algieri. As much as I’d like to give Khan a chance in the Brook fight, I don’t think I could. If Khan is willing to stay out of the ring for over a year before fighting again against a potentially difficult opponent like Brook, it tells me that he’s merely looking for a big payday and not really serious about the sport like he had been in the past.

Khan has wasted approximately two years of his career chasing fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao over the last three years, and he has zero to show for the time spent. Now it looks like Khan is content to use up another five months of his career waiting on the Brook fight.

Khan v Brook on course for June

brook9By Matt Plumridge: The eagerly anticipated – and some say long overdue – matchup between “Special K” Kell Brook (35-0) and Amir “King” Khan (31-3) for Brooks’ IBF Welterweight title has been penciled in for the 4th June at Wembley Stadium, London.

Brooks’ promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that he has both booked the venue and invited Khan’s management team back to the table for negotiations. Both fighters would stand to pocket a minimum of £3million each ($5 million) in what would be a potential 80,000 sell out, a box office hit in the UK and of reasonable interest on the world stage.

Neither fighter has ever gotten on well with the other – so that ill feeling hype, plus the fact that both look well matched, makes for the type of fight that will have boxing fans prepared to shell out their hard earned cash to see whether Khan or Kell will get the KO.

Hearn doubts Khan wants Kell Brook fight

khan44By Scott Gilfoid: Barry Hearn of Matchroom Sport, the promoters for IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs), has doubts about #1 WBC, #2 WBA, #3 WBO, #4 IBF welterweight contender Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) wanting a fight against Brook this year.

Hearn sees Khan wasting time chasing fights that aren’t there for him against superstars Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, and he sees it as silly that Khan isn’t taking the fight that is there against Brook. Hearn thinks that Khan can only get $1-1.5 million for his fights in the United States. But if he faces Brook, Hearn thinks Khan could get from 3 to 4 times that amount.

Hearn wants to setup a fight between Khan and Brook on June 4th at the giant Wembley Stadium in London, UK. But it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. It’s already January and there hasn’t been any negotiations for the fight with Khan and Hearn.

Hearn wants Brook-Bizier on February 20th

hearn7890By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says he wants to match IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) against #5 IBF Kevin Bizier (25-2, 17 KOs) on February 20th in Sheffield unless Bizier’s promoter wants to come up with the money to stage the fight in the United States or Canada.

The International Boxing Federation recently ordered Brook to defend his title against the 31-year-old Bizier. Brook had previously been on course to defend his IBF title against #4 IBF Diego Chaves, but an injury for Brook caused that fight to be postponed and then finally cancelled due to the IBF ordering the Brook vs. Bizier fight.

Chaves would have been a much better fight, but still not much better. It’s just kind of sad that Brook still has not fought anyone good during his career other than Shawn Porter, who Brook clinched constantly to win a controversial decision over in 2014.

Hearn believes Khan-Brook deal can be done by next week

hearn333By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport will be meeting with Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) next week to put together a fight between him and Brook for next Summer.

Hearn believes that he can have the negotiations completed by next week for a mega-fight in the UK. Hearn notes that Khan didn’t get the important fight that he was hoping to bag against Filipino star Manny Pacquiao, so now all he has left is a fight against his fighter Brook (35-0, 24 KOs).

“I have said to Amir that if we don’t get this sorted in the next couple of weeks we will miss the boat for a summer fight,” Hearn said to sports360.com. “Amir’s not got the Pacquiao fight.”

British Boxing Explosion

brook67By Matthew J. Hunter: Is the recent explosion of elite or at least championship quality British Boxing a trend that will continue? With the number of champions at 12 it looks to be better than ever. Looking at the breakdown of champions by region, it becomes clear that Europe, with the help of the rise of British boxing, has skyrocketed.

Central America and the Caribbean, which includes historic boxing hotbeds Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, have the second most champions at 25. Several questions arise at this, is this trend purely a trend? Will the fact that big money boxing is usually in America hinder the progression of European champions? Is the connotation that boxing in America is the highest level put doubt on the credibility of these British and European champions?

Tyson Fury, James Degale, Liam Smith, Kell Brook, Anthony Crolla, Terry Flanagan, Lee Selby, Scott Quigg, Carl Frampton, Lee Haskins, Jamie McDonnell, and Andy Lee all represent the UK and Ireland going forward.

Hearn wants Brook vs. Bizier in U.S in early 2016

brook4By Scott Gilfoid: Rather than stage a fight that he feels wouldn’t interest the British public in the UK, Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s interested in having his fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s next title defense against #5 IBF Kevin Bizier (25-2, 17 KOs) take place in the United States.

It’s unclear why Hearn would want to have an awful fight like Brook-Bizier be staged in the U.S., because it’s not a good match-up, and Bizier isn’t from the United States. He’s from Canada, and he’s already been beaten twice by former Brook victim Jo Jo Dan. The last time Bizier was beaten by Jo Jo Dan was just last December in Canada.

Hearn says Khan-Brook could take place this summer

hearn54By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says he thinks Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) will be facing his fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) this coming summer in 2016.

Even Khan himself is saying he’ll be fighting Brook if he can’t get the fight that he’s been talking about wanting to get against Manny Pacquiao. Since it doesn’t look like Khan is going to be getting that fight, he’s kind of stuck with Brook as his only option for a big money fight.

The Spence Jr. vs. Barrera fight was an IBF 147lb eliminator fight, but not a final eliminator.

Spence Jr. has one more eliminator to go before he’ll be in position to fight Brook for his IBF 147lb title. Spence says he’s willing to go to the UK to fight Brook in front of his British fans.

Is Hearn positioning Malignaggi for Kell Brook fight?

malignaggi133By Scott Gilfoid: It was just announced that 35-year-old Paulie Malignaggi (34-7, 7 KOs) has been added to the Eddie Hearn promoted December 12th card at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Malignaggi will be fighting 45-year-old EBU welterweight champion Gianluca Branco (49-3-1, 24 KOs) on the undercard of the heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte.

British promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport also promotes IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook. The talk that is floating around the boxing world is that the reason why Hearn is adding Malignaggi to the December 12th Joshua-Whyte card on Sky Box Office is to whet the appetite of British boxing fans so that he can put Malignaggi in with Brook in 2016.
