Hearn says Frampton-Quigg could have rematch rather than face Rigondeaux

hearn53By Scott Gilfoid: Just as I thought; Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn, who promotes WBA 122lb champion Scott Quigg (31-0-2, 23 KOs), is talking about there being a potential rematch with IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs) for Quigg’s next fight after Saturday’s clash with Frampton at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Hearn says that a rematch with Frampton is possible. He also says a fight against former WBA/WBO 122lb champion Guillermo Rigondeaux or a unification fight against WBO champion Nonito Donaire is possible. If Quigg faces Frampton in an immediate rematch, then it means he’ll either be stripped of the WBA title or he’ll vacate the title. The World Boxing Association has already ordered that the winner of the Frampton-Quigg fight must defend the WBA title against Rigondeaux. What this means we could see the Frampton vs. Quigg rematch without the WBA title being up for grabs for the fight. The IBF strap would still be there though, so that would help validate the contest.

However, you would have to assume that Hearn will look for the rematch against Frampton rather than letting Quigg tangle with the wily Rigondeaux.

“I think Frampton is the slight favorite in the fight,” Hearn said to Figththype. “I’m just so confident in Quigg. He’s hitting harder than ever. He’s in a great place. I just fancy Scott Quigg big time in this fight. I can’t wait. I think Frampton will be surprised at how good and how clever Quigg is. We know he punches hard, but he’s got plenty more in his arsenal than that,” said Hearn.

Unfortunately for Hearn, I don’t see Quigg winning this fight on Saturday. I think Frampton is just way too good for the likes of Quigg, who kind of fights in only one gear at all times. Quigg is just a slugger in my view, and when he faces guys that are able to neutralize his offense, he has no ability to shift into 2nd and 3rd gear to come up with different strategies. In other words, Quigg is one-dimensional. If his slugging doesn’t work against Frampton on Saturday night, then it’s going to be a sad night for Hearn. I mean, Quigg can go to the cupboards looking for a backup plan, but I see it being bare. There won’t be a backup plan.

Quigg will just be left flailing with his shots in a wild manner like we saw with Kevin Mitchell in his fight against WBC lightweight champion Jorge Linares in 2015. Mitchell didn’t have the ability to shift into 2nd gear because he only had one gear. I see the same thing happening with Quigg, who I think is a poor man’s version of Kevin Mitchell.

When asked if he would match Quigg against Rigondeaux next, Hearn said “Maybe it’s the biggest fight out there. It might be a rematch with Frampton. It might be Rigondeaux. It might be Donaire. First things first; we’ve got to take care of business on Saturday,” said Hearn.

If Quigg wins the fight, then Hearn will jump at the chance of putting together a rematch against Frampton.
