Keith Thurman vs. Jan Zaveck possible for March 9th

thurman54By Dan Ambrose: A fight between unbeaten junior middleweight contender Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) and former IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (32-2, 18 KO’s) is possible for March 9th on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins vs. Tavoris Cloud card at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, a deal between the 24-year-old Thurman and the 36-year-old Zaveck has been agreed on but contracts haven’t been signed. If this fight can be put together it would be a nice one for Thurman, #2 WBO, #9 IBF, and also a pretty good one for Zaveck if he were to win it.

I think it would be a really risky fight for the 5’7 ½” Zaveck because he doesn’t have the same size as the 5’11” Thurman. However, if Zaveck agrees to the fight then there must be something he sees in Thurman’s game that makes him think that he can win this one.

Is Keith Thurman ready to challenge the top fighters at 154?

thurman54By Dan Ambrose: #2 WBO, #3 WBA, #9 IBF junior middleweight contender Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) has recently seen his world ranking soar after beating Carlos Quintana last November by a 4th round knockout in Ontario, California. The win was impressive in that Quintana had never been bludgeoned like that before during his career.

Quintana had been knocked out by Miguel Cotto and Paul Williams in the past, but he’d never been dominated the way that Thurman did it. Quintana looked terrified the entire time that Thurman stalked him around the ring, hitting him with huge shots that clearly bothered Quintana.

Keith Thurman in action on March 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York

thurman542By Dan Ambrose: #2 WBO, #3 WBA, #9 IBF, junior middleweight contender Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) is waiting to find out who his opponent will be for his scheduled 10 round bout on the undercard of Bernard Hopkins vs. Tavoris Cloud at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The 24-year-old Thurman’s 4th round destruction of former WBO welterweight champion Carlos Quintana last November really pushed Thurman up the junior middleweight rankings to where he’s now nearing title shots against 154 pound champions Austin Trout, Zaurbek Baysangurov and Cornelius Bundrage. Thurman is one of the biggest punchers and most exciting fighters in the junior middleweight division right now. I think he’s good enough to beat Saul Alvarez and most of the other champions at this weight.

Keith Thurman picked by RingTV as Prospect of the year for 2012

thurman32By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten junior middleweight prospect Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) has been selected by RingTV.com as the prospect of the year for 2012 for his wins over Carlos Quintana, Orlando Lora, Brandon Hoskins and Christopher Fernandez. Thurman, 24, has looked good as of late, knocking out his last eight opponents dating back to November 2009. His knockout of Quintana was especially impressive, as he took him out in only four rounds.

The one drawback to Thurman’s game is his lack of skills. He seems to load up on everything he throws, and doesn’t seem to show a lot of other things you’d like to see in a fighter like a good jab, speed, varying his power, moving his head, blocking punching. When Thurman eventually faces someone that can handle his power, he’s going to have problems, especially if his opponent also has good power.

Maidana-Thurman possible for April

Image: Maidana-Thurman possible for AprilBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions is looking to put together a fight card with welterweight contenders Marcos Maidana (32-3, 29 KO’s) facing highly hyped unbeaten Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) and unbeaten featherweight Gary Russell Jr. (21-0, 13 KO’s) facing an opponent still to be determined in April in a doubleheader, according to RingTV.

Golden Boy was hoping to get Jhonny Gonzalez for Russell Jr., but he reportedly wasn’t interested in the fight. Hopefully they can find a good opponent for Russell Jr. because he really needs to step it up already and start facing some better opposition if he wants to keep improving as a fighter.

Keith Thurman looks good enough to give Saul Alvarez problems

Image: Keith Thurman looks good enough to give Saul Alvarez problemsBy Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) made Carlos Quintana (29-4, 23 KO’s) look really bad in losing to Thurman by a 4th round TKO on the Andre Berto vs. Robert Guerrero card in Ontario, California. The win by the 5’11” Thurman showed not only his raw power, which is quite top notch, but also poise and maturity that few fighters his age have.

Thurman looks ready to take on WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Vanes Martirosyan, Miguel Cotto, Erislandy Lara and Cornelius Bundrage. I can see Thurman giving all of those guys a real run for their money with his power. Alvarez, 5’9″, isn’t a very big junior middleweight and I think Thurman would give him some problems with his height, reach and power. The same goes for the 5’7″ Cotto. He’s a lot smaller than Thurman, and he tends to break down when he gets in wars with strong fighters. Thurman might be too big and power for the likes of Cotto.

Thurman impressive in defeating Quintana

Image: Thurman impressive in defeating QuintanaBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated welterweight/junior middleweight Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) looked like a one-man wrecking crew last night in destroying former WBO welterweight champion Carlos Quintana (29-4, 23 KO’s) by a 4th round TKO at Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California, USA.

Thurman showed in this fight that he’ll be a problem for anyone at welterweight, and he’d also be more than a handful at 154 because of his power. Thurman is going to have to fight in both divisions unfortunately in order to get the best fights, because he’s probably not going to get a lot interest from the top fighters in mixing it up with him.

Guerrero defeats Berto; Thurman stops Quintana

Image: Guerrero defeats Berto; Thurman stops QuintanaBy Jim Dower: In a foul plagued war WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) successfully defending his title by beating former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California, USA.

The final judges’ scores were 116-110, 116-110, and 116-110, all for Guerrero. Berto was knocked down twice in the fight. He was knocked down in the 1st round after Guerrero grabbed him around the back of the head with his right hand and held and hit him with four big shots that knocked him down. It’s unclear why the referee didn’t waive off the knockdown because it was a clear case of holding and hitting by Guerrero.

Keith Thurman about his fight with Quintana: Don’t blink

Image: Keith Thurman about his fight with Quintana: Don't blinkBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated junior middleweight prospect Keith Thurman (18-0, 17 KO’s) sees himself as a future world champion in both the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions. Thurman takes that first step in realizing his dreams on Saturday night against contender Carlos Quintana (29-3, 23 KO’s) at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California.

Thurman is one of those types of fighters that has supreme confidence in his ability, and perhaps too much confidence given the way he’s looked. Despite never having faced any 1st tier opponents until now, Thurman has already called out the big names in the sport such as Floyd Mayweather and Tim Bradley.
