Five days before the great showdown between WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and no. 1 contender Juan Carlos Gomez it was team Gomez who clearly won the “first round” at today’s press conference in Stuttgart. While Vitali kept repeating that he will give Gomez a lesson “which won’t last very long” his manager Bernd Bönte had to admit that team Klitschko actually refused the referee and one judge the WBC had planned to appoint for the fight. Apparently, the champion and his team are getting nervous with fight day approaching.

Vitali Being Forced To Fight Two Mandatorys In a Row

vitali42447By Eric Thomas: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (36-2, 35 KOs) has filed a complaint against the WBC for making him fight two consecutive mandatory fights for his heavyweight title. Normally, a fighter only is expected to fight one per year, but Vitali, 37, who is fighting his WBC mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Gomez on March 21st, will be looking at fighting former heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev, currently number #6 in the WBC, only four months later on. Instead of doing that, Vitali has filed a complaint to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to try and get the WBC order reversed.

Maskaev to Fight Winner of Klitschko/Gomez

If Maskaev doesn’t beat Boruff, he is jeopardizing and will lose his mandatory status as per the WBC order dated December 25, 2008.

Vitali-Gomez Reach Agreement; Cruz-Thomas, Berto-Collazo – News

vitali42446World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman announced today that WBC heavyweight world champion Vitali Klitschko of Ukraine and official challenger Juan Carlos Gomez of Cuba/Germany have reached an agreement and signed for their mandatory fight. The purse offer, which was scheduled for tomorrow, has been cancelled.

Shelly Finkel, representing Klitschko, and Ahmet Oner, representing Gomez, told President Sulaiman about the agreement.

gomez3135By Matt Stein: It seems as if World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (36-2, 35 KOs) is going to either have to fight Juan Carlos Gomez (44-1, 35 KOs), his number #1 mandatory challenger, or vacate the title in order to fight David Haye. Gomez, 35, is determined to fight Vitali next, based on news reports around the boxing world. Gomez, apparently, isn’t interested in stepping aside, and waiting for Haye to face Vitali first, and wants his bout to be next. Gomez had this to say to Haye pertaining to Vitali: “David, I got one advice for you – Keep your hands off Vitali. He’s mine.”
