Keith Thurman vs. Kell Brook, who wins?

brook43

By Jaime Ortega: The welterweight division is packed with talent and undefeated champions. One of them is IBF champion of the world, Kell Brook, an undefeated boxer who many believe will conquer the welterweight division. Others believe that Brook is another English hype job created by his promoter.

Brook has been under a lot pressure from his fans to fight legit opponents. The criticism originated after his fight with Shawn Porter, he started to select easy fights to boost his undefeated record and build up his legacy. His fights with Jo Jo Dan, Frankie Gavin and Kevin Bizier earned him a bad reputation among his fan base for picking weak one-dimensional boxers – unknown Europeans!

Brook vs. Vargas will get made this week, says Hearn

brook5333

By Patrick McHugh: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) and WBO champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) could be facing each other real soon, according to Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport. Hearn says they made a large offer of $2 million to Vargas for the fight, which he says is more than what Brook will be making for the fight.

Hearn and Brook want the fight badly enough for them to take the smaller money despite him being the home fighter when the two champions face each other in Sheffield, UK. They want Vargas’ WBO 147lb title because they believe this will make Brook the dominant fighter in the welterweight division. From there, they believe they’ll get fights against the other top champions in Keith “One Time” Thurman and Danny Garcia. Brook also wants to fight former two division world champion Tim Bradley.

Jessie Vargas losing patience with Kell Brook

vargas

By Scott Gilfoid: Like Brandon Rios did in the past, WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) appears to be losing patience with the glacially slow negotiations that are taking place with his management and the management of IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs), and he’s now talking about wanting to potentially fight a rematch against fellow Top Rank fighter Timothy Bradley (33-2-1, 13 KOs), who Vargas lost to by a 12 round unanimous decision in June of 2015 in losing by the scores of 115-112, 116-112 and 117-111. Gee, I wonder if Brook is getting stage fright?

A fight between Vargas and Bradley would be a relatively simple matter if Bradley is game. We don’t know whether Bradley would be up for a second fight against the 27-year-old Vargas right now, because Bradley was just beaten by Manny Pacquiao by a 12 round unanimous decision last April.

Hearn: Kell Brook is better than Thurman

brook91111

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) and WBA 147lb champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) could be facing each other in the future if Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn has anything to do with it. Hearn wants to match Brook against Thurman in a unification match if Brook can beat WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas in their fight in September.

Hearn likes Brook’s chances of beating Thurman to take his WBA strap. Indeed, Hearn thinks Brook is a better fighter than Thurman. I’m not sure that I agree with Hearn, but then again, I’ve seen Brook fight many times. I saw how Brook was out on his feet in the 12th round against Carson Jones in 2012. Somehow, I don’t think Thurman would ever be hurt by Jones, but Brook sure was.

Kell Brook rated #1 in Ring Magazine rankings

brook6

By Scott Gilfoid: Ring Magazine has IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) rated as their No.1 fighter at 147. This is pretty impressive given that the 30-year-old Brook has arguably only fought one good opponent in his entire 12-year pro career in Shawn Porter from two years ago in 2014.

If Brook retires now, he can go out on a high note knowing that he was rated as Ring’s top #1 welterweight. It would be Brook’s 15 minutes of fame. However, I’m not sure if I agree with the Ring’s ratings, because I tend to rate fighters based on a combination of talent and experience rather than a single victory they won two years ago. Frankly, I see Brook lacking in the talent department compared to several other fighters that I rate above him like Errol Spence Jr., Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.

Brook will be facing WBO 147lb champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) in a unification fight in September at a still to be determined official date. Brook says he wants to unify all the titles at welterweight. Whether he can accomplish that is anyone’s guess.

Kell Brook: I need to fight Thurman!

brook8

By Scott Gilfoid: Sporting a slight double chin, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) said last Saturday night that he wants to fight WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) after he beats WBO 147lb champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) in their unification fight in September at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, UK.

Brook says there’s no reason for Thurman to fight a rematch against Shawn Porter, who Thurman defeated by a razor thin 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Brook, 30, wants a crack at Thurman, because he wants to collect his WBA belt after he’s taken care of business in taking Vargas’s WBO strap.

Thurman would have to be seen as the favorite against Brook, because he’s faster and a very elusive. Brook wouldn’t be able to go back to his bag of tricks to try and beat a fighter like Thurman like he did in his 12 round decision win over Porter from 2014, because Thurman doesn’t fight on the inside that often.

Brook wants Thurman vs. Porter winner

thurman888

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) says he wants to fight the winner of this Saturday’s fight between WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) and Shawn Porter (26-1-1-1, 16 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Porter vs. Thurman fight will be televised on Showtime Boxing.

Brook thinks Porter will defeat Thurman on Saturday. Brook says he would then like to take on Porter in a rematch. However, Brook still has a fight scheduled on September 3 against WBO 147lb champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, KOs) that he needs to win first before he can start thinking of another unification match. Brook says he would also like to fight WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia as well.

The battle for welterweight supremacy

brook6

By Gav Duthie: It’s been a throwaway comment for years now that the welterweight division is the best in boxing. After only one year after the highest grossing fight of all time between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao the division has completely transformed with those two retiring, a new set of champions and a fresh batch of competitors.

With the heavyweight division gaining excitement after arguably two decades of decay and a solid cruiserweight division it is up to the new batch of fighters to restore welterweight glory and crown a new king.

This piece assesses the current situation, the top contenders and their willingness to fight each other as well as provide predictions as to the new dominant force. The auditions start next week with Keith Thurman facing Shawn Porter.

Khan: Kell Brook still has to prove himself

Image: Khan: Kell Brook still has to prove himself

By Scott Gilfoid: Despite Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) coming off a brutal sixth round knockout loss to former WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on May 7 last month, Khan says he won’t give IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) a fight between he says he’s still not fighting “A-list” fighters yet, and he feels that 30-year-old has to earn the right to fight him by fighting the top guys.

Khan says if Brook fights half the top caliber fighters he’s faced during his career, then he’ll fight him.

Kell Brook vs. Jessie Vargas confirmed for September 3

brook6

By Scott Gilfoid: The unification fight between IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) and WBO 147lb champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) finally has a set date on September 3, according to Vargas’ post on his Facebook. The Brook-Vargas fight will take place in Sheffield, UK, and will likely be televised on Sky Box Office pay-per-view, and on HBO. Vargas is with Top Rank, and it’s possible the fight could wind up on HBO PPV if Top Rank boss Bob Arum decides to designate it for pay television.

It’s obviously not a pay-per-view worth fight in the States, but then again neither is the July 23 fight between Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol. That fight will be on HBO PPV.

“It’s already confirmed my next fight for the 3th of September in England and will be televised by PPV / HBO and / Azteca! I’ll be defending my championship of the world and I’ll be fighting for another world championship to add to my list. On 3 September, I crowned WBO and IBF champion,” said Vargas on his Facebook.
