Macklin vs. Nelson added to Rigondeaux-Agbeko card on December 7th

macklin45By Scott Gilfoid: The struggling middleweight Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) will try to turn his sinking career around on December 7th against junior middleweight Willie Nelson (21-1-1, 12 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout on the undercard of the HBO televised Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Joseph Agbeko card at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Also on the card will be James Kirkland vs. Glen Tapia.

This card is going to have some stiff competition from a Golden Boy Promoted card on the same night on Showtime head-lined by Paulie Malignaggi vs. Zab Judah. That card has Austin Trout vs. Erislanady Lara and Sakio Bika vs. Anthony Dirrell. That seems like a better fight card than the Rigondeaux-Agbeko one, but that’s just my view. I’m sure a lot of fans would prefer to see Rigondeaux face Agbeko than Malignaggi vs. Judah.

Rigondeaux to fight Agbeko on December 7th

rigondeaux111`By Chris Williams: WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) will be facing 33-year-old former two-time IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko (29-4, 22 KO’s) on December 7th in Atlantic City, New Jersey, according to Boxrec and the Sweet Science.

While this may not the biggest fight out there for Rigondeaux, it’s a lot better than Nonito Donaire’s upcoming match-up against 37-year-old Vic Darchinyan on November 9th.

Rigondeaux wanted to fight Donaire again to prove that his one-sided 12 round unanimous decision win over him last April wasn’t a fluke, but instead Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum decided to match him against Darchinyan, who has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights.

Rigondeaux’s manager targeting Frampton, Mares, Darchinyan, Agbeko, more!

rigondeaux655By Chris Williams: With Bob Arum of Top Rank choosing to steer his fighter Nonito Donaire towards a rematch against Vic Darchinyan, Gary Hyde, the manager for WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s), is targeting the following super bantamweights for Rigondeaux to fight next according to Fightnews: Carl Frampton, Abner Mares, Joseph Agbeko, Akifumi Shimodo, and Vic Darchinyan.

Arum told Dan Rafael yesterday that HBO isn’t interested in televising Rigondeaux’s bout. However, they are interested in televising Donaire’s next fight against Darchinyan in November. Why is HBO televising Donaire’s fight and not Rigondeaux’s fight? HBO has things backwards. It’s supposed to be the winner that has his fights televised, not the loser.

Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko to resurrect boxing in Ghana

Joseph AgbekoBy Oral Ofori: On March 22, 2013, Joseph Agbeko dethroned Colombian born Luis Melendez in a 12 round unanimous decision fight at the Accra sports stadium in Ghana to become the new International Boxing Organization Bantamweight Champion of the world. I had the opportunity of chatting with Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Agbeko a few weeks after the Ghanaian fighter became a champion.

Sometime in April of 2013, I called Agbeko to talk about his comeback fight that saw him enter the ring for the first time in over a year. The fight was also his first fight in Ghana in over 5 years. Agbeko told me he was really happy to have defeated Melendez after being inactive for about 15 months and he looked forward to getting busy this year by taking on more big name.

Image: Mares: I'm a perfectionist and I'm going to the body of AgbekoBy Allen Fox: IBF bantamweight champion Abner Mares (22-0, 13 KO’s) feels that he’s got it under control in terms of his terrible habit of tagging his opponents low left and right in his fights, and he’s not going to stop throwing to the body even if it means he’ll likely lose points this Saturday night against Joseph Agbeko (28-3, 22 KO’s) in their rematch at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
