UK Pound For Pound

froch257By James P Sexton: The UK has always had a player on the world stage at one weight or another. Today there are promising prospects and current champions which hail from the UK at numerous weights, often with several top talents in each weight class sparking many grudge matches and domestic bouts. Here is my personal opinion on an all British pound for pound list.

1. Carl Froch – This man has been the face of British boxing for a short while now, having had twelve consecutive World Title fights at super middleweight after a long run as British and Commonwealth champion.

Khan vs Brook at Wembley?

brook5666By James P Sexton: Amir Khan’s long run at trying to lure pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr into a lucrative pay-per-view bout seems to be at an end. Mayweather has said that Khan doesn’t have the name to generate the interest he is looking for.

If Khan can get neither Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao  bouts who will be his next choice of opponent? Assuming he can and will move on from these bouts to other things, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook would seem to be the next best thing.

Malignaggi interested in Kell Brook fight

malignaggi133By Scott Gilfoid: Former two division belt holder Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) says he’s interested in facing IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) for his IBF strap. Malignaggi, 34, has been out of the ring for the past nine months since getting stopped in the 4th round by Shawn Porter last April.

It was a brutal beating that Malignaggi suffered in that fight, and it was thought by some boxing fans that he would retire rather than carry on. However, it now looks like Malignaggi is interested in fighting for another world title. Whether or not Brook is interested in giving him a shot is the big question.

Kell Brook vs. Floyd Mayweather possible for September, 2015

brook6677By Scott Gilfoid: With Amir Khan showing no interest whatsoever in getting in the ring with IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs), we could see Brook as a possible opponent for WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) for September of 2015.

Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport said that he’s spoken to Mayweather’s adviser Al Haymon about a fight between Brook and Mayweather for September of next year.

Hearn: Haymon loves the Khan-Brook fight

khan88By Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Eddie Hearn says that Amir Khan’s adviser Al Haymon is interested in a fight between Khan and IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook. Hearn is hoping that a fight between Khan and Brook can get negotiated by January in order for the fight to take place at Wembley Stadium in the summer.

Unfortunately, Khan is still holding out for a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr in early 2015, even though Mayweather said that he has no interested in fighting Khan.

Khan: I’m not going to fight Kell Brook because he’s disrespectful

khan777776By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) has a new excuse for why he doesn’t plan on fighting IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs). Khan is now saying he doesn’t want to fight Brook because he’s been disrespectful to him.

In other words, Khan is pulling out the same excuse that Ricky Hatton used many years ago to not face Junior Witter. It’s not a great excuse, but it’s different from the ones that Khan used in the past. Khan used to say that he didn’t want to fight Brook because he didn’t have enough experience for him to fight him.

Hearn: If Khan doesn’t fight Mayweather, he has to fight Kell Brook

hearn44By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is counting on Amir Khan facing his fighter IBF welterweight champion if Khan gets passed over by Floyd Mayweather Jr for a fight in early 2015. Mayweather has pretty much already ruled out a fight against Khan in early 2015 anyway, but Khan appears to be stubbornly holding out hope that he’ll still get the fight against Mayweather if he doesn’t wind up facing Pacquiao.

Hearn is also holding out hope that Khan will wind up facing his guy Brook if he can’t get the Mayweather fight, which would seem like it’s going to be the case.

Jo Jo Dan now Kell Brook’s IBF #1 contender

fight night-0007(Photo credit: Amanda Kwok/SHOWTIME) By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook may have learned who his next opponent will be last night after #2 IBF Jo Jo Dan (34-2, 18 KOs) defeated Canada’s Kevin Bizier (23-2, 16 KOs) by a 12 round split decision at the Colisee de Quebec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

The judges scored the fight 115-112, 114-113 for Dan and 114-113 for Bizier.

Dan is a light puncher with not much in the way of defense and hand speed. In other words, he’s the perfect stay busy fight for Brook for his next fight in March.

Khan says Mayweather won’t be seen as a legend if he fights Brook instead of him

khan67777By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr won’t be seen as a legend of the sport after he retires if he chooses to fight IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook rather than himself for his next fight.

To Khan, Mayweather choosing Brook to fight would be a sign that he’s running from himself, even though Khan doesn’t hold down a title and is a mere contender with two defeats in his last six fights.

When asked what he’d think if Brook got the Mayweather fight instead of himself, Khan said to Fighthype.com “It shows Floyd’s on the run. If it happens, he will never be seen as a legend in the sport or he’ll never be seen like the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard… because obviously he’s avoiding a lot of big fighters.”

Khan and Brook, the tale of 2 opposites

brook5666By Daven: For bordering on three years now Kell Brook and Eddie Hearn have been calling out Amir Khan, while feasting on the blood of second and even third tier fighters. With Brook having problems earlier in the year, one wonders how long he’ll remain a ‘champion.’

I use the term because he’s beaten nobody to warrant such a title, if anything his bout with Porter was a draw, not a 117-11 victory. Amir ‘King’ Khan is trying to establish a solid fan base in America right now and doesn’t feel the need to fight in little old Sheffield in contrast to Brook.
