Rigondeaux vs. Dickens fight is off

rigondeauxBy Scott Gilfoid: This Saturday’s scheduled fight between Guillermo Rigondeaux and Jazz Dickens is reportedly off due to Rigondeaux having visa problems that will get in the way of him fighting. Let’s be real about this. Boxing fans aren’t likely going to miss much with the Rigondeaux-Dickens fight being cancelled. It was a mismatch of epic proportions, as Dickens is a 2nd tier fighter that was trounced by Kid Galahad in the past. Rigondeaux would likely clown Galahad. The difference in talent between Rigondeaux and Dickens was incredible. Dickens is technically a professional fighter, but he was worlds behind Rigondeaux in terms of talent. Rigondeaux would have had to literally carry a fighter like Dickens to make it an interesting fight in my view. I think it would be an embarrassing fight to watch.

The good news is the March 12th card, headlined by WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan vs. Derry Mathews, is still taking place at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. It’s a decent little fight. I mean, it’s Flanagan vs. Felix Verdejo or anything, but it’s a decent entertainment.

It’s kind disturbing that Flanagan has already beaten Mathews in the past, but rematches are the norm in the sport nowadays. I would much prefer to see Flanagan fight some new blood rather than having Mathews trotted out again for another fight against him, but what can you do?

Guillermo Rigondeaux will not fight Dickens on the March 12 card in Liverpool

STATEMENT: GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX

Following various and conflicting reports as to the situation regarding Guillermo Rigondeaux, Queensberry Promotions (“QP”) would like to state the facts as to why, Rigondeaux will not be arriving in the UK to take part in his contracted fight against British Champion, Jazza Dickens at the Echo Arena, Liverpool as chief support to the WBO World title fight between Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews this Saturday (12th March).

Rigondeaux with visa problems, Dickens fight in jeopardy

The 35-year-old Rigondeaux is supposed to face British fighter James “Jazza” Dickens (21-1, 6 KOs) on Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. There had been all kinds of interest in that fight from fans, and now it’s unknown if the clash will take place or not.

Rigondeaux-Dickens is scheduled for the undercard of the lightweight title fight between WBO champion Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews.

Warren statement on Guillermo Rigondeaux

Rigondeaux to Frampton: Are you a coward?

rigondeaux23By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (16-0, 10 KOs) wants to know whether newly crowned WBA super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (22-0, 14 KOs) will face him or not.

Frampton recently captured the WBA title last Saturday night in beating WBA champ Scott Quigg by a 12 round split decision at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK. Frampton, 28, now has until June 27 to defend the WBA 122lb title against mandatory challenger Rigondeaux. What Rigondeaux wants to know is whether Frampton will take the fight or not.

Frampton said after his win over Quigg that he and his team would meet and decide their next move. Frampton is considering moving up to featherweight to face WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz. Frampton could also choose to vacate his WBA title in order to avoid the fight with the 35-year-old Rigondeaux and hold onto his IBF 122lb title.

WBA orders Carl Frampton to face Guillermo Rigondeaux next

frampton4By Scott Gilfoid: Well, if IBF/WBA super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (22-0, 14 KOs) wants to hold onto his WBA strap that he just won off of Scott Quigg last Saturday night, then Frampton will need to defend his WBA title against his mandatory challenger unbeaten Guillermo Rigondeaux (16-0, 10 KOs) next.

The World Boxing Association says Frampton must face Rigondeaux next, according to ESPN. Frampton can also vacate the WBA title or wait for the organization to strip it from him if he fails to take the fight with the Cuban or give it up on his own.

Frampton hasn’t said what he’ll do with his WBA title. He says he wants to meet with his team and make a decision which direction to go in for his next fight. Frampton did say he was interested in moving up to featherweight possibly to face WBA champion Leo Santa Cruz.

Time to face the ‘Real Jackal’

rigondeaux5By Gav Duthie: Cuban artist Guillermo Rigondeaux 16-0 (10) must realize that time is not on his side as he approaches a pivotal point in his career. Undoubtedly one of boxing biggest talents there is a concern that Rigo will not be allowed to fulfil that potential. Roc Nation is the latest in a long list of promoters who have managed Rigo, but at 35 years old will he ever get his career defining fight.

His treatment is an embarrassment to the sport. Last year the Super Bantamweight division was mouth watering with Leo Santa Cruz WBC, Guillermo Rigondeaux WBA Super and WBO, Scott Quigg WBA regular and Carl Frampton IBF all in contention for big unification fights. Now the champions are Hugo Ruiz WBC, Carl Frampton WBA and IBF and Nonito Donaire WBO.

Rigo doesn’t even have a belt despite never losing in the ring. It is now a much poorer list of champions as Santa Cruz ran up to 126, Donaire ran back down and Ruiz having the WBC is just as shambolic as was Julio Ceja before him.

Rigondeaux still wants Frampton and Quigg

Pound-for-pound megastar Guillermo Rigondeaux took to Twitter over the weekend to vent his disgust at Carl Frampton’s anti-climax victory over super-bantamweight rival Scott Quigg.

The hard-hitting Cuban was far from impressed at the pair’s cagey unification fight and sent out a series of tweets reiterating his desire to take on Frampton once he has beaten Merseyside hero Jazza Dickens, who he takes on at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Saturday 12th March, exclusively live on BoxNation.

Is it too late for Chacal Rigondeaux?

1-RigondeauxWorkout_HoganphotosBy Gerardo Granados: Last Saturday night on February 27 at the Manchester Arena, Lancashire, UK, Carl Frampton fully dominated Scott Quigg to unify the WBA – IBF super bantamweight belts. According to reporters present at the Manchester Arena the atmosphere was awesome, but the main event disappointed due the lack of effort from Quigg during the first 7 rounds.

As the readers already must know, Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux is scheduled to fight against James Dickens on March 12 at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, UK as part of the undercard for the main even headed by WBO lightweight Terry Flanagan vs challenger Derry Mathews.

Hearn says Frampton-Quigg could have rematch rather than face Rigondeaux

hearn53By Scott Gilfoid: Just as I thought; Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn, who promotes WBA 122lb champion Scott Quigg (31-0-2, 23 KOs), is talking about there being a potential rematch with IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs) for Quigg’s next fight after Saturday’s clash with Frampton at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Hearn says that a rematch with Frampton is possible. He also says a fight against former WBA/WBO 122lb champion Guillermo Rigondeaux or a unification fight against WBO champion Nonito Donaire is possible. If Quigg faces Frampton in an immediate rematch, then it means he’ll either be stripped of the WBA title or he’ll vacate the title. The World Boxing Association has already ordered that the winner of the Frampton-Quigg fight must defend the WBA title against Rigondeaux. What this means we could see the Frampton vs. Quigg rematch without the WBA title being up for grabs for the fight. The IBF strap would still be there though, so that would help validate the contest.

However, you would have to assume that Hearn will look for the rematch against Frampton rather than letting Quigg tangle with the wily Rigondeaux.
