By Dan Ambrose: WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (56-8, 47 KOs) will be defending his title on September 20th in what shapes up to be a title milking fight against 35-year-old former four division world champion Jorge Arce (64-7-2, 49 KOs) in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.
Arce isn’t ranked in the top 15 at featherweight, and he’s clearly way too small to be fighting in this division. Arce want’s to try and win a 5th division world title, but he’s picking the wrong guy to be trying to accomplish that goal against.
By Dan Ambrose: It looks like you can forget about a fight between former three division world champion Adrien Broner (28-2, 22 KO’s) and light welterweight slugger/contender Lucas Matthysse (35-3, 33 KOs) for September 6th. Showtime vice president Stephen Espinosa says that the two fighters will be competing on the same card on September 6th, but not against each other.

By Dan Ambrose: WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KO’s) will be defending his title this Saturday night, May 24th, against little known Clive Atwell (12-0-1, 7 KO’s) at the Convention Center in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. Gonzalez, 32, had been hoping to face Abner Mares in a rematch months ago, but Mares suffered a rib injury while training. Atwell, #12 WBC, is more of a stay busy fight than anything. He’s not someone who will give Gonzalez any real challenge because Atwell lack the speed, power, skills and experience to do much in this fight.
By Dan Ambrose: Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14 KO’s) has suffered a rib injury during training, and he won’t be able to make the February 15th rematch against WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KO’s). There’s still no date for when the fight can be rescheduled, and it might be a while before the 28-year-old Mares recovers from the injury.
By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten featherweight contender, #2 WBO, #3 WBA, #4 WBC, #8 IBF, Gary Russell Jr. (23-0, 13 KO’s) says he’s ready to step it up and face WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KO’s) in his next fight if the 31-year-old Gonzalez will accept his challenge.
By Chris Williams: Newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Garcia (55-8, 47 KO’s) revitalized his career last Saturday night with a spectacular 1st round knockout win over Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14 KO’s) at the StubHub Center, in Carson, California, USA. Gonzalez is now talking about wanting to fight one of the following fighters according to Fightnews.com: Mikey Garcia, Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux for his next fight.

Some notable light weights, but in general very few people talk about featherweights. In my opinion, that’s where the real magic happens. For example, one of the best technicians in Nonito Donaire losses to an even better technician in Rigondeux. Undoubtably in the top 5 lists of technicians in boxing today, fighting one another.
